Men wearing rings other than wedding band

What do you think of men wearing rings other than a wedding band? DH wears a ring on his right hand ring finger. It’s something he was given when he emigrated from his home european country at 16 and has an emblem of that country. It’s not a family signet ring, it’s just a nod to his origins.

My friends and work colleagues thought DH was super posh and it was a family crest. This is because he has no hint of a foreign accent, and sounds quite posh. He hates the idea that people think he is snotty and wearing it like a signet ring!

Ooh just googled it. Very interesting, never knew that was a thing!

goose1964 · 28/05/2021 23:58

I automatically think of self made middle aged man. Probably something like a builder who made millions by building as many rabbit hutches as he possibly could in housing estates by calling them executive homes.

It's a thing. A good thing I think.

LittleBearPad · 29/05/2021 00:02

@Gurkangurke

I work a full time job and still do 95% of all domestic tasks and probably 70% of non feeding childcare, 95% of preschool runs. I think I deserve to wear the ring!
Because of breastfeeding Confused??
BigHeadBertha · 29/05/2021 00:13

I think everyone should wear whatever the heck they want to wear.

excelledyourself · 29/05/2021 01:54

Pinky rings on men remind me of Robin Thicke and that's never a good thing.

But I quite like a plainish ring on the right hand ring finger. Not yellow gold though, and not on the middle finger.

Don't know why, but that's my personal thoughts.

SnoopsCaliforniaRoll · 29/05/2021 02:04

@Gurkangurke

Re joint sacrifices, I suppose it's lots of intangible things and domestic tasks but the reason cited by many women for stopping breastfeeding is a non supportive partner. I guess I am just the polar opposite of that and proud of it. It is a fair point though. I certainly haven't had to do much feeding!
Ah I understand. So it's a ring rather than the giant shiny medal you are owed for being a decent parent and partner. Makes sense, yeah.

my husband is an engineer and wears his iron ring.

i believe it's to be returned up his death...
i wear my nursing school ring on my right hand little finger, many of my nursing colleagues wear theirs as well.

Who do we return them to? I'm keeping DH's.
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 29/05/2021 02:16

I've always dated bikers and they all wear loads of heavy rings.

fallfallfall · 29/05/2021 02:31

not sure @MrsTerryPratchett, i've heard it mentioned but not paid much attention. i presume 20+ years before i need to worry about this.

possibly when notification is received by the association of engineers that a member passed away they follow up with the necessary details.
a few years ago his original one broke, he could not order a new one without returning the broken one it first.

thedevilinablackdress · 29/05/2021 09:30

I'm quite baffled by how rigid some people are in their views of what men "should wear". It seems the patriarchal view of men must be men, is alive and well.
Let them have a bit of fun and creativity!

MsBarbaryBriefly · 29/05/2021 12:21

@MaMelon

Not my cup of tea - anything more than a plain wedding band and a watch on a man is a bit tacky imo.
I don't even like wedding rings. My husband has never had one. I do but I don't wear it any more often than I wear other rings on the ring finger of my left hand.

Earings are ok on young men but anything else- No.

OrangePowder · 29/05/2021 12:23

When I was young men wearing signet rings was really quite a thing. Those men were about as far away from posh as it's possible to be Grin

It's nothing to do with what "men should wear" and entirely my personal preferences.

I don't like sportswear either. I'm not in the market for dating but I wouldn't be remotely interested in any man who wore tracksuits/ hoodies/ trainers unless he was actually participating in sport.

Oh I do love a nice bit of MN snobbery.
Mamamamasaurus · 29/05/2021 12:49

@Serpenta

although if I was with Jason Momoa I'd be delighted by all his jewellery Grin

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/05/2021 19:23

So far we've got;
The breast milk ring,
The placenta key ring,
The umbilical cord dog lead,
I'll add, to balance things a little,
the scrotum purse - although it can be a bit tricky getting the 5p pieces out from the folds.

Sgtmajormummy · 29/05/2021 19:39

^^ Grin
DH wears his parents’ wedding rings melted into one Bulgari-style band on his right ring finger. A touching tribute.
I have a four-band Cartier style on mine, with our names and the DCs’ engraved inside.
We’re not tattoo fans but we wear those rings permanently.

Mysterian · 29/05/2021 19:48

How about a large silver skull ring? Shows the person is evil and will throw the hero in their dungeon at some point, going "bwah ha ha!".

grapewine · 29/05/2021 20:00

@Gurkangurke

I wear a ring containing my wife's breast milk below my wedding ring.
Why though? That's beyond random.
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/05/2021 20:36

My DS is training to be a Civil Engineer and all he's had so far is a re-useable cup with I.C.E (Institute of Civil Engineers) on it .

He'd sooner eat his spleen than adorn himself with jewelery but I need to look out for one .

DH wears a gold wedding ring and a black thumb ring . I have no words .

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/05/2021 20:40

Earings are ok on young men but anything else- No

I'm an old fogey , I quite like one earring but a tiny stud or a hoop (like David Essex in his heyday)
Not the walloping big 2ct stud ( usually CZ ) in both lobes though .

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/05/2021 20:40

DH wears a gold wedding ring and a black thumb ring

I'm assuming he is good in bed Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 29/05/2021 21:10

Ooh actually Mrs I did read that a black ring is to signify being a-sexual .

I don't think DH read this , he just likes the look of it !

But I suppose its like the right ear/left ear gay/straight ......I think it has been lost over time .
