What to wear instead of a cardigan??

Is there an alternative to the cardi to keep warm and throw over spring/summer outfits? Don't want to look hopelessly dated. Looking forward to summer and wearing nice dresses and tops but very conscious that this is England and the weather is definitely not tropical, what do you wear instead of a cardigan? I have a nice leather jacket but that's too heavy wear all the time and not as comfy. Or is it a matter of finding the right style cardigan?

Ideas very welcome!

I was going to say leather jacket. You could probably find a lighter one?
Or denim jacket?

tinseloatcake · 23/05/2021 07:14

I wear blazers increasingly. I just bought a pink cord one to try but my face is grey jersey

Chunky ribbed or cable cotton cardigans seem to be popular this year.
I also like a fine Merino wool cardigan at the moment.
Short fitted denim jacket occasionally too if it works with what I'm wearing.
When it's 'warmer' I'll switch to linen or denim shirt/jacket type things.

Thanks all. It just feels odd to sit in a restaurant or somebody's house with a jacket on the whole time because let's face it, it's rarely warm enough to sit in a sleeveless top at night even indoors. Or perhaps it's just me who feels it's odd to wear a jacket indoors? Grin

Blazer

FirmlyRooted · 23/05/2021 08:54

For example, I've got this dress which is great, flattering and comfortable. Maybe a slightly chunkier knit cardigan in cream would work. Or some kind of jersey jacket type thing

I'm just sticking with cardigans tbh. I wouldn't be comfortable in a denim or leather jacket. A comfortable blazer might be ok but it's a bit weird wearing it inside the whole time.

I do like a coatigan and have a couple which are super versatile and comfortable. That probably makes me very un-chic but I like the way they look

MaryTheMiddle · 23/05/2021 09:09

I think cardis are fairly in this year as it goes. Especially cropped.

If you don't like them though and they feel dated, options are jacket, wearing longer sleeves or maybe another layer under your dress, assuming you can get away without it showing. There was a poster on here who said she wore a thermal, sleeveless vest under all her summer dresses, because...UK weather Hmm

Nitgel · 23/05/2021 09:12

Linen shirt ?

jannyapple · 23/05/2021 09:15

I love my pale grey MS coatigan!
It's so soft and goes in the washing machine too , I think after this totally crap interesting year we have had we are all used to needing more comfort but still need to be warm
Or ... wear whatever the hell you want!

Jenjenn · 23/05/2021 09:58

Same dilemma here OP. I found I like the look of fitted crop sweatshirt over a dress or a crop wrap cardi. I haven't got a notion about fashion though Grin

SnowdaySewday · 23/05/2021 10:08

Layer underneath (silk vest) so the temperature has to drop lower before you need an extra top layer?

Gingefringe · 23/05/2021 10:15

I bought this from white stuff recently - its' a quilted sweatshirt fabric and not too bulky to wear inside. Looks great with jeans and a plain tee. Its out of stock on the website but I got mine from Next online.

Oly4 · 23/05/2021 10:17

Cardigans are fine! Just pick a non mumsy style

user1497787065 · 23/05/2021 10:31

Just where the dress when it is warm enough not to need another layer over the top?

HeartZone · 23/05/2021 10:34

Wrap or light poncho

Twilightstarbright · 23/05/2021 11:11

Chunky cardigan, ASOS has lots.

Not the fine knit ones that button all the way up!

Alternista · 23/05/2021 11:26

With that dress I’d either do a leather/denim jacket over the top, or a long sleeved navy vest underneath I think.

Readyorknot · 23/05/2021 11:55

I think leather jackets are a bit dated atm (don't worry they seem to make a come back every five years!) But fitted hip length denim jacket or oversized blazers seem to be everywhere.

Readyorknot · 23/05/2021 11:56

Or the chunky cardigan with buttons starting from chest & going down
