What to wear instead of a cardigan??

Is there an alternative to the cardi to keep warm and throw over spring/summer outfits? Don't want to look hopelessly dated. Looking forward to summer and wearing nice dresses and tops but very conscious that this is England and the weather is definitely not tropical, what do you wear instead of a cardigan? I have a nice leather jacket but that's too heavy wear all the time and not as comfy. Or is it a matter of finding the right style cardigan?

Ideas very welcome!

I have the fine knit ones, I have a yellow, mustard, black, white, animal print, grey animal print, and pink I never wear them,there is no warm in them really, but every time I do a clothing sort out, back they go in my wardrobe just in case. One or two come from zara so my thinking is are they old fashion

Squiz81 · 23/05/2021 16:59

I’m not giving up on cardigans. Boxy cropped ones will look good with a dress
I’ve attached a photo of an H&M one (it always opens in the app so I can’t link)

Lightweight cropped denim jacket is timeless and good for "dressing down" pretty or delicate summer dresses.

headintheproverbial · 23/05/2021 18:09

Lightweight leather jacket or a denim jacket is a good plan.

goose1964 · 23/05/2021 19:11

Denim jacket or blazer

TableNiner · 23/05/2021 19:17

You would need to peel my cardigans from my cold, dead hands. But perhaps a slightly oversized jersey blazer or a bomber jacket.

Chunky cardigans are definitely in but don’t seem that summery and are, er, chunkier, when you are carrying around.

Onlinedilema · 23/05/2021 19:26

Jackets are not as comfortable as a cardigan.
I just go with a cardigan. Although currently still wearing a big winter coat and long sleeved dresses or tops.

dancealittleclosertome · 23/05/2021 22:02

A kimono jacket? This, for example:

But there are lots in lots of different budgets if you Google.

AnaViaSalamanca · 23/05/2021 22:06

Leather jackets are quite dated. Cropped chunky cardigans are actually quite “in” or a new denim jacket (looser). Or you can use an oversized shirt to tie or blazer

KizzyKat91 · 23/05/2021 23:08

Boyfriend blazer or denim jacket. I bought 2 blazers and a white denim jacket from m&s a few weeks ago and have worn one of them every day since! The blazers are loose and lightweight and I actually find them more comfortable than my cardigans. The denim jacket is stretchy so also comfortable.

Zenithbear · 23/05/2021 23:19

I hate cardigans.
I wear the following:
long sleeve t-shirts and layer them if cold,
Shirts open over t-shirt etc
Denim jacket in both black and blue
Really thin jumpers
Biker jacket in a soft fabric in both black and white

Emmelina · 23/05/2021 23:23

@Gingefringe

I bought this from white stuff recently - its' a quilted sweatshirt fabric and not too bulky to wear inside. Looks great with jeans and a plain tee. Its out of stock on the website but I got mine from Next online.
Oh my! I’ve been looking for something in that cut for ages! Thank you!
RacheyCat · 24/05/2021 12:43

Indian-style duster coats, kimono-type things, or, a button-through dress worn open over whatever I'm wearing. This works well when you accidentally got carried away and bought one of those prairie dresses. If it buttons up, unbutton it. It's a jacket!

bendmeoverbackwards · 24/05/2021 22:54

@jannyapple

I love my pale grey MS coatigan! It's so soft and goes in the washing machine too , I think after this totally crap interesting year we have had we are all used to needing more comfort but still need to be warm Or ... wear whatever the hell you want!
Do you have a link to this pls @jannyapple?
katieg03 · 24/05/2021 23:14

A shacket? River island have nice ones (I have a pale grey) but you probably get them everywhere. Also you could get biker style jackets in suede material in Primark, new look, river island etc. I'd also use a denim or leather jacket.

Card is aren’t dated OP. Unless you’re thinking waterfall card is. Shops are full of them.

I’ve just bought this and it looks good done up (over a tshirt to look more trendy) and looks good open too.

But if they aren’t you’re thing, denim jacket or a lightweight blazer?

I need to proof read my posts 😁

@FirmlyRooted

Thanks all. It just feels odd to sit in a restaurant or somebody's house with a jacket on the whole time because let's face it, it's rarely warm enough to sit in a sleeveless top at night even indoors. Or perhaps it's just me who feels it's odd to wear a jacket indoors? Grin
No, I agree with you. If you had a denim jacket on at my place I'd think you were giving the impression you weren't staying for more than a few minutes.
thedevilinablackdress · 25/05/2021 19:34

Bit of a tangent, but this reminds me of my late uncle, who NEVER took his jacket of in anyone's house, always stood by your fireplace (or where he thought one should be) hopping from foot to foot until he could leave.
Loved entertaining you at his house, hated visiting people.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 25/05/2021 19:55

I love a kimono over camisoles/vest tops.

RedHotChiliChips · 25/05/2021 20:59

The Chloe jacket! I have two and they go with nearly anything and look much better than a cardigan. The jacket is unlined but very well made and holds it shape well and worth the cost.

Stumpedasatree · 25/05/2021 22:54

@SallyCinnabon where is that cardigan from please? I like it.

Yes I'd like to know this too please!

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 25/05/2021 23:20

@Readyorknot

I think leather jackets are a bit dated atm (don't worry they seem to make a come back every five years!) But fitted hip length denim jacket or oversized blazers seem to be everywhere.
I agree, just given both of mine to the charity shop they feel passé now.
