Frock crisis - help!

56 replies

Florabritannica · 18/05/2021 21:59

I have been invited to Glyndebourne - yay! - but have no idea what to wear - boo! I am early 50s, size 16, comedy bust, 5 foot 4. As against this, I’m happy to pay what it takes to find a frock that I don’t feel like the Incredible Hulk in. Please help me!

Have you looked as Phase Eight, lots of different designs. I'm exactly the same as you, I liked this.

or Ghost

whatabelter · 19/05/2021 08:53

Try Winser

Hoppinggreen · 19/05/2021 08:55

Try Boden (yes I know) another lady on here got a lovely maxi dress for tea at The Ritz and they have quite a few nice dresses at the moment. Watch the boobage though, some Boden dresses don’t have enough stretch in that area

Florabritannica · 19/05/2021 09:56

Lots of great suggestions - thank you!

Needle and thread have some fancy ones - lots of polyester though

Hoppinggreen · 19/05/2021 10:01

@Squiz81

There’s also this on Anthropologie if you like a bold print? www.anthropologie.com/en-gb/shop/bhanuni-by-jyoti-ronika-maxi-dress? category=dresses&color=095&type=REGULAR&quantity=1

I have no boobs, so I have really no clue how to accommodate them. Are wrap style dresses better?

Beautiful dress but probably not great for larger boobs. That shape can make you look pg if you have big boobs
mrssmiling · 19/05/2021 10:02

Lots of great suggestions already - wondered about this dress.

Various fabric designs and colours in a silk mix - very comfortable (I have a tea dress) and easy to wear.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 19/05/2021 10:04

Ghost dresses are beautiful and there's quite a few on sale at John Lewis.

mrssmiling · 19/05/2021 10:08

Linked wrong dress...although that might work. Not sure about slit. This is the one I thought might be more Glyndebourne...also available in more colours.

I’d second the suggestion of Bombshell dresses. They are structured but extremely comfortable and easy to wear.

They are especially good if you have great shoulders to go with your curvy boobs. Sadly I don’t so I can’t wear their off the shoulder style, only the Confident style.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 19/05/2021 10:28

How lucky you are! Just thought it worth adding as it’s not explicitly been said, you don’t have to wear long, but most people do. If you wear short you will definitely want something pretty eveningy- men are in black tie - so do think some of the suggestions here while lovely are a bit more daytime.

But as usual the key thing is to wear something that makes you happy! Have a great time!

Florabritannica · 19/05/2021 13:23

@WorkingItOutAsIGo Yes I was thinking long, and couldn’t find any long dresses on the Ghost website which was a shame as there are some lovely ones.
@mrssmiling you have found my frock! Exactly what I had in my head, floaty-English-countryside, wearable more than once, available in lots of colours, brand I’ve never heard of - perfect!

Squiz81 · 19/05/2021 15:32

Yay! What colour are you going to pick?

Florabritannica · 19/05/2021 16:27

All of them?

@mrssmiling that is gorgeous. I have nowhere to go but I want one...

soyabean · 19/05/2021 19:02

Coral thistle is calling me

mrssmiling · 19/05/2021 19:28

@Florabrittanica
So very glad you like that dress!
@soyabean
Will you answer? 😁 Might Coral thistle in a shirt or tea dress get more use? When we get some decent weather!

This is lovely
Great for big breasted ladies and a very glam colour
Is there a dress length restriction?ie not knee or midi length sorry o don’t know If not I think this ticks a lot of boxes

Cleverpolly3 · 19/05/2021 20:05

Lots of maxi dresses are shown on women talker than average height so they can swamp a more petite frame

Also the fabric makes a huge difference in terms of stretch across larger chests

bpirockin · 01/06/2021 14:26

Oh wow, I love the Gabrielle Parker dress, and will be keeping an eye on Bombshell, which I've never heard of before. So many lovely ideas. I'm glad you found one you're happy with OP.
