Am 59.

Have longish hair. Recently with layer at front. Feel like it’s doing nothing for me, most days.

Any ideas for a change?

@Hairobsessed123... nice! At that length I could probably wash it each morning. I hate “second day” hair.

Found a couple of fringes but it’s so hard to imagine in an older person because the models are YOUNG!
@JinglingHellsBells... a friend who’s known me since I was 16 said it looks dark at the moment. I was blonder when younger and then did very light blonde highlights for years. She suggested a soft fringe, not to cover the wrinkles/long forehead just because she remembers me years ago with a fringe and said it suited me. My whole face shape’s changed a bit since then though! 😂

Then, there’s people who just say “have a bob, I liked you with a bob” 🤷🏻‍♀️

And... I’m a bit embarrassed that I’m giving so much thought to something so trivial, what with everything that’s going on in the world.
Your face looks young enough to wear long hair. :)
BUT I just think very long hair is a 'nothing' hairstyle. Friend of my DD is mid 30s and has had about 9 inches cut off her hair - was your length- as she thought it looked a bit childish and not professional for work.
That's just one take on it. :)

I'd go for a choppy-ish long bob that reaches your shoulders or slightly longer, and a soft fringe. Colour- maybe some warmth with some light honey shades might work well, woven through? The colour in the photo makes you look slightly washed out but it's hard to tell.

JinglingHellsBells · 18/05/2021 17:07

Fringes- drag some of your hair up onto the top of your head then flip it forward and pin the ends over your forehead- you will see what a fringe looks like!

Love it long

Londontown12 · 18/05/2021 17:39

@HeraInTheHereAndNow it would be nice because it’s still a nice length so u cud tie it back or where it down and I deffo love the curtain bangs at the moment u cud style them or just sweep them away so versatile x

The image I sent on page 1 shows a person of your age with a fringe? Did you not see it?

HeraInTheHereAndNow · 18/05/2021 18:43

@Peakypolly... yes, of course 😊

What about this style.. thinking more the fringe than the colour.. more of a sweeping fringe x

I'd lose about 5 inches from the length and get a fringe !

LunaNorth · 18/05/2021 20:14

I love this

Looks great as it is.

No rules about hair length and age anymore and never should have been in my book.

If you"re 50, how long is your hair? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/3822171-If-youre-50-how-long-is-your-hair

Charleymouse · 18/05/2021 20:20

Just for the record I pasted the last link and then panicked in case you weren't over 50 until I checked on the first post.

Soggybiscuits17 · 18/05/2021 20:26

You have gorgeous hair - what a great colour! I would just do a slight trim and add a wispy fringe! 😍

HeraInTheHereAndNow · 19/05/2021 08:17

@Peachee... that’s too “young” for me and sadly, my hair is poker straight so, it’d be “work” to get it to bend to one side. Right now, I don’t even dry it. It gets washed every other day and left. The “kink” in it in the original post photo is due to it being in an elastic band in a messy bun.

@LunaNorth... I like that. Totally different for me but yes, I do like it. Not sure I could tie it up for work, though.

@Charleymouse... that’s Ok. Am well over that milestone!

@Charleymouse... the link was interesting. So many people saying long hair on any age. My mum was always telling me to get it cut short again and the more she said it, of course I did the opposite. She died in 2019, and she’d be aghast at the length it’s gotten to in Covid lockdown.

Also, I have a quite conservative hairdresser who says (when I go with photos of what I’d like) “but, it’s in good condition and lots of people would love long hair”. Obviously, if I insisted on a short back and sides, she’d oblige but because she “knows” me she just says “what about an inch or so off?” and then I always look the same! 😂. DH says “have you had your hair done?? 🤔”

I am growing out a short bob, but where there was no fringe and had the same problem. My forehead isn't particularly high, but the hair is so white at the front, and it's tied up so often, I just looked sort of bald and ancient on webex/zoom calls etc. So last week (1st haircut since Christmas) I explained to the hairdresser who cut in a "grown out fringe" with a centre parting. I can't bear anything on my forehead so it doesn't sit like a fringe does, it's long enough to tuck behind my ears if it's annoying me, but short enough that when I tie back, it can escape and give me some face framing and less of the "slaphead" look I was sporting before. Might be worth a think?

Amdone123 · 19/05/2021 08:28

I love that 'can't-be -botheredness', am going to use that.
Yes, your hair is lovely, but like you say, it's doing nothing. If you wanted it shorter, you don't have to go for the traditional bob. It could be edgier.
Or how about shoulder length, with layers so it's more volume?
I'm not a hairdresser, so could be talking rubbish, but yes, I would have a change.

Bellyups · 19/05/2021 11:28

@HeraInTheHereAndNow your hair is amazing. A sweeping fringe would look fab

HeraInTheHereAndNow · 19/05/2021 12:30

@dgirluk yes! Slap head. That’s me most of the time unless I make a point of using a bit of mousse/hairspray. Can you do a pic?

@Amdone123...you’re welcome 😊

OP posts:
HeraInTheHereAndNow · 19/05/2021 12:36

I’ve tried a bit of Volume Mousse today to keep it up which lifts it off my forehead but ... it WILL NOT stay there. Maybe, I need a product that nails it into place!

Can’t get into hairdresser til second week of June (though we might be locked down again! 😡) so, will have to sit tight anyway.

@HeraInTheHereAndNow nothing constructive to add re your hair other than to say you look stunning!!! Leave it
@HeraInTheHereAndNow nothing constructive to add re your hair other than to say you look stunning!!! Leave it
Agreed.

Honestly, you look younger with the longer hair.

I’m having a hair crisis at the moment, it’s currently in a short, shaggy bob but looks awful. I’m contemplating a pixie but have a square face, strong chin and a high forehead (I know, what a babe) and so I’m wary. It might be lockdown-itis, so I’m sitting on the urge for a bit and have bought a cheap wig off t’internet to try it out before going for the chop. I’ve already committed a lockdown dye disaster sin, so I’m trying not to make another hair mistake as my hair grows slowly and it’ll take forever to undo.

RaisinFlapjack · 19/05/2021 13:48

I’ve got nothingmuch to add apart from to say how the hell are you 59?! I look older than you and I’m 43!!

Also I think the long hair looks fabulous on you. Fringe would work but I would keep most of the length.

TortoiseShed · 19/05/2021 14:05

I love your long hair! Please don't cut it!

I like the fringe idea but think maybe it's even better how you've styled it in your most recent pic.

Graffitiqueen · 19/05/2021 14:05

The shorter hairstyles you have shown are quite ageing. honestly you look amazing in that last photo, keep the length!!
