What do you do to try staying looking young?

I'm 36 and always was blessed with looking young for my age....well until recently 😂 Over the last 6mths I am really beginning to look old!!

I've never really been one to use lotions and potions lol but maybe I need to start 🤣

It just got me thinking, what do other women do or use to help stay looking youthful?

SPF every day (only started a couple of years ago). Lots of hyaluronic acid with moisturiser on top to keep skin hydrated and so a bit more plumped. Glycolic acid toner every few days to stop skin getting dull.

That's it really. I am toying with the idea tretinoin but don't know if I want to go there really!

madamecake · 14/03/2021 23:34

Prescription strength retinol! I use Dermatica for tretinoin to help with fine lines.

Also, not losing too much weight, I have a certain weight which once I go under, look gaunt and older.

Rapidbrow to help regrow my over plucked brows, I think thicker straighter brows look more flattering and youthful.

Keeping on top of grey hairs, even a few strays seem to age me by 10 years.

Other than that not very much! Don’t really fancy Botox or anything, just want to look good for my age and less tired!

How do you get prescription strength?

Retinol
Botox
Fillers in cheekbone to scaffold face and stop it slipping down

XO under eye cream at night
XO spf 50 powder on top of make up

Any moisturiser- I use loads of different ones. I've not found one with spf that's nourishing enough so I use a powder on the top

madamecake · 14/03/2021 23:42

@mumof5cn Dermatica prescribe based on an online consultation, you have to upload photos, your health history and so on and a doctor will prescribe and it’s gets posted out to you.

lovelilies · 15/03/2021 00:26

Following with interest (40 and don't use anything except moisturiser!)
Am always wary that all these lotions and potions are just a con and waste of money.

What actually works? Or is it a case of trial and error?

Delatron · 15/03/2021 12:07

The only cream that has any evidence with regards to ageing in prescription strength retin-a.
SPF also essential.

Vitamin C serums are good for brightening skin and supposedly help against pollution etc.

I wouldn’t spend any money on an expensive branded moisturiser. I use Cerave for night time when not using retinols. In the day I use vitamin C serum then SPF over the top. I do spend a lot on the vitamin c serum but that penetrates the skin more than a moisturiser and does more.

Then lots of good fats in your diet. So salmon, avocados, nuts etc.

Candleabra · 15/03/2021 12:23

Loads of water. Good healthy diet (not low fat) and exercise. No alcohol. Boring, but no magic potion - sorry!

HummusAndCarrotSticks · 15/03/2021 12:29

Hydrate and no alcohol. I'm planning to cut out sugar once I've gotten over the loss of my beloved booze!

I'm 37 and have noticed my skin getting really dry lately. I've always had problem skin (rosacea), but previously the issue was always too much oil. Now it's the opposite! I've had to cut down on the niacinamide and up the hydrating things instead.

Lamentations · 15/03/2021 12:31

Good skincare routine - thorough cleansing and glycolic acid and retinol on alternate days. A good serum AM and PM and definitely SPF - all year round plus wearing decent sunglasses and a hat when it's full sun.

For my body I minimise sugar and grains and don't drink (for other reasons but it's had a huge impact). I use a loose version of Whole 30 if you are interested in what that looks like - never go hungry.

I also do sets of squats, ab exercises and push ups whenever I think of it, waiting or the kettle to boil or whatever - usually 3 or 4 times a day. It takes nothing out of my day but has made a big difference to how I look naked.

Milomonster · 15/03/2021 12:49

Boring but lots of water, good sleep, no alcohol or cigs, no junk, long walks and yoga and a very simple skincare routine and good quality makeup.

PersonaNonGarter · 15/03/2021 13:18

Lots of water
No alcohol
Regular trips to fashionable hairdresser
Expensive skincare

minipie · 15/03/2021 13:24

I don’t.

I figure all the money I’ve saved by not using fancy lotions and cosmetic treatments will add up and buy me a facelift in my 50s....

SPF and retinol are probably the only topical treatments that make a difference.

troppibambini6 · 15/03/2021 13:29

Another one for prescription retin A
SPF every day
Lots of water
Fresh air
I've recently quit sugar and the difference in my skin is unbelievable
Botox
I don't have an grey hairs yet which helps (I'm 43)
A decent diet with not too much alcohol

user1488722687 · 15/03/2021 13:44

I've just looked at the dermatica and I've signed up. Today is my first day of zero alcohol and I've already had over a litre of lemon water! Let's do this

allfurcoatnoknickers · 15/03/2021 13:52

Another vote for prescription strength retinol - I have PCOS which left me with horrific acne scarring, so I get mine from a dermatologist.

I also drink tons of water and wear sunscreen every single day, even if the weather's crap. Also wear sunglasses whenever it's sunny, even if it's December and you feel like a dick.

I don't use very expensive skincare. Mostly Neutrogena and some Cera-vie/Bioderma/Embryolisse.

doadeer · 15/03/2021 14:00

There's always people on these threads who say they use soap and water and look 20 years younger. For me this would leave my face an absolute mess.

I use serum, acids, moisturisers and Retinol and Spf - I absolutely adore skincare and for me it's a key part of my evening routine. I can just live with moisturiser and Spf but I really glow if I follow a nice routine.

Lots of sleep, low stress, water, healthy, low booze but overall I think sun is a huge cause of aging.

AmongUs · 15/03/2021 14:05

I've learnt my lesson as over the years I've got sucked in by the ads and shopping channels believing I needed every product and then ended up with a face full of spots.
Keeping things more simple now. Sometimes less is more. My skin can't tolerate retinol so I just make sure the basics are done everyday cleanse and moisturise twice a day.
Have recently found a spf that doesn't break me out so just started using that every morning too.

requitalissima · 15/03/2021 14:20

Have superb genes Grin.
Really helps.
Stay slim.
Apart from that, loads of water and sleep, exfoliate regularly, play with different acids, SPF 50, French pharmacy hoard of inexpensive potions - such fun.
Bit of strategic Botox twice a year.
Never had a sweet-tooth, nor do I like carbs. Eat loads of eggs, fish, meat, leafy things, tomatoes - love them in every shape and form, more fish. More eggs in every which way. Nuts, lots of nuts. More water and green tea, by buckets.
Collagen supplements and various vitamins/minerals.
However, drink like a fish as life's too short and I enjoy good wine, champagne and gin. A lot!
Never chase 'trends' in fashion, know what shapes suit me and stick with them, always buy quality.
Ah, me, the wonderful me, Grin
'Tis sounds like such a load of self-congratulatory gaff, really, however, works for me.

hippospot · 15/03/2021 14:30

Early nights
Lots of water
Not much alcohol
Hardly any caffeine
Regular exercise
Strength training
SPF every day
Diet rich in oily fish, nuts, avocado, olive oil, seeds, veg.
Organic food mostly.
Always brown grains not white.
Various vitamin and mineral supplements and probiotics.
Try to limit sugar.
Serum
Facial oil
Acid toner
French pharmacy skincare
Regular haircuts (though I don't colour my greys).

I don't look a day under my actual age :)

Juliesipadwillcallyouback · 15/03/2021 14:43

What actually works? Or is it a case of trial and error?

Tretinoin works, but it takes literally years to actually reverse any ageing, because you have to be very careful with it. I'm not really sure what the short term effects are, I think just more glowy and clear skin.

Delatron · 15/03/2021 15:07

I don’t think there are any positive short term effects of tretinoin! Often skin looks worse before it looks better. Most people give up. It was at least 9 months before I saw any improvement..

Sprining · 15/03/2021 15:10

Vitamin C and Vit E for me. 2 to 3 times a week at night.

Unfortunately I don’t like the feel of spf so never sue sun protect. I do wear a hat though in summer

Sprining · 15/03/2021 15:11

And yes, regular exercise! Including face toning 😊 That makes the biggest difference in how young I look and feel!

Delatron · 15/03/2021 15:25

I think with regards to sun protection lots of people (I didn’t until a few years ago) don’t realise that the UVA rays (which are the ageing ones) are present at the same strength all year round and penetrate cloud. So just as important to wear SPF in the winter. If ageing bothers you.
