What do you do to try staying looking young?

I'm 36 and always was blessed with looking young for my age....well until recently 😂 Over the last 6mths I am really beginning to look old!!

I've never really been one to use lotions and potions lol but maybe I need to start 🤣

It just got me thinking, what do other women do or use to help stay looking youthful?

@AlohaMolly yes to using night cream after cleansing. You need to get the dirt and pollutants from the atmosphere off your skin and feed it with a night cream. The body repairs itself while we sleep. SPF is Sun Protection Factor, the higher the better, that's for UV B rays. UV A rays have a star rating from one to five stars, the higher the better. For daytime you want a cream with both UVA and UVB protection, it will say on the packaging if it has them. It's in some face creams already, but usually at a low level. You can also use your usual face cream without any UV protection and then use a separate sunblock cream on top.

I don't focus so much in looking younger I just try not to look old, which I think is about making an effort. I see people who are only in their 20s but they look awful, they look more like how you expect someone old to look, like it's all about comfort and convenience. That's fine if they're happy looking like that, but I don't want to look like that.

I don't follow fashion too much, but if something is totally and completely out of date I won't wear it. I don't see that happening any more thought, which is good, current fashion seems to be wear whatever you want. I buy from fashionable shops so whatever I buy is automatically current. I never choose comfort over style, items need to fulfill both criteria.

Skincare is cleansing followed by serum, oil, gel cream, moisturiser and sunblock, then makeup. At night I use a face wash, a more intensely moisturising serum, plus the other things but no sunblock. I bath daily and use body moisturiser too. This is all because I have eczema and is what's needed to keep it under control.

I'm pescetarian and drink lots of water and herbal tea. Do yoga and always get 8hrs sleep. I like to get outside into daylight and fresh air and nature. I don't do this to look young it's just my lifestyle.

Absolutely nothing! I don’t drink much or smoke and that’s all I need

knockles · 20/03/2021 19:14

i am 49 in June and am holding on to the fact I'm not grey yet. I'm sure it won't be long though. Got to be grateful for a small mercy. The idea of having to go to get it dyed and the cost is something I want to avoid for as long as possible. I may look into a moisturiser for skin, can only help. I've never moisturized..Ooops!

knockles · 20/03/2021 19:15

P.S I do drink 3-4 liters of water a day.

After a severe reaction to an expensive face cream, my dermatologist recommended I use Cetraben moisturizer. Cheap as chips. Slightly greasy but after I've applied it and left it to soak in for a few minutes, I remove the grease. I reckon it works because in my am dram groups was always asked to take on the title roles of characters 10 - 20 years younger than my actual age (okay - lighting and makeup helped! I'm not a total idiot!). I'm also 5ft 3 and 8 stone. I can't eat all the fruit and veg I'd like to because of severe IBS, but I try to eat healthily. And I like to dress younger without being stupid about it. My hair is still red ( no dyes) though with a couple of grey bits woven in now. So - don't be swayed to spend tons of money on skin care by advertising (Jane Fonda doesn't look good solely because of the stuff she says she uses on her face). Lose some weight if you are fat, though don't go overboard about it, and laugh a lot. 😊

nopuppiesallowed · 20/03/2021 19:38

But I'd really love some advice on tooth whitening...I do love coffee and red wine!

SweatyBetty20 · 20/03/2021 19:46

Didn’t have kids. Obviously I didn’t not have kids to save my skin but at 48 I look a lot younger than my friends who have kids - maybe it’s a relative lack of worry and stress.
Oily skin - I don’t use anything other than Pears soap on my face and no moisturiser as it brings me out in zits.
I have really fair Celtic skin so I never sunbathe - I will never go brown so there’s no point; I just slap on the F50 if I’m on holiday or it’s a hot day and get on with life.

Cotswoldmama · 20/03/2021 22:06

Can anyone recommend an spf for my face that doesn't pill? I've been looking at the water one and the face mist ones. Has anyone tried these, are they ok under make up? Thank in advance!

doadeer · 20/03/2021 22:06

Beauty Pie SPF and Primer is really good I think

Not sure I'm doing better than average on the skincare front but:

Hair - biotin shampoo and conditioner- my hair is awesome now and always used to be thin/ dry/ greasy.

Body; decent well fitting push up bra. And abs workouts.

I'm 43.

requitalissima · 21/03/2021 07:29

Have pondered about this and few other similar threads running here at the moment, and came to realisation that I have never felt the need to look 'younger' per se, not that I'm old, mind, but I've always wanted to look the very best I can. Do things to my face and body - as in lotions/potions/exercise/ food/booze/etc. - that work for me and make me look fabulous.
I really don't aspire to look 'younger' and the dreaded mutton in sheep's clothing effect is too ghastly to contemplate.
I want to take the material that I have - me - and make it glow Grin.
Makes me happy!

requitalissima · 21/03/2021 07:41

@AmberItsACertainty
Excellent post, agree with everything you say, including the fashion part.
I think true fashion-victims are people who insist on filling their wardrobes with the very latest mass-produced 'on-trend' offerings and always look worse than people who give a playful nod to current trends and incorporate something cheap and cheerful from 'on-trend' offerings, as devout fashion-followers often fail to see that the 'current' pieces just don't suit them and insist on wearing them anyway.

MrDarcysMa · 21/03/2021 07:54

Exercise, loads of water, sleep, glycolic acid, HA and sunscreen, rose oil with retinol on an evening.

Cotswoldmama · 21/03/2021 08:18

Thank you @ERFFER I'll try that!

bunbakes · 21/03/2021 09:23

After lockdown skin I've started using Vit c serum my skin looks good again and best it's looked in about a year.

Appletreehat · 21/03/2021 11:20

I don't drink alcohol (I don't like the taste!) Dont smoke,
I've been wearing SPF on my face since I was about 22 (thanks mum!)
Drink lots of water, walk everywhere, get fresh air, take a Vit D tablet, I have a good skincare routine inc a good vit c serum & eyecream and intensive lip balm overnight ( I think dry lips can instantly age you) l eat a mostly Mediterranean diet, not much meat, and try to have a positive outlook on life, I'm quite laid back which helps with stress levels. I have a 18 month DC who has never 'slept through' but I don't feel tired very often as I still get a good 7 or 8 hours sleep ( plus a lovely little daytime nap occasionally when DC naps!)

I don't do the above to just look younger, I'm only 34, I do it as it makes me feel good and is part of my lifestyle, which I really enjoy. I feel healthy which is important and I want to be able to keep up with my DD!

Make up wise - I keep my eyebrows neat and shaped , wear mascara, lipbalm, a pink/coral lipstick and a light peachy blush, sometimes a little liquid highlighter on cheekbones. I never wear powder as I don't like my face to look matte, I think dewy skin looks younger and fresher.

I wear clothes that I feel good in. I would never go out of the house in a tracksuit or joggers - there's nothing wrong with that at all, it's just not me.

Namechange2790 · 21/03/2021 12:34

There’s a million of lotions and potions out there but the general basics of looking young are free.

Avoid alcohol
Don’t smoke
Drink plenty of water
Sleep well
Fresh air and exercise
Happy outlook on life
And always remove your make up before going to sleep!

Then you can add in whatever extras you like from just soap and water to silk pillowcases and top of the range acids. I only use liz Earle cleanser and no7 serum, with the occasional face mask, and regularly get mistaken for being 10 years younger but good genes also helps there

Vicliz24 · 21/03/2021 12:45

@ThorFull

I’m so disheartened to read that so many women are covering greys. I’m 36 and the greys are becoming very prominent on my dark hair. I’m determined to embrace them, while still exercising, eating well, cutting right back on alcohol (chocolate next). I’m considering some highlights(?) to perhaps blend them in a little, but certainly not to cover them. I’m wearing my bigger pieces of silver jewellery now I’m finally going out to work again, to complement my silver hair. I’m using oil treatments and looking at new hairbrushes to keep the greys smooth and not frizzy. I want to look my age- which is still young! But with silvery hair. I think it’s possible.
This . I have completely grey hair , I'm 56 but I love it . The only things I ever use on my dkin are natural oils . Avocado, squalane etc . I wear tinted moisturiser with spf 50 every day and keep my clothes fairly current. I run 10 k three times a week and walk my dogs every day . Beautiful doesn't have to mean artificial at all .
NeedToGetOuttaHere · 21/03/2021 12:48

I’m 52 and only have a few greys which I dye, I’m not going to embrace going grey, I like having shiny brown hair.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 21/03/2021 12:51

Proper and regular night's sleep is top of my list.

Tightwad2020 · 21/03/2021 15:21

I am finally getting accustomed to my grey. (I'm 55). My hair is dark, quite thick, currently a bit longer than I'd like (collar-bone length), and I usually straighten it. I've got grey at the front, and lockdown has given me a chance to grow it out and get more used to it. I don't want to go the full Mary Beard, but neither, as I turn the corner to 60, do I want to tilt too much in the direction of Nigella in all her wiggy, injected, and well-upholstered glory.

So I am going grey, but carefully! I'm going to get a couple of properly silver streaks put in when I can get to the hairdresser. In the meantime, I use that root touch-up spray and try to keep it all looking shiny.

LunaNorth · 21/03/2021 16:13

I think Nigella looks beautiful.

Namechange2790 · 21/03/2021 16:53

I think full grey is beautiful, but salt and pepper hair is quite ageing. I’m 36 and have found about a dozen white hairs over the last year so am not dying it to cover them because I don’t like having the odd ones.
