Can we talk about jeans?

So, I need a new pair of jeans. Was never a huge fan of skinnies but eventually just went with it.

I’m glad they’re apparently on the way out, but I’ve only just realised the benefit of them - you could wear with flats without them scraping the ground. Anyone remember baggy/flared/bootlegs getting soaked to the knee up? (I’m 5’ 4” and standard length scrape while petit are too short.

What jeans are you wearing? What’s my solution?! Help!

I feel the same as you about skinnies. For the last couple of years I've been wearing ankle length boyfriend or straight cut jeans. I also got a pair of vintage levis from ebay that are lovely on.

For cheapness Sainsbury's Girlfriend Jeans are good to try and see if you like the style first. I'd recommend sizing down.

BallsToYouSue · 20/02/2021 10:44

I wear straight leg jeans, usually turned up to ankle grazer sort of length. Fine for wettish days with trainers, but not awful winter weather.

I wear skinnies under knee boots in winter weather, because they are the only jeans which fit under knee boots. That has nothing to do with fashion though and I will keep wearing that combination to keep me dry and warm. Dresses and tights with boots work for the wet, but not for the cold. So for me, on cold AND wet days, it's skinnies.

I do own a pair of bootcut jeans which have been around (again) for a couple of years I think. But they aren't practical, i agree, especially in the rain or mud. I don't really wear them.

I love mom jeans and barrel jeans on other people, but they don't suit me.

BallsToYouSue · 20/02/2021 10:45

Yes, I also love gf jeans and Sainsbury's do nice enough ones quite cheaply. I tend to need a smaller size there.

MrsBobDylan · 20/02/2021 10:57

You need a tapered leg (also called balloon leg, carrot leg) or a jogger jean. Sorted!

TaylorSwaft · 20/02/2021 11:47

I'd second the Sainsbury's girlfriend jeans although annoyingly they seem to have sold out. I've just bought some Melly & Co skinny jeans which I am a bit on the fence about. I'm a size 14 but with a bit of a middle although my legs are okay. So I like the fact that they fit like leggings but I'm just a bit unsure because I think they are made for a much slimmer person. Jeans are a nightmare! I love them but really struggle with finding flattering comfortable age/body suiting ones. I'm not fussy about brands and don't mind paying more but seems silly to when the £16 Sainsbury's ones fit so well!

Pennethorne · 20/02/2021 16:53

I have no idea what cut to go for. I'm 5 foot 2 - most cuts don't have any time between hip and the floor to convey a look! Straight look wide. Slim look ill-fitting. Wide, I look like a pepperpot.

SingleHandSue · 20/02/2021 16:59

I really struggle to find jeans. I keep going with skinny because no others suit me at all.

I’d love to wear mom jeans but because I’m a fat in the middle size 14 they look awful at the waist.

I thought straight leg jeans would work but I have very large calves so they’re tight where they shouldn’t be on the leg.

fluffygreenmonsterhoody · 20/02/2021 18:47

Gah, lost a whole post. Hadn’t heard of girlfriend jeans, and definitely not heard of carrot jeans so will check them out.

Getting a cheaper pair from Sainsbury’s sounds like a plan. Who’d ever have thought when I was frequenting Topshop and Miss Selfridge that 20 years a supermarket would be my no 1 clothes shop!

Do we think skinnies are definitely on the way out?

Skinnies will always be useful to me, for under knee boots. I've never worn them any other way anyway. I never liked them with trainers for example and I haven't worn them with ankle boots for years either really. So it won't change anything for me if they do go out of fashion. I'll still wear them under knee boots no matter how unfashionable they are, as they keep me warm and dry Smile!

I was surprised to see leather look leggings getting more and more popular, as I did think that silhouette with painted on trousers, was not the thing anymore... but they are everywhere! So, who knows really?

Thesheerrelief · 20/02/2021 19:11

Sadly yes, it seems skinnies are on the way out. I may buy an extra pair of my favourites to stockpile. I have just ordered the sainsbury's girlfriend petite jeans because of this thread and I do have a pair of mom jeans but I don't think I can pull them off. I'm 5' 4" and a solid 12 but not in any way cool.

fluffygreenmonsterhoody · 21/02/2021 11:51

Girlfriend jeans - now I know what they are... what do you wear on your feet!? Don’t your ankles get cold? A Scottish winter is not the place for bare ankles!

Sooverthemill · 21/02/2021 12:00

Skinnies aren’t on the way out but they are just one of a range of jeans shapes. Straight, barrel, relaxed, slim, boyfriend, girlfriend, flare, boot leg, wide leg then add in all the cropped versions!

I live all the shapes and wear my skinnies, girlfriend, boyfriend and straight probably the most. I buy from hush, Baukjen, Boden and premium brands too ( often via eBay), oh and Levi’s

Footwear: trainers, ankle boots, sandals

BikeRunSki · 21/02/2021 12:07

I think MN causes a run on them about once I month.

I wear mine with Blundstone ankle boots.

Sickoffamilydrama · 21/02/2021 12:50

I was the same as you and ordered a load from Next a while back so I didn't have to worry about paying loads then waiting ages for the money to be returned.

Although I'm 5ft 8" so often have the opposite problem with leg length.

These are my new favourites from Boden, I wear long black socks with the boots so there's no cold patches.

Someone said about the Mom style and I actually have the typical post four year old baby pouch and the extra fabric at the waist actually conceals it but I imagine it's dependent on where you are carry extra weight.

Can we talk about jeans?

Having experienced almost 50 Scottish winters, and being a fan of many styles of jeans and trousers, I can confirm the answer is socks. Possibly also tights if it's sub zero.

Ellpellwood · 21/02/2021 13:33

I wear my girlfriend/straight leg jeans rolled to hit the top of ankle boots or hi-top trainers.

Boogiewoody · 22/02/2021 15:48

In winter I wear shorter jeans with boots (DMs) or black leather high top Converse

harknesswitch · 22/02/2021 15:52

I'm 5'3" and I find boyfriend or 'baggy' type jeans just make me look shorter and fatter than I am. I've started to wear straight leg which seem to flatter more and if I buy the petite ones they come up slightly shorter which look good with trainers. I wear my skinnies with boots in the winter

GeidiPrimes · 22/02/2021 22:37

I just bought these slim mom jeans from Weekday, and must say I'm chuffed to bits with them. Proper denim, without loads of lycra (they have a bit I think).

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/02/2021 22:49

I ditched all my skinny jeans a few years ago, and now wear balloon or barrel leg, or Levi’s 501s. All slightly cropped, I tend to wear knee-high socks underneath in cold weather, with either trainers or DM monkey boots

I have been reading people on here saying skinnies are on the way out, since I joined in 2007 Grin. Judging by the people I see at the park or walking past my house on a daily basis, most are still wearing them.

BrideofBideford · 22/02/2021 23:07

I borrowed a pair of my husbands wide-leg jeans, love em. The reach to top of my feet but not the floor. Fitted (ahem) around the hips but wide all the way through.

Back to wearing men’s jeans, just like I did in 1990 Grin

I guess I could buy “boyfriend jeans” but this is the real thing Wink

Laufeythejust · 22/02/2021 23:11

I’m pleased skinnies are on the way out they make me look like Dr Eggman. I must say I struggle to find a shop that sells anything but (I must shop at very uncool places!). I like the next straight legged bum enhancing ones but annoyingly a 10 is too tight and a 12 too big.

Sooverthemill · 23/02/2021 09:09

Skinnies are NOT on the way out! There's been a big resurgence in sakes in 2020 and tons of people are wearing them but thank goodness there are dozens of styles to choose from if you don't like them.
