Can we talk about jeans?

So, I need a new pair of jeans. Was never a huge fan of skinnies but eventually just went with it.

I’m glad they’re apparently on the way out, but I’ve only just realised the benefit of them - you could wear with flats without them scraping the ground. Anyone remember baggy/flared/bootlegs getting soaked to the knee up? (I’m 5’ 4” and standard length scrape while petit are too short.

What jeans are you wearing? What’s my solution?! Help!

I get cold ankles as well. When it is warm enough to wear cropped trousers I would rather wear a dress.

Bexstar09 · 01/03/2021 17:37

The Sainsburys girlfriend jeans are fab, I am a 5ft2 pear and they are flattering and comfy, a relief to stop with the skinny jeans and don't look outdated like my old boot cut jeans

Loopyloututu2 · 01/03/2021 17:59

Unless they’re young/hipsters/art students or models I just can’t see loads of ordinary women giving up their flattering skinny jeans for the universally unflattering tapered/mum jeans. They even look frumpy on the models.

I agree. Mom/boyfriend jeans only look good on trendy young things - it’s like an irony/rehash of the 80’s/90’s thing isn’t it?
On me (40) I just look like I’ve dug around the back of my wardrobe and found some old relics from the 90’s that still fit and am wearing them to go to a NKOTB reunion!
I think those slightly stonewashed ones someone posted up thread are just awful (as I said, unless you’re young and skinny).
I tend to wear hush joggers or sweaty Betty workout leggings. I may get some slightly more “slim leg” cropped jeans rather than skinnies soon but it’ll be hard for me!
Maybe it’s about the overall look and you have to be a bit alternative with the right hairstyle?
I have some of the coated jeans from hush and leather look leggings but I’ve also seen them looking horrific on people so I’m a bit scared! They give you lumps and bumps you probably don’t really have.

@fluffygreenmonsterhoody
Mom Jeans here
I am a pear with non-enhanced Kardashian hips...and Kardashian tiny waist, but look more like Kanye in the chest...measurements are about 32- 24-42... Dreadfully difficult to find any bottoms to fit my bodaciousness...even the Kardashian's Jean brand didn't fit correctly. I was in a charity shop and found a pair of Mom Jeans that fit me like they were especially made for me....100% cotton which I love because being menopausal the spandex in modern jeans make me sweat😰
I finally worked out that because of the style, the 100% cotton, and brand( Brittania, remember them?) that they were at least 40 years old...and they'd never been worn!
These are the only jeans that have fit me since the late 70's....Hahahalol, I hate when my body shape goes out of style...but somewhere I heard mom jeans are making a comeback... hope they are 100 % cotton Grin

The thing is when skinnies came back into fashion about 15 years ago, lots of people said they wouldn't wear them and they only looked good on very slim people, but over time everyone got used to them and now people of all shapes and sizes wear them, so it seems as if views of what is flattering has changed.
AnExcellentWalker · 01/03/2021 20:18

I’ve never got on with skinny or bootcut. Prefer slim leg, ideally. In proper, non stretch denim. My last pair lasted years (Next) but they discontinued them, the bastards. Never found any as good.

AnExcellentWalker · 01/03/2021 20:25

DietrichandDiMaggio - I’m not sure people think they’re any more flattering now, it’s just that there’s less decent alternatives available. Skinny jeans & jeggings (I.e. more comfortable skinny jeans) seem to dominate in many shops.

CalmConfident · 01/03/2021 20:26

@spiderlight exactly the same ones here !

kennycat · 01/03/2021 20:35

It took me so long to get into the skinnies trend and now I can't imagine wearing anything else. I don't think I can face the draught up the legs, the soggy bottoms, the not being able to wear with knee high boots of any other type of jean. The news that they are on their way out has now made me sad and I think I'm just going to have to be really out of fashion for the rest of my life now!

carolinesbaby · 01/03/2021 20:48

So what jeans do we recommend for a nearly 40, nearly six foot size 16? Never liked skinnies; they just don't feel right. Like glared and wide leg jeans with higher rise and fitted hips, but hard to find the right length. Never sure what footwear to put with them. And grew up never being able to find jeans long enough (for the fashion of them touching the floor at the heel) and now that cropped/rolled jeans are in, I can't get used to them not feeling too short!

Sickoffamilydrama · 01/03/2021 21:33

@itsmeagainagain thanks Blush

Just in case you haven't seen these on other posts I can definitely not recommend any of these if you have a figure similar to mine all from Sainsbury's Mom, Girlfriend & Barrel leg. The proof is in the pictures 🤣

Although definitely high waisted Mom style if I can find a decent leg style. Will try M&S next which @Sooverthemill recommend to me on another thread!

I want a relaxed soft high waisted style.

I've been wondering about moving away from skinnies, but no leg styles seem to suit me - I'm 5'3" and a very square looking size 18 with short, stumpy legs. I look dumpy in everything so I don't suppose it matters much?

BrideofBideford · 01/03/2021 21:57

So funny, about 12-15 yrs ago, on here, people said skinnies were universally unflattering and their low rise boot cuts would have to be prised out of their cold dead hands Grin Skinnies would never be mainstream as universally unflattering, unless worn by the young and thin.... lots of mentions of “looking like a parsnip” in them, and not being able to wear them for the over 49s as it was a rehash if the 70s..Grin

Plus ça change Wink

BrideofBideford · 01/03/2021 21:59

@Sickoffamilydrama I think the first 2 of those look nice on you, imo

RampantIvy · 01/03/2021 22:02

I'm not keen on buttons instead of a zip.

Weemovitchski · 01/03/2021 22:16

Levi's 501, preferably used from eBay. I am 28x34 so can usually find them for a reasonable price.

SarahLox77 · 01/03/2021 22:19

@BallsToYouSue

Yes, I also love gf jeans and Sainsbury's do nice enough ones quite cheaply. I tend to need a smaller size there.
The Sainsburys girlfriend jeans are fantastic; well made, really comfortable and only £16 a pair!
NeedWineNow · 01/03/2021 22:19

I'm sticking with my skinnies although I did have my girlfriend jeans on today rolled up with flat pumps. I usually wear flats with skinnies or slim or trainers or hightops with rolled up girlfriend or straights.

Sickoffamilydrama · 01/03/2021 22:28

Thanks bride they just aren't quite right, interesting others are saying sainsbury girlfriend as they are ones that didn't work for me. I think it's my big hips but thin legs in that if it fits on my hips then it's too big on my legs, does anyone else get jeans that do this?

SongSilkTrainspot · 02/03/2021 00:24

Skinnies will always be stylish, much like a blazer and leopard print (which has been fully accepted as a staying style I think) flares etc are in fashion though!

ParisJeTAime · 02/03/2021 08:21

I always thought skinnies were a recent thing, but I saw a photo of my mum recently, which must be from the early 90s and she's wearing skinnies, or possibly not skinnies but slim fit, jeans and a loose Breton tshirt! So funny, I'd forgotten that was a thing, but it clearly was. She was quite into fashion, so expect it wasn't an anomaly.

Boogiewoody · 02/03/2021 10:35

@Sickoffamilydrama you should definitely try the M&S mom jeans as that's exactly what they're like. I love mine they're so comfy. The boyfriend jeans they do are also good, a little lower waisted and the legs are non tapered. I live in both of them.

Today I'm wearing the Sainsbury's straight cut £15 jeans that are also good (I roll them up) but they are a thin denim so not great if its cold.

Boogiewoody · 02/03/2021 10:37

Imo skinny jeans already look dated, in a couple of years they'll be what bootcuts were for years - still in shops, still worn but not the height of fashion and will mark the wearer as being a certain age.

BrideofBideford · 02/03/2021 10:45

Yes they’ll be “mum jeans” Grin

Boogiewoody · 02/03/2021 11:34

@brideofBideford yes Grin skinny jeans and ankle boots will be the new bootcut jeans and mumboots everyone on here used to dread
