Can we talk about jeans?

So, I need a new pair of jeans. Was never a huge fan of skinnies but eventually just went with it.

I’m glad they’re apparently on the way out, but I’ve only just realised the benefit of them - you could wear with flats without them scraping the ground. Anyone remember baggy/flared/bootlegs getting soaked to the knee up? (I’m 5’ 4” and standard length scrape while petit are too short.

What jeans are you wearing? What’s my solution?! Help!

I absolutely love these balloon leg jeans from M&S. Bought on a complete whim and now I live in them. They are ankle length on me, perfect for spring summer with Converse.

BrideofBideford · 23/02/2021 13:12

Themuminator you must be quite small bottomed for those to look nice? On my KK butt they’d look awful I think Biscuit

Not biscuit! This one: Grin

Jeans are tricky.

I've bought a pair of Lee mom jeans that aren't too baggy and have a nice high waist (I'm size 12-14 with a mum tum). I like them but I find them difficult to style. If I wear oversized on top I look a bit like I'm trying to hide myself under massive amounts of clothing. And whereas with skinnies I could wear smart-ish tops and silky shirts/blouses these somehow don't look right with mom jeans. The puddle/soggy bottoms in the winter also an issue, which probably means I need to invest in some decent ankle boots so I can turn them up. Not doing bare ankles as I hate being cold.

themuminator · 23/02/2021 13:48

I'm a size 16, so not lacking in butt!

I just feel like this is how jeans should be! I've always hated how tight jeans feel on my thighs and hated the skinny jeans skin tight on my calves.

I think cropped or boxy tops would look better with these balloon jeans. Or a loose shirt tucked in at the front.

VenusClapTrap · 23/02/2021 14:00

I’ve tried mom, girlfriend, boyfriend, wide leg, all look shite on my 5’3” thick-of-waist frame. I ended up buying some Mint Velvet straight legs and rolling up the bottoms. They are neutral rather than fashionable or unfashionable

Anjelika · 23/02/2021 14:00

I don't like skinnies on myself so have been wearing mainly slim jeans. I really want some boyfriend or girlfriend jeans but am struggling to find any. Sent off for 2 pairs from Fat Face - both size 8 - and one were enormous round the waist and the other tiny. Also ordered 2 from White Stuff and they don't fit. Ordered vintage 501's from eBay and they are way too tight on the waist and enormous everywhere else. How hard can it be??

spiderlight · 23/02/2021 14:27

I look like a parsnip in skinny jeans. I live in Next high-waisted slim leg 'Enhancer' jeans. Probably hideously unfashionable but they suit me so I don't care!

Hadalifeonce · 23/02/2021 14:31

Just bought Crew girlfriend jeans after years of being dissatisfied with jeans. I really like them and they are comfortable.

Boggydog · 23/02/2021 14:40

I like girlfriend jean because they give the loose style without the high waist. I’m also petite and find the rise on mom jeans just too high. Agree with previous poster that they are more difficult to smarten up than skinnies although that’s fine in lockdown. My current ones are from Boden as they do petite and denim is good quality, not as frumpy as they sound!

Sooverthemill · 25/02/2021 10:47

@Anjelika try Boden for girlfriend jeans. Honestly they are good

RampantIvy · 25/02/2021 12:47

I have these. I am a size 12 pear shape, and they are a slim fit straight leg. They are far more flattering on me than skinny jeans.

I bought them before the first lockdown, and they wash well.

Anjelika · 25/02/2021 13:19

@sooverthemill Thanks for the rec. The problem is I am a bit of an apple shape and have never got on with Boden trousers or jeans. Size 8 too tight on the waist and Size 10 too big on the hips and thighs. Next jeans are my usual go-to but they don't have any in the shape I want right now.

Anjelika · 25/02/2021 22:14

I picked up a pair of the Sainsbury's girlfriend jeans in my local store tonight and they are the best I've tried so far! Amazing for £16 too!

ChakaDakotaRegina · 26/02/2021 07:56

Any recommendations for apple shapes? I’ve lived in Uniqlo skinnies and Zara basics for years but I’m struggling now with the high waists.

BallsToYouSue · 26/02/2021 11:19

I'm somewhere between an apple and hourglass and I find straight leg or girlfriend the best for me.

Divebar2021 · 26/02/2021 11:43

I wouldn’t say skinny jeans are particularly flattering... certainly not universally flattering. It is possible to get slim cuts which are more flattering which are not long, not boot cut, not flared. ( and if they are too long take them up!) I keep a pair of these to wear with ankle boots. I tried the Sainsbury’s girlfriend jeans in black but the colour faded so horribly so I’m not getting any more. I have a wider cropped pair from ASOS that I like and a blue pair from Monki that I will need to take up slightly to look good. These wider looks I will wear with trainers and sandals in the summer. High waists feel really nice on but as a plus size I like a bit of Lycra in for comfort and better fit.

Nuitsdesetoiles · 26/02/2021 11:49

I'm well, quite skinny and I've tried and tried with other styles but they just don't suit me, I'm small of hip and bum and the baggier styles just make me look like I have no arse. I would like some cropped kick flares though that are fitted round the hips, bum and thigh if anyone has any recommendations? I cannot do baggy/shapeless on the bum!!

itsmeagainagain · 26/02/2021 11:55

@Sickoffamilydrama

I was the same as you and ordered a load from Next a while back so I didn't have to worry about paying loads then waiting ages for the money to be returned.

Although I'm 5ft 8" so often have the opposite problem with leg length.

These are my new favourites from Boden, I wear long black socks with the boots so there's no cold patches.

Someone said about the Mom style and I actually have the typical post four year old baby pouch and the extra fabric at the waist actually conceals it but I imagine it's dependent on where you are carry extra weight.

I love those jeans @Sickoffamilydrama they look fab on you! what are they called. Not sure they would suit me as I'm a pear with a rather large bottom but I love them!
dudsville · 26/02/2021 12:02

I'm absolutely loving the wider leg trouser options at the moment and get a little tense thinking I need to buy them up. Skinnies and straight leg and 3/4, etc., are always available - the wide leg versions aren't. The link up thread to the ones from M&S - those are fabulous! However I think I already have enough so I managed to leave the site without purchasing.

Pigtailsandall · 26/02/2021 14:07

@RampantIvy I've been fiddling with those exact jeans (well, partly because M&S by my office is one of the only places I can fiddle with clothes). They feel so soft. I'm a size 14 and pear shape too. I might bite the bullet and buy them. I have some skinny jeggings I've been wearing non-stop for the last two years and they are ragged.

Any jeans which hide a post-birth mum pouch I'm all ears!

FedNlanders · 26/02/2021 14:18

I'm in-between sizes right now so don't want to buy them just yet but live the m&s and the TU ones. I have next ones but I look like my mum in them!

Anjelika · 27/02/2021 12:25

If anyone's interested, I ordered 9 pairs of boyfriend/girlfriend/slim/relaxed skinny jeans from Next, all various brands and the best on me (apple/boyish shape) are the Mint Velvet boyfriend ones. The Mint Velvet Girlfriends by contrast looked awful. Lipsy slim ones with frayed edges were nice but I couldn't do them up round the waist.

BrideofBideford · 27/02/2021 12:47

I admire your dedication to the cause Grin

Myself, I am very wide hipped so need to do something similar for pear/guitar shaped figure!

cheapskatemum · 27/02/2021 21:12

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who gets cold ankles!
