Considering Rhinoplasty

sah168 · 17/02/2021 11:59

So I had a consultation yesterday for Rhinoplasty - I've wanted a nose job since I was 15 and at the age of 31 I am now in a position where I am able to afford one. I previously had filler in my nose which fixed my side profile, but it obviously did not really do much to narrow my wide nose which is my main area of concern.

I keep going back and forth with my decision on whether to go ahead - the surgeon I saw was great, very realistic in terms of a results and he also uses the Ultrasonic technique as opposed to the 'hammer and chisel' technique, which apparently means less bruising and a quicker recovery.

I've watched so many nose job vlogs so I feel like I sort of know what to expect in the recovery process, but a few have mentioned other side effects that worry me such as hair loss after the surgery (although temporary), spider veins becoming visible on the nose & trouble breathing.

I am also very aware that there is a 10% chance with this surgery that a revision might be needed, regardless of how skilled the surgeon is.

I would love to hear from anyone that's had it done - both good and bad experiences - particularly if you've had the Ultrasonic rhinoplasty! Aware everyone's experience is different, but I find comfort in speaking to other people who have gone through with it!

I had my nose done about 25 years ago, hammer and chisel method. Ouch!

It is the best thing I've ever done. I do feel much less self conscious now, but I hate the awful spider veins. I guess I could try that technique where a beauty therapist zaps them with an electric current but I have so many and the nose is such a sensitive area! I just use a concealer over them when I feel the need.

I was back at work in two or three weeks; the bruises were mostly gone by then. However, my nose still feels sensitive all these years later.

I was very nervous about having it done but the possible outcome far outweighed any possible side effects for me.

sah168 · 17/02/2021 17:12

A lot of people do say it's the best thing they've done - I think you're right in that I just need to weight up how much it bothers me and if any potential side effects are worth it.

Were your spider veins instantly more visible after the surgery, or is it over time?

Also when you say your nose still feels sensitive, is that just if you touch it - so when you're washing your face for example?

I had mine done 16 years ago. Best thing, no problems, so glad I did it.

adhdisabastard · 20/02/2021 04:12

Can anyone tell me anything about the breathing issues?! Are they more of an irritation or can they be serious? I've also been considering a nose job but wouldn't do anything that might fuck with my sleep....

zeddybrek · 20/02/2021 04:18

I had mine done yesterday! I had mine done the old style but I woke up with no bruising so I am really pleased with that. I'd be happy to answer any questions on my experience in terms of recovery.

Pennethorne · 20/02/2021 16:55

I didn't have it done (found it cheaper to just Get Older and then I didn't care anymore), but I did end up injuring my nose anyway in an MMA fight, fractured the bridge. 15 years on it's still very sensitive, and if it gets touched more than a brush I yelp. I massage the bone scarring and it feels horribly sensitive.

BasinHaircut · 14/03/2021 09:34

Did you go ahead OP?

I’m having mine done in 2 weeks @sah168 so happy to report back!

sah168 · 14/03/2021 10:06

@BasinHaircut mine is booked for the 3rd June! I think I’m past the nervous stage now and am just excited to get it done! Are you getting open or closed rhinoplasty?

@zeddybrek how is yours healing?

OP posts:
BasinHaircut · 14/03/2021 12:40

Open. And the surgeon is also using the ultrasonic thingy.

I am so excited too. Mine was originally supposed to be in Jan but got cancelled due to covid so I’m getting impatient now. Grin

I already have a spider vein on my nose, which I was planning to get rid of pre-surgery, but I’m kind of glad I wasn’t able to (covid) now because if there is a chance I might get more then might as well wait and get them all done at once.

sah168 · 15/03/2021 14:48

@BasinHaircut very exciting! I wish I was getting mine done sooner - worried about how I'll cope with recovering in June if we have a heatwave haha!

Look forward to hearing how it goes!

I will report back!

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 15/03/2021 16:32

Have you got big noses or are you changing the shape ! ? I have a smallish nose but it's pointy . I always wanted to change it when I was young but sort of got over it. One of the women on MAFS had a nose job and she looks absolutely amazing . I think it's the thing that makes a huge difference to people faces !

Houseofvelour · 15/03/2021 16:36

Watching with interest. I have always wanted a rhinoplasty and may be in a position to get one in a few years.

DailyCandy · 15/03/2021 16:57

I’ve had two... first one didn’t go so well and needed a revision. That was the old ‘hammer & chisel’ approach. Also 20 year+ ago.
It’s a major undertaking but if you really hate your nose it’s worth it. There was no way I could have had my nose for my adult life. It was that bad. I was teased mercilessly.

sah168 · 15/03/2021 17:59

@huuuuunnnndderrricks mine is quite wide so looks big from the front and I also have a slight hump if you're looking at my side profile. The surgeon said he will narrow it, get rid of the hump and reduce/lift the tip.

Love MAFSA haha!! Are you talking about Martha's nose?

@DailyCandy how long after your first one did you have a revision? Are you happy with your nose now?

OP posts:
huuuuunnnndderrricks · 15/03/2021 18:07

No , I don't like Martha's nose job , it's a bit Michael Jackson 🙈.. Tamara from the same series though had quite a Roman nose and now seems to have the most perfect nose . It's changed her looks completely!

DailyCandy · 15/03/2021 19:52

sah I had to wait a year between surgeries, to allow it to heal first. It was a long year. The 2nd surgery was much better (I bled uncontrollably the first time and they had to stop before it was complete).
I'm fine with my nose now, but it was a source of much grief... I had filler to even out the bridge, which improved it. I still don't like the tip (it's big) - but I would never have another surgery.

BasinHaircut · 15/03/2021 20:06

@huuuuunnnndderrricks yes I have quite a big nose but I have a bumpy nose from a broken nose 25 years ago. It’s not the size that bothers me per se. I’m also having the bridge narrowed slightly and the tip raised as it’s got a bit droopy with age.

I’ve always wanted it done but believe it or not the savings I have made from not commuting for the past year have made it possible financially at 38.

whyhell0there · 15/03/2021 20:50

I've wanted to do this for so long and can now afford to, plus working from home makes it easier... BUT I'm scared of the risks! Of anaesthesia, of losing the ability to breathe through my nose properly, or losing feeling in it etc. What did your surgeons say about these sorts of risks in the consultation?

BasinHaircut · 16/03/2021 07:38

I didn’t really ask about anaesthesia as I have had it a couple of times before so know I’m ok with it.

My surgeon said my breathing should be unaffected (and I asked specifically about being able to sniff!) but there could possibly be some long term loss of feeling.

I had a list of about 30 questions when I went in Grin

I’d say have a consultation and see what you think after that. I wanted it done but like you was on the fence about actually going through with it. There was absolutely no pressure from my surgeon to proceed past the consultation stage but I walked out of there 100% sure I wanted it done.

whyhell0there · 16/03/2021 14:01

Thanks for your reply @BasinHaircut - very helpful. Hope it all goes smoothly for you!

BasinHaircut · 17/03/2021 20:20

@whyhell0there thanks!

zeddybrek · 18/03/2021 21:38

I had mine done exactly 4 weeks ago now.

I felt no pain whatsoever. Woke up from the anaesthetic feeling happy and high and loved it! I have been lucky and had no bruising. Went home with paracetamol, ibuprofen and codeine and I managed on a combination of these for the first few days. Into used codeine at bedtime to help with sleep.

I have about 6 pillows and keeping your head raised is really important with the swelling.

I highly recommend Biotene, a mouth replacement gel. You breathe through your mouth and it gets really dry in the night.

Chewing was really hard so soups and smoothies for a few days.

Have something handy to clean your face as you can't wash, can't get your face wet. I didn't and had a break out.

None of my family or friends have noticed but the before and after picture shows a significant difference.

Happy to answer any other questions you have, I'll try to think of practical tips as you are booked in and going ahead. Very excited for you. I am over the moon with mine!!! Good luck with the procedure, hope it does smoothly!

BasinHaircut · 19/03/2021 06:54

@zeddybrek reading that makes me so excited! Mine is next Saturday! Eeeeeeek!

Will look into biotene thank you.

I’ve already stocked up on tinned soups, rice pudding and oatso simple sachets for afterwards, even though the nurse at my pre-op assured me I would be able to eat normally (I’m not so sure).

I’ve bought some cleanser type stuff too for my face as I assumed it won’t be getting wet for a week or so. Usually I’m a soap and water gal.

How did you find brushing your teeth? I am assuming my electric toothbrush is out the window for a while and I’ve bought a really soft toothbrush (ok, a baby one Grin) so I can at least attempt some kind of tooth brushing. I can cope with not washing my face but not, not brushing my teeth!

zeddybrek · 20/03/2021 17:41

A soft brush is definitely a great idea. First few days it was hard, I still haven't started using mine yet even though healing is going well. Also laughing is really hard, I had to hold my cheeks in place to stop it hurting my nose. Also try to stay warm and bit sneeze first few days!
