Want a pixie cut but I think I’d hate it...

Tell me honestly -

I’ve been dithering over getting short hair for at least 20 years. I have very fine hair and I’d really like to stop worrying about ratty ends! And I always admire women with sharp cuts. But... I’m tall (5’9), my hair has a tendency to either pouf or fall really flat and I dress fairly androgynously. I’m 37. Honestly... I’m going to look like my dad circa 1992, aren’t I?

You don't know until you try it! Would be fab to have a drastic change post lockdown!

However, I've had my hair cut into a pixie a few times, love it for a bit then regret it and grow it again 🙈 You might just love it though!

It's a very easy style to manage, although needs regular trims!

Pinecone90 · 13/02/2021 21:07

@lionpaws Is it genuinely low maintenance...? I feel like mine might spring in all directions and I wouldn’t be able to scrape it back in a bun!!

It's been 20 years. Free yourself from the tyranny of wondering. Get the haircut.

imnottoofussed · 13/02/2021 21:19

I had mine cut short about two years ago and don't think I will ever grow it out. It's so easy takes a few minutes to dry and I don't care if I look like a man Grin the only negative is it needs cutting every 4 weeks and with hairdressers shut it's a nightmare

NovemberR · 13/02/2021 21:25

Love my pixie cut. I've got a bit of curl in mine and it's quite thick, so I just have it cut really short.

2 mins to wash it then I rub a towel over it, scrunch it about with my fingers and leave it. It's dry really quickly and looks good.

PracticingPerson · 13/02/2021 21:27

I keep thijnking about this too, and dithering! Have been thinking for about three years!

But I am not doing anything until I feel very confident hairdressers are staying open and easy to book again as it will need regular cuts.

But once that time comes maybe we should both just get it done?

GeidiPrimes · 13/02/2021 21:31

Or if you're nervous about going really shart ask for a grown out pixie or a shag cut. I have a shag cut, retro but fuck it.

Timpeall · 13/02/2021 21:32

A shart and a shag. Goodness me.

All she wants is a haircut!

GeidiPrimes · 13/02/2021 21:36

My poor hairdresser Sad Grin

I hope you tip well Grin

I think a pixie cut can be really unforgiving so you need the right bone structure for itZ

TheVolturi · 13/02/2021 21:45

Google Alice Cullen hair and have a look, she had lots of different very short hair cuts in the films.

Titsinknicks · 13/02/2021 21:49

Are you thin and gorgeous with a great jawline? If so go for it! If not, regret you didn't do it 20 years ago (sorry, i think unless you are pretty good looking it looks crap on most people)

Volumizing powder is what you need if your hair is fine or flat. Shake a bit into the roots and ruffle with your fingers and you will have lift.
Go for it! Hair grows! You can't always wonder about a haircut Grin

Pinecone90 · 13/02/2021 22:06

@Titsinknicks This is the issue. I had a great jawline and was a size 8 when I went to a hairdresser at 23 and he refused to do it because I ‘would cry’!

Now I’m a 12 and my ever-more-obvious overbite is causing a bit of a double chin Grin I do still have big eyes and good cheekbones though...

@Pinecone90 genuinely low maintenance. Wash, towel, air dry, bit of volumising powder!

IndecentFeminist · 13/02/2021 22:46

I loved mine. If rs a bit outgrown now for obvious reasons which I'm alternating between enjoying and loathing.

I find a genuine short cut very low maintenance, I would genuinely wash it and that was that, maybe a bit of product to weigh down any ends or and texture.

I'm 5'8" and have been between a size 12 and size 18 with short short hair, and it's always looked pretty good.

What sort of shag did you have in mind @geidiPrimes

lazylinguist · 13/02/2021 23:17

I have very fine hair too, and it's poker-straight. I loved the idea of a pixie cut and have tried having one a couple of times, but it's far more effort than having longer hair that I can just tie back. It requires more product and proper blowdrying and still looks flat by the afternoon. It doesn't look pixie on me, it just looks like a short back and sides.

MoltonSilver · 13/02/2021 23:35

I tried it but on my hair short is way higher maintenance. It had to be washed every day because it was sticking out all over the place when I woke up in the morning. It also needed more regular cutting and more precision cutting (which is hard to find). It took more than a year to grow it out. Never again.

ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 13/02/2021 23:45

I had a pixie cut when I was young and lovely, the only time I hated it was first thing in the morning, my god it looked awful, at the time I wanted to look like a femme fatale when I woke up not like I had been dragged through a hedge backwards a dozen times. At your age you will still have a nice jawline to carry it off but I did find it high maintenance, hairdresser every 6 weeks or it looked crap. Long hair I find much easier and lower maintenance, you can always tie it up, I’m very glad I have long hair during lockdown.

GeidiPrimes · 13/02/2021 23:55

Something like this Indecent. A bit like a 90s Helena Christensen?

I would not class that as a pixie, this is what I would call a pixie
