Mumsnet Vogue Vol 89 - Must try harder **Edited at the OP's request**

SO the last 'edition' took over a year to complete. Must try harder Voguettes. Despite the fact that we are still in lockdown, and rarely out of loungewear, there is still inspiration to be found. Spring is springing, brighter days are on the horizon and homeschooling CANNOT last forever (not if miniShop wants to live anyway).
So join us for style & beauty chat, and other inspiration as we navigate our way as stylishly as possible through lockdown 3.

@StripesandSpaniels (do you have spaniels? I do!), I hear you about losing our way in lockdown - I am wearing an I'd rather be in Ibiza t-shirt and SB joggers and Uggs as I type. I miss blogs too - I do enjoy following a Model Recommends on Insta and get her newsletter which is usually fun and has good make up recs but I'm not sure who I'd look to now for style inspo. I'm late 40s - I wonder if it is an age thing, or if the way we consume media is changing?
Wedding sounds fun - lovely to have something to look forward to.

Thanks so much for the welcome and explanation re thread shop Flowers

I dress in quite classic outfits. Loads of neutral colours in my wardrobe. OR I go super feminine and romantic with ice cream colours and floaty dresses. At the moment I love broderie anglaise and rattan/straw, woven handbags.

My budget is more H&M, but I also love looking at Sezane & Needle and Thread to Vivienne Westwood. I get a lot in H&M at the moment and also the odd thing from M&S. Currently browsing Vestiaire for secondhand things too.

I WFH and don't have much need for smart clothes, so I tend to go for smart casual. Like blazers over straight cut jeans and T-shirts, or over shorts and oversized shirts. Lately I've been living in flat shoes (like many people). I'm on the lookout for some nice but comfortable heels. Not massive heels.

I sound like quite a similar shape to queen I think. I'm a tall, (and becoming rather rotund but working hard on that at the moment), hourglass with broad shoulders and decent legs.

TortoiseShed · 20/05/2021 19:09

Random "to" in there. God damn you predictive text!

SummaLuvin · 20/05/2021 19:14

Thanks for all being so welcoming 😊 I guess I should introduce myself.

I’m mid-late twenties. Don’t have my “colours” but I basically look like a very fair Mediterranean - olive skin, dark hair, dark eyes, pale AF. I am average height, quite slim with wider hips and proportionally small waist which makes finding well fitting bottoms a pain in the butt.

Like many people I am trying to shop a little more thoughtfully, I’m not perfect or only buying from eco-brands or secondhand, just making sure I really want something. Typically I shop at Zara, &Other Stories, River Island, and ASOS, though I think you can find absolute gems at H&M.

Style icons - not sure to be honest, I like experimenting and feel I am figuring out my go to style. Recently I have loved Anya Taylor-Joys red carpet looks, and the fashion in The Serpent, and The Queens Gambit. As I didn’t do 60s and 70s the first time round I’m finding those eras revival pretty exciting. I guess my winter look is more 60s and summer more 70s right now. Blair Waldolf is 100% iconic, and her wardrobe is a dream, still love it as much now as I did 10 years ago.

I don’t really buy much designer, but I got a Burberry coat for Christmas - the Chelsea trench in camel, I have this dream it will be handed down the SummaLuvin generations. I’m not familiar enough with designers in general to say which I gravitate towards. I will link a few of my more recent buys I have loved to give people an idea of my style. Most days I am in mom jeans, trainers, and either a t shirt or jumper, not leaving the house. I do love bodies when I want to dress up more but keep it causal, usually paired with my mom jeans.

Ellewoods20 · 20/05/2021 19:19

Hi, can I join you all?
I’ve been lurking on these threads for so long but I didn’t want to intrude Blush.
A bit about me: I’m in my early 20s. I have a somewhat preppy style and my favourite fashion decade is the 60s. I love shopping and Zara. And what seems to be a controversial opinion here I absolutely love puff sleeves.

shopafrolic · 20/05/2021 19:20

@SummaLuvin Am about to do bedtime so will click on all your links later. I clicked on the Stories one, gorgeous dress and fab colour, but just to show how far I've slipped on the style stakes during lockdown I recognised the model from her appearance on Gardener's World Blush
Anyhoo......YY to style in the Serpent and The Queen's Gambit. Just fab. I want to start watching Halston on Netflix next.

OP posts:
shopafrolic · 20/05/2021 19:21

Welcome @Ellewoods20 - this is FAB

Back later I promise

TortoiseShed · 20/05/2021 19:24

Oh I love a lot of your new purchases, summa. Especially love the lambswool/cashmere jumper and the quilted mules.

I've got some to share too! All H&M, M&S and Monki. Will find them and share later as you've probably heard enough from me already this evening!

Also, I think I meant rayon, not queen in my last post, sorry.

StripesandSpaniels · 20/05/2021 19:26

I do have spaniels yes! And would also rather be in Ibiza.
Thanks for the recommendation will check out A Model Recommends. I’ve found I’ve needed to look after my skin more now and have a Beauty Pie subscription which have found some decent products from. Always keen to get more.
I think it is an age thing for me, I don’t particularly want fast fashion now which a lot of Instagram is although do like H and M and Zara but try not to buy too much polyester.
@TortoiseShed I like looking at Sezanne but am never sure on the sizing and worry returns would now be a hassle.

Mumsnut · 20/05/2021 19:32

I’m 50+++ and fat

However, I love my clothes.

Am desperate for some style porn after a year of dog-walking

So far, for the big unlocking, have invested in wide-leg jeans to wear with neat-fitting polos and cloggy shoes.

However, my hems are always wet

SummaLuvin · 20/05/2021 19:33

@StripesandSpaniels I have done two returns with Sezane, both this year post brexit. And it went fine, into possible at the post office, but went to a collect plus location and it was fine, just note that they don’t do a paperless return (as far as I could tell) so you do need a printer for the returns label. It’s also a little slower in comparison to ASOS, but I didn’t have any issues. I love spaniels, especially springers!!! I am often caught staring at other people’s dogs by their owners 🤦🏻‍♀️.

@Ellewoods20 I presume your name is a legally blonde reference? How is that 20 years later it’s still the greatest feminist movie ever made? I am also a puff sleeve lover.

StripesandSpaniels · 20/05/2021 19:45

Thank you, that’s good to know on Sezanne returns, think I’ll place an order. I’ve got working cocker spaniels, they’re quite lively.
Lovely links, the dress is a gorgeous colour. I’m also keen on a puff sleeve!
I liked the fashion in the serpent and also call my agent, made me feel better about my love of skinnies. I’ve got Halston on my list to watch.
Can’t believe Legally Blonde is 20 years old, it was a favourite when I was at uni - feeling old. Also recently rewatched Sex and the City and enjoyed the sentimental in the city podcasts.

SummaLuvin · 20/05/2021 19:48

Sorry, autocorrect got me, my message on returns should say not possible with post office, it has to be collect plus.

Never seen Sex and the City. Seems to big to start now.

Recent purchases! I haven't actually tried any of them on yet, so we will see how they go.

I also ordered some shoes from Monki, but now that I look at them, I don't think they're right, so think they'll go back, sadly. They are heeled mules in a sort of denim fabric...think the issue is the colour or maybe the fabric. Also, now that I've seen summa's quilted flats, I'm quite keen on getting something quilted! But want a heel. Will have a look.

shopafrolic · 20/05/2021 20:17

@StripesandSpaniels working cockers here too :)
In terms of skincare it is my specialist subject. I am obsessed with Caroline Hirons and Sali Hughes. Recently I have subscribed to Skin+Me and it is hands down the best thing I have ever done. No more wasting £££ on products that rarely show results. I have a discount code somewhere if anyone is interested.
@Ellewoods20 I don't mind a puff sleeve either but prefer shoulder detail.
@Mumsnut welcome - damp dog walking is getting really annoying now
@SummaLuvin one of my friends tried Sex & The City over lockdown, I'm not sure it has aged well.

OP posts:
Ellewoods20 · 20/05/2021 20:19

@SummaLuvin it is indeed a legally blonde reference Wink. The puff sleeve cross back top you linked from river island is honestly the best top I’ve bought so far this year.
@TortoiseShed love the colour of that monki dress!

shopafrolic · 20/05/2021 20:20

@TortoiseShed great yellow of the Monki dress - like the denim shorts and the ruched sleeve blazer too - I have similar from Zara and wear it loads.
@SummaLuvin that RI pretty top with those Sezane jeans - gorgeous. So not me, but so pretty. :)

@Ellewoods20 welcome :)

OP posts:
TortoiseShed · 20/05/2021 20:22

Thanks! It was the colour which got me too. I'm not sure about the belt tbh, but will try it on and see. Maybe if I tie it differently.

Stokey · 20/05/2021 20:49

Wow so many new people, how exciting! Welcome @Mumsnut @StripesandSpaniels @RayonSunrise @Ellewoods20 and @SummaLuvin.

I've been loving Call My Agent and being transported to Paris. Of course Andrea is a legend but I also love the way Camille gets more stylish as the seasons progress. There's a pair of jeans in the opening sequence that look like the perfect pair of jeans probably cos the model has no hips.
Love the orange halter neck dress linked above, sadly too much boobage to wear it myself, and the Sezanne jeans.

I bought a good basic stripey midi from Wolf & Badger the other day, a belt and some white linen trousers from Hush which are completely see through so are going straight back!

I'd like some nice tops. I can do a bit of puff but am not very into frills and flounce. I do like a dress though. This was the last shirt I bought from a little independent brand Pyrus that I love, but would like some summery tops.

QueenC going a back a couple of pages to the colour chat, I really wouldn't be surprised if you were a summer rather than a winter. When I think of your skin tone & colouring compared to Shop and me, I feel you are much fairer. I think Blair was a summer IIRC, & could see you being closer in colouring.

TortoiseShed · 20/05/2021 20:52

That belt is fantastic @Stokey! Shame about the Hush trousers as they look nice on their website.

shopafrolic · 20/05/2021 21:02

@QueenCremant @Stokey is right - I've always been bemused that we are supposed to be the same season - I wonder if this is why you are so comfortable in navy and I'm not at all? Hmm
I don't know about Call My Agent - what is it on? Sky? Netflix?

OP posts:
shopafrolic · 20/05/2021 21:04

@stokey You'll look AMAZING in that midi dress - perfect for you
