Mumsnet Vogue Vol 89 - Must try harder **Edited at the OP's request**

SO the last 'edition' took over a year to complete. Must try harder Voguettes. Despite the fact that we are still in lockdown, and rarely out of loungewear, there is still inspiration to be found. Spring is springing, brighter days are on the horizon and homeschooling CANNOT last forever (not if miniShop wants to live anyway).
So join us for style & beauty chat, and other inspiration as we navigate our way as stylishly as possible through lockdown 3.

Although to be fair we only called this MNV - perhaps that’s the problem?

OP posts:
MarshaBradyo · 20/05/2021 13:39

Ha I like Vogue!

I’ll have a think Grin

MarshaBradyo · 20/05/2021 13:40

@shopafrolic

I’d love some fresh blood. In fact, here is my wishlist: 1) Newbies who love friendly fashion chat 2) Links to stuff we love, even if we will never buy it due to budget / lifestyle 3) Chat about decent basics - if we are all in loungewear, exercisewear, jeans etc where are we buying it from? Best place for t-shirts, denim, knitwear etc. 4) Colour chat - I know a lot of us had our colours done but currently I have no idea who is what (used to have an understanding of who was who, style type, colours etc) 5) Beauty chat - what works, what do we repurchase etc - budget buys and £££ treats 6) Outfit planning chat for those of us starting to go out / holiday more 7) a bloody massive MU

I don’t ask for much do I?

Oh and TV / book recommendations with a style theme always appreciated

Love all this

Yes to everything including a big MU

QueenCremant · 20/05/2021 13:40

shop I used to love doing links but I find fashion a bit weird at the moment. I’m not taken with the big pouffy sleeves and cut out bits and big voluminous bottoms.

RayonSunrise · 20/05/2021 15:18

Hello... I've been resolutely ignoring clothes and fashion for most of the pandemic, but between the promise of going out again and actually being in shape for the first time in years (well, SOMETHING good had to come out of being at home all the time) I am suddenly absolutely obsessed with trying to figure out my brink-of-menopause style. I am dying to talk to about clothes.

Most of the current trends don't really work on me though, I have to say. Puffed sleeves and boxy, waistless cuts don't really float my boat. I am feeling quite perky about some of the new jeans shapes, though. Wide leg trousers and jeans are especially appealing at the moment. I just to need to find tops that aren't boxy or puff sleeved...

QueenCremant · 20/05/2021 15:55

rayon, the puff sleeves are everywhere aren’t they? Do they actually suit anyone?

SummaLuvin · 20/05/2021 16:10

Sorry, a couple of pages late, but someone asked if Vogue in the name was putting people off. I think it was @MissKittyKitty

I am fairly new to MN (about 1 year or so), this is my first time on this thread as I had no idea MNV was for MumsNet Vogue! I just didn't know what the thread title meant so I never opened it. Had I known I probably would have done. It was only on the 'what happened to s&b' that I saw the Vogue thread mentioned and I thought that it was strange as I had never seen threads like that. Then I saw this today and it clicked.

So I think the name might be putting people off, but not because it says Vogue, because it doesn't actually say Vogue IYSWIM, it's not clear what the content is. However, I can see why you think Vogue might put people off, as they think they might not quite reach the standard of others in the group. I guess maybe something like the Fashion Forward and Fearless could be cool and more inclusive if you wanted to go that way.

Anyway, will stop rambling because Vogue doesn't even look like a word anymore.

MissKittyKitty · 20/05/2021 16:11

Hi @RayonSunrise step on in and tell us what you like to wear.

*Marsha, I too like the Vogue name but 9/10 I don't feel very Vogue at the moment. I'm having an M&S and Baukjen moment.

Tbh I'm still mourning the loss of JCrew, no Regent St branch and too expensive for delivery and returns. I'm feeling a bit lost clothing wise and there's no-one out there to fill the gap. I used JCrew for merino jumpers, jeans, shirts, shoes, shorts, tees, swimwear etc it was an easy go to for everyday staples, work and casual clothes. I cba trawling the internet looking for clothes anymore. I enjoyed being a lazy shopper. Grin

StripesandSpaniels · 20/05/2021 16:25

Hi, I’ve lurked for a while but never posted although love reading your thread. I’ve been inspired to buy a couple of bits from it and I always like to see links.

MissKittyKitty · 20/05/2021 17:07

Hello @StripesandSpaniels don't be a lurker stay and show us your links. We need more and new posters here contributing and posting to keep it going. It needs a revival.

@SummaLuvin that's interesting what you said about the Vogue name.

SummaLuvin · 20/05/2021 17:13

@MissKittyKitty for what it's worth, I like the Vogue name, and I might be the only one who didn't twig that what MNV is for 🤦🏻‍♀️

Just for fun a couple of links of things that are sort of hideous, but I love them anyway. (won't be buying as I have no occasion to wear either)

TortoiseShed · 20/05/2021 17:43

Oh hello! I'm new round these parts Smile. Is it ok to join you?

Bit of a place mark here, and also to say I really like that first dress you just posted summa. Not that keen on the shoes they've styled them with though.

I've seen some lovely dresses (which I have no occasion to wear) from Needle and Thread recently. Will find and link!

SummaLuvin · 20/05/2021 17:50

I love that Tortoise it's the kind of dress I imagine myself wearing as I swan around my - non-existent - country manor

SummaLuvin · 20/05/2021 17:53

For newbies like me would someone mind giving me a quick rundown of what the purpose of this thread is and what is appropriate to post and not? I don't want to do the equivalent of showing up at someones classy soiree and blasting club music and ruining the vibe!

MarshaBradyo · 20/05/2021 17:54

Oh my just to say how lovely to have new posters!

Exciting really nice to see

Will come back and post properly but welcome Smile

TortoiseShed · 20/05/2021 17:59

Thanks Marsha! That's so welcoming.

Think shopafrolic posted a rundown of what she'd like to see on the thread, summa. But yes, I absolutely agree; don't want to be that person who ruins the vibe either Blush. So please feel free to step in! I am not sensitive weep Grin

Also, yes, I will join you in your hypothetical country manor. We can wear beautiful, overtly romantic dresses, frolic and look wonderful. It will be just like the Flowerbomb (Gucci?) ad Grin

RayonSunrise · 20/05/2021 18:05

I feel like I'm at a bit of a crossroads stylewise, MissKitty. I'm drawn to tailoring and a rock aesthetic, so I loved the sexy, skull-heavy Alexander McQueen era a few year ago though now that I'm in my late 40s I'm wondering how much of my current dressed-down covid style I'll end up retaining. (I am also in a bit of an M&S and Baukjen moment. And trainers! So many trainers.)

I'm a tall, broad-shouldered hourglass, so I'm drawn to fitted clothing and plain shoulderlines. You can see why this season is challenging for me! I am thinking there's some promise in the 70s revival that some of the wide leg jeans are hinting at - wide leg dark jeans, a tucked in blouse, short fitted blazer, clogs. I have the jeans and the clogs. Finding the right tops online is proving really challenging though - I think I may to go for a marathon try-on.

QueenCremant - with my figure type puffed sleeves are especially hideous on me. My nightmare top has a high neck, big puffed sleeves and no waist. (And I'm sure I've seen millions of those for sale at the moment.)

RayonSunrise · 20/05/2021 18:14

Summa, I also applaud that first dress you've posted. Sweetheart neckline, fitted waist - lovely! The cutouts on the back may be more than even my lockdown pushups can prepare me for, but I am enjoying the shape. I agree with Tortoise's comment about the shoes, though - the strappiness just doesn't seem right.

SummaLuvin · 20/05/2021 18:20

rayon and tortoise ok maybe that first dress I'm just bitter that on my very pale skin it wouldn't look so good, on a deeper skin tone however could be stunning.

Tops are what I am struggling with at the moment too! But I must admit I like a puffy sleeve - I am slightly pear shaped and do like the soft romantic fantasy look, so I find they work for me (or at least I think they do)

shopafrolic · 20/05/2021 18:23

@RayonSunrise @StripesandSpaniels @SummaLuvin @TortoiseShed
YAY!!!! Clinks glasses, a BIG welcome to MNV.

OK. So perhaps it is worth doing a brief history.

Mumsnet Vogue was started in 2012 Shock as a safe place to chat frivolous fashion. Everyone has always been welcome and there has always been a great mix of ages, styles and budgets on here. I think the key thing is that we all started to really know each others styles, and after a while could start to see what would suit some of guys better than others. I used to love going shopping and spotting something I knew someone else on here would love.
Some of us have had our colours / style done and it really helped when we were losing our style way a bit (for me I slipped into Cath Kidson territory briefly post giving birth and it was not good given that I am a Classic Dramatic and love a rock chick kind of style).

We used to post lots of links, things we had seen on shopping trips, in magazines, YouTube etc and talked all things fashion with no judgement.

The regular posters on here shop everywhere from Primark and Zara to high end designer and everything in between. The common theme is a love of style and clothes in general. And kindness - lots of kindness.

We ground to a halt as Covid hit as it seemed somehow inappropriate to post but some of us are taking tentative steps back.......

Perhaps I will ask MN to change the title back to Vogue and see how that plays out.

And for anyone who is interested FIRST EVER Mumsnet Vogue here

In terms of me, I am a SAHM with one DS and 2 dogs.
Style Icons would be Chrissie Hynde, Dua Lipa (if only I was young again), Stella Tenant, Cate Blanchett in Oceans, Ursula Corbero, Claudia Winkleman and Zoe Ball.
I am a Jewelled Winter so tend to live in black, grey, white, scarlet and fuschia, I am obsessed with red lipstick (which is useless with all this mask wearing) and liquid eyeliner.

OP posts:
shopafrolic · 20/05/2021 18:33

Oh and in terms of brands:
Designer if I could afford it YSL - one day a tux will be mine. I buy a lot of designer denim from the Outnet - Rag & Bone are good on me ATM. Local boutiques.
I love Arket and &Other Stories - some success in Cos and Whistles
High St - Zara but only online, I can't handle the stores. TK Maxx if I can trawl (haven't been in a store for well over a year though), good old John Lewis and M&S.

But lets be honest, at the moment I am living in denim, Veja or Stan Smith trainers, and basic t-shirts or crew neck sweaters. And on slob out days hoodies and SB leggings.

And finally, I am perimenopausal and have just started HRT so my waistline is expanding rapidly which I am not at all happy about.

Thanks for the welcome! I feel I’ve lost my way a bit during the lockdowns and seem to wear sweaty Betty leggings and sweatshirts as a default. I’m early 40s and just over 5 foot so am also stuck to my skinnies. I’ve not had my colours done but seem to mainly wear black, grey, stripes obviously and maybe a bit of red or pink. I’ve saved quite a lot by not going out or holidays and am considering a big purchase. I work part time from home with 2 kids at school so I’ve got into the habit of not wearing a lot of my wardrobe, not sure what I’m saving it for really. Also hopefully have a largish wedding to attend next spring so have been looking at Needle and Thread after the links above. I used to look at Instagram a lot but have kind of gone off the selling aspect of it and miss the old actual blogs and magazines.
I bought Grenson boots and a Rains jacket from following this thread and have lived in both this year.
