Hello all. I had Invisalign fitted today and would love some positive stories about how quickly I'm going to get used to them because at the moment I'm thinking this may have been a very expensive mistake!

I'm glad there's a few of us just starting the process! Mine didn't hurt during the first day but by the evening my gums and tongue were hurting quite badly and my teeth were very sensitive and it hurt to clean my teeth.

I'm on day 5 now and the gum and tongue pain has gone, teeth still a bit sensitive but not as bad and I'm slowly losing the lisp.

Had my first appt yesterday, waiting now for the next steps

mooncats · 09/01/2021 21:07

End of day one and I want to yank them out so I can sleep in peace . My gums feel irritated and itchy , they feel heavy . Without the aligners my teeth feel weird and semantics . I've got jaw ache 😭 it's so tempting to pull them off but not for the thousands I'm paying for this lol

mooncats · 09/01/2021 21:08

Semantics ?? Sensitive!

westr · 09/01/2021 21:09

That's exactly how I felt on the first night!

Glad to hear @westr things are easing. I meant to add one of the best things I bought was a set of hooks to remove them, along the lines of these: 5 Pieces Aligner Removal Tool Invisible Tooth Removal 20 Pieces Teeth Interdental Brushes Toothpick Brush Cleaners for Invisible Braces Tooth Cleaning Remove Tool https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07ZSFNZS5/ref=cmswwrcppapifabcc_SUH-Fb7M3XQK7

They're handy especially if you have weak or painted nails you don't want to damage.

hopefully getting there although the top aligner still feels really thick on my top teeth and there's a weird sucking sensation (that doesn't really make sense but not sure how to describe it!)

I'm going to order some of those hooks, thanks v much

Watching with interest - i contacted them 6 weeks ago for an appointment and they’ve been a nightmare admin wise, still not had an appointment confirmed just lots of ‘someone will get back to you’ and ‘we didn’t receive your last message please resend’. Not been impressed with them in that basis but seeing these comments makes me think I should keep plugging away.

westr · 09/01/2021 21:39

Perhaps try another dentist

@mooncats I took some ibuprofen and went to bed and was much improved today. Thing that's bothering me is the irritation where inside of lip rubbing on aligners and has cuts and sores. Couldn't get the wax today but difflam spray is helping. Hoping my mouth toughens up soon!

mooncats · 10/01/2021 08:33

@Aftertheharvest glad you're feeling better . Need to drag myself out of bed for my morning coffee now but not sure if I can have a nice long luxurious coffee anymore. The need to yank them out has subsided for now although I did get a mad gum itch last night . 23 trays too here , hopefully we will have lovely teeth by autumn .

Aftertheharvest · 10/01/2021 15:03

The tightness is much less for me and been replaced with them feeling really big in my mouth. It's amazing how quickly the time goes when you are eating meals!

westr · 10/01/2021 19:51

Yes that's how mine feel @Aftertheharvest. Apparently takes 1-2 weeks to get used to them.

How many hours are you having off? I'm doing between 21-22 hours with them in so far but I think you can drop down to 20 hours.

OP posts:
TheChosenTwo · 10/01/2021 19:59

How do you even start with this?
It’s something I’d love to do but with a crown wasn’t sure if it was possible.
I haven’t been to my dentist in coming up to 2 years now because of lockdown, was due to go to my annual appointment in March and it was cancelled, they still aren’t accepting us back Sad
Just want straight teeth!

TheChosenTwo · 10/01/2021 20:00

Meant to ask, do your dentists recommend you for this? Or refer you?

Touchitmoveit · 10/01/2021 20:04

I did Invisalign last year for a year.

The first night I cried as I kept gagging and couldn’t cope with them in my mouth. I thought I’d made a massive mistake.

I got used to them super quickly though. I found there was pain only on days 1-2 of a new set of trays. After that it eases up. I was told to put my new set on at night before bed so you sleep through the pain which was the best advice ever!

I lost weight as I couldn’t be arsed to keep taking them out and putting them back in but in the end I drank water and orange squash (weak) without taking them out.

I had attachments too which meant that it was uncomfortable to have my trays out- the beads on my teeth felt horrid. So it made me stick to the 21-22 hours in trays.

I had a few trays which had rough edges and I filed them down with nail files which made them more comfortable. I never had any ulcers!

It was the best thing I ever did and I’m so pleased with the results. I have a night retainer now and it’s comfortable and I actually miss having them on during the day!

Aftertheharvest · 10/01/2021 20:30

@westr trying to stick to the 22 hours. Not snacking etc so just off for meals. Think if we are ever allowed out again I would be a bit more relaxed but with being at home just now trying to max the time with them on.

Aftertheharvest · 10/01/2021 20:34

I went to see a specialist cosmetic dentist but I think a lot of dentists offer now. First appointment was assessment and looking at options eg traditional braces too. When I had my first appointment (September) it was the first dentist appointment I'd had in over a year because of lockdown cancellations but essentially ended up getting check up too.

I had thought about Invisalign for years and years before I went for it.

DollyTots · 10/01/2021 20:41

I regretted mine for the first week. I didn’t realise how much I grazed with eating. I was 8st10 and 12 weeks in I’m 8st4. After that first set though all was fine, no issues. The only problem I have now is that my 13 weeks is up and I’m going in for more moulds as my incisors haven’t moved despite being meticulous with them Sad

TheChosenTwo · 10/01/2021 20:53

Will you have to wear retainers for life? Shock

Touchitmoveit · 10/01/2021 22:06

@TheChosenTwo I do- but weirdly it doesn’t even bother me now and it’s part of my nightly routine!

mooncats · 11/01/2021 16:45

Thoughts so far ( day 3)

  • my mouth is sore all round still but not unbearably so
  • I'm constantly aware of the braces and they feel a lot thicker and more intrusive than expected
  • they get more sore and uncomfortable as the day progresses for some reason
  • I drool heavily and have a lisp
  • The attachments are way sharper than I expected
  • my gums are also more sensitive and sore due to the constant brushing and flossing
  • eating is uncomfortable because the attachments cut my mouth as there is no longer a shield

On a positive

  • they're way less noticeable than I thought . Even the horrid , bulky feeling , sharp attachments are barely visible when I open my mouth
  • can wear for very long as due to lockdown no eating out and social eating
Aftertheharvest · 11/01/2021 19:20

Pretty similar experience here @mooncats

Think my speech is worse than when they first went on!

Another positive for me is it is helping with my diet 🙈

westr · 11/01/2021 19:31

I think the Invisalign diet may be an added benefit!

My speech is a little bit better now (day 6) but I'm still finding the aligners very intrusive. Gums and tongue no longer hurting though and the sensitivity is much better.

I'm finding trying to keep busy as a distraction is working, not looking forward to just sitting at my laptop all day tomorrow.
