Whether that be clothing or cosmetics, I'm interested to hear your opinions. I have a few of my own thoughts on this, though I could be way off the mark.

Am in need of a boost and think I might be unwittingly ageing myself before my time.

Thanks.

@LobotheBotanist wondering about that one myself because surely if the poster was able to identify you were in your 40s it can’t be aging you that much? A particularly sneery list.

LobotheBotanist · 03/01/2021 09:23

The small cheap cats made me laugh too Grin

And I imagine their disdain at being driven slowly

But they can’t complain, as they are only cheap small cats...

Ginfordinner · 03/01/2021 09:23

I agree that this thread has turned into a "let's sneer at people who wear practical clothes" thread.

I tick all the frumpy boxes, but don't care. I think those who sneer at raincoats and frumpy boots must live in cities where it never rains, is never cold and with everything within close walking distance.

My rain jacket has loads of pockets in it and I find it quite liberating not to have to carry a handbag around with me.

I think depends on your style.
I’m 59. Long grey hair looks better on me than shorter/dyed style I had 10 years ago. I wear it up mostly.
I live in Uniqlo jeggings and tops, mostly, but recently wore a short skirt (with opaque tights), and a sequin mini (with jeggings). Looked ok.
I agree with poster above that short hair/bob’s can be ageing.
Also think cherry-red/ magenta hair dye, or any dark colour, tend to be ageing, as are over-styled/sprayed hair, overdone make up, old-fashioned face powder, and ‘smart’ clothes eg pleats (yuk), creased trousers, twin sets etc.

finkking · 03/01/2021 09:25

How can slippers look old or gin?

Cecily42 · 03/01/2021 09:25

I disagree about fringes. My fringe makes me look younger, but it has to be a good fringe, good hair cut.

finkking · 03/01/2021 09:27

I have a rain mac & love cross body bags. I also wear joggers & "ugly" clumpy sandals & boots. I'm in my 30s

Zoflorabore · 03/01/2021 09:27

I’m 43 this month, my dc are almost 18 and 10. I have had a fringe my whole life and totally rock it.

Recently at M & S and was talking to cashier about Christmas etc and she asked how old dc were as I said my dd would be so happy with her HP dumbledore chocolate wand and she couldn’t believe I had an almost 18yr old. Said she is normally on skincare and my skin is amazing blah blah and I told her I smoke like a trooper Blush I left feeling great anyway even if she was just being polite it worked!

My hair is naturally super dark, I don’t suit it lighter. I’m overweight ( and working on it ) but I like to dress younger I guess. I have the confidence to know what suits me and what doesn’t and don’t really care what anyone else thinks. It’s about comfort too having several chronic illnesses and my days in heels are long gone.

I don’t wear make up except a bit of lip stain and I get my eyebrows waxed and tinted. Growing old isn’t a crime.
My mum is 63 and looks better than she did 20 years ago.

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 03/01/2021 09:28

This is a nonsense thread. Ok, some points are definitely relevant but some posters are just making a list of things that are out of fashion / not to their taste. It's pretty clear that different things are ageing on different people. A number of 13-15 year old girls wore cold shoulder tops on a recent non- uniform day and, guess what, they still looked early teens! Not to my taste, cold probably, but not necessarily 'ageing'.

justanotherneighinparadise · 03/01/2021 09:28

On the school run I would say it’s boot cut jeans with a gap between the bottom of the jean and the top of the shoe/boot. However on a young person this would probably look retro not dated.

Wannabewriter · 03/01/2021 09:30

@Wendyhause I respectfully disagree with your explanation because the poster only mentioned gin and Prosecco so it’s obviously those two drinks which are problematic. I know she’s getting at the fact they are/were the drink of the moment in the last few years but FGS if someone orders a gin now it ages them? I despair.

If she’d just written drinking then I wouldn’t have needed any clarification.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 03/01/2021 09:31

Utter bollocks. My stunning 19 year olds drink gin and prossecco 🤷🏼‍♀️

MerryGoRoundBrain · 03/01/2021 09:31

I’m still not quite sure about the mum boot. I need clearer guidelines and more pics.
I now fear I have no understanding of style because I have at least two young and stylish girls in my team at work who wear fly boots.
I must educate myself Grin

BusterGonad · 03/01/2021 09:33

This thread is the biggest load of bollocks I've read in a long time.

finkking · 03/01/2021 09:35

Agreed, alcohol is ageing but that means more than gin or Prosecco.

JemIsMyNameNooneElseIsTheSame · 03/01/2021 09:37

Blimey, great thread to make everyone women feel even more shit about themselves. Because looking your age or god forbid 'old' is such a crime!

Nonamesavail · 03/01/2021 09:39

I love comfy clothes. I genuinely don't care if they are meant to be aging. Rather be comfy than spend my day's uncomfortable or worried someone sees me on an off day. I'm the same everyday so no one bats and eyelid.

I am 33 with a 17 Yr old and 15yr old. I don't know how that makes me look older though. I was always the youngest by FAR at parents eve and used to wish I looked older to fit in 😆

finkking · 03/01/2021 09:40

A mum boot I think is like a normal boot but very safe if that makes sense.

DidIActuallyJustSayThat · 03/01/2021 09:41

Fly boots are not ageing. F* right off. These threads are bloody depressing. Everyone is going to look old one day. You will still be a valuable human being when you do.

Agree. Who cares. I'm done trying to be anything else. I'm 33. Sometimes I might look older and sometimes younger but it doesn't change my actual age. Plus my husband doesn't give a damn what I wear. I love being comfy. I also love Joules!
hopeishere · 03/01/2021 09:41

Slippers could be ageing if they looked like the ones below.

Similarly "gin" is not ageing but alcohol in general affects your skin which could make you look older.

What instantly ages?
Cloudhopping · 03/01/2021 09:42

But does it matter if it ages you? Surely it’s what looks good on you? A lot of what people have mentioned on here don’t necessarily age someone, they’re just not particularly flattering.

My dsis in law is 52 now and has let her hair go grey-but styled into a short quiff. She definitely looks older than she did but looks fabulous.

Cloudhopping · 03/01/2021 09:43

And it’s ok not to wear ‘flattering’ things anyway!!!

finkking · 03/01/2021 09:44

I'm not sure if this thread is talking about stuff that makes you look older than you are, frumpy or not particularly fashion conscious.

If a 25 yr old had those slippers she's not going to wear them & look older.
