Whether that be clothing or cosmetics, I'm interested to hear your opinions. I have a few of my own thoughts on this, though I could be way off the mark.

Am in need of a boost and think I might be unwittingly ageing myself before my time.

Thanks.

@Fluffycloudland77 disagree about hair length. Wear the length that suits your face. My hair length goes up and down from jaw length-ish down to midway down my back and I can tell you my face is 'lifted' when its at the shorter length. I hanker after long hair, grow it and then realise there's a good reason I don't hang on to it!

pinbinpin · 08/01/2021 13:19

I'm like that with a fringe. I've always had a fringe as without one I look severe and about 10 years older.

Bluesheep8 · 08/01/2021 13:30

Disagree about having short hair. It's not aging if it suits you. Having long hair when short would suit you better is far worse imo.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/01/2021 14:49

"I can tell you my face is 'lifted' when its at the shorter length."

Me too, I think, but when it's just been cut it's sometimes a little bit too short and that just makes my head look massive. Around chin length is OK I think.

unmarkedbythat · 08/01/2021 14:49

Surely the archetypal mum boot is black, with a small heel, worn under slightly-too-short bootcut jeans.

That would sum up my mum's look but would that not make them granny boots as she's in her 60s now?

I am wearing grey Skechers boots today, I think the style is called Keepsake- the typical ugg-a-like style. Are they mum boots?

woodhill · 08/01/2021 14:54

@70isaLimitNotaTarget

I favour any shoes I can slip on with no fastenings

But your feet will not and as a person wot knows about feet (in a Professional Capacity not a weirdy foot fetish way Wink ) can I just say :

Few things will age you more than painful feet When pain shows in your face .
Maybe not now ...but in years to come .

Seriously the few extra seconds to tie some laces ...your feet will sigh in relief !

I need footware with straps, laces or zips to support my feet. Agree with what you are say
Janegrey333 · 08/01/2021 15:35

@XVmama

It’s not ageing that’s the problem.

It’s diminishing.

A few tweaks here and there and you could look so much better than you do, but you don’t. So you never discover how very much easier life can be if you look attractive and well-dressed.

Care to impart the knowledge?
Minky37 · 08/01/2021 16:04

Shit I must look 100!
I’ve committed many of these so called crimes.
I’ve always had a Bob
Just had a fringe cut in
My hair is naturally very dark and I box dye it to keep it that way. I look ridiculous with any other colour hair.
I wear bright red lipstick
I love big chunky biker or ‘bovver’ boots
I love my fleece just it’s practical but at least I’m warm
I always have a pair of slippers as I despise having cold feet
I’ve been drinking gin for 20 years, so what?
It’s a good job I don’t give a shit.

Maireas · 08/01/2021 16:55

It's the 40 year old "cut off" that some posters adhere to that is so depressing. That's young nowadays, you could easily have another 40-50 years! For gawd's sake don't act like it's all downhill from there!
Naga Munchetty has very short hair and always looks chic and stylish. Don't limit yourself because of your birthdate!

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/01/2021 17:04

I’ve obviously struck a nerve with the hair, mines chin length when I can get to a hairdresser but when I look through insta looking at what works on my age group the short hair isn’t doing a lot of women any favours.

Neither does the straggly look. It’s ok to have a messy bun in your twenties but over 40 again it doesn’t look good anymore.

I think sadly you have to spend the cash if you want to look nice as you age, it’s a losing battle but I’d rather do that than look like I’ve had a hard life.

I have started to wonder if I ever had good hair/skin or did I just spend too much money in aveda and Dermalogica?. I’m back on the aveda with a vengeance now with not having a haircut for one year today 😞 when it’s safe I’m having a cut AND an aveda deep conditioning treatment which is most unlike me. But no annoying shoulder massage, I hate that.

Maireas · 08/01/2021 17:09

I would disagree - I know older women with straggly buns who look fab, younger ones who don't. Suiting a hairstyle isn't limited by age, more taste, personal preference, colouring, face shape etc. Judi Dench with her crop looks fantastic. She is weeeeellll over 40.

Aveda shampoo is so good isn't it, no tangles that you get with other shampoos

@CeliaCanth

Mahogany bobs Three quarter length baggy linen trousers with a drawstring waist, especially in white Walking sandals Dyed black, straightened hair Court shoes with block heels Obvious face powder
My DD is 19 and drop dead gorgeous and wears three quarter length white linen trousers and looks amazing (she does wear them with Nike trainers and an oversized Ralph Lauren jumper though....)
PaulHollywoodsLowHangingFruit · 08/01/2021 17:23

I have been thinking about this thread and have reconsidered my view.

Wouldn't it be lovely if everyone wore what ever the feck the liked as an expression of themselves without constantly worrying about whether others are judging them to be worthy of bumping uglies with?

Seriously there has to to more to life then this nonsense. ..

Some stuff is not going to be to your sartorial taste - that's fine - find the stuff that makes you happy. There is enough variety out there.

unmarkedbythat · 08/01/2021 17:29

Where the fuck does this sort of thinking come from? How weird to think age dictates whether or not a hairstyle looks good.

I wear converse and I have a "boyfriend who is 46, I'm 52....

NaughtyNell · 08/01/2021 17:38

Oh and I have a fringe...

Nonamesavail · 08/01/2021 17:39

I keep thinking that so what if my clothes make me look older? I am my age so does it matter what age I look due to clothes?

NaughtyNell · 08/01/2021 17:39

Sorry with long hair shock horror

XingMing · 08/01/2021 17:46

Not quite sure whether I dare venture into the snakepit.... but here we go.

Stooped posture is ageing.

Beige suits very few people. EWM has a lot to answer for.
Ill-fitting clothes do no one any favours, and nor do uncomfortable shoes.

As long as you dress for your life, it's your business!

I am over 60, 5'5" tall and 62kg. Today, I am wearing thermals, red slightly wide-cut Hiut jeans rolled up above the ankle, over grey nubuck flatform boots, with a grey v neck sweater. No make up, and a curly grey pixie mop, with an undercut, which needs attention -- but lockdown.

I look my age, but hope I don't look as if I have lost interest in clothes. DS21 admired the jeans! Topped with a navy down-filled peacoat, tartan scarf and navy slouchy beanie and gloves to walk the dog, substituting walking boots for the flatforms. It's the current version of the tomboy clothes I've worn all my life.

@woodhill, yes. 5% cashback on topcashback too which might not work with a code but you gotta try.

StarlightLady · 08/01/2021 18:08

Oh, and so called “nude” underwear. ‘Makes you look as if your crotch is made out of cardboard!

AliceMadHatter · 08/01/2021 18:11

I have a fringe and look younger with one.
