Whether that be clothing or cosmetics, I'm interested to hear your opinions. I have a few of my own thoughts on this, though I could be way off the mark.

Am in need of a boost and think I might be unwittingly ageing myself before my time.

Thanks.

@Gwenhwyfar I made the comment about the waterproof coat rather than @Ginfordinner and meant your typical outdoorsy coat from Millets (if that shop still exists Grin).

Don't get me wrong, I wear a coat like that daily for dog walks! But I personally wouldn't wear it on a shopping trip or out to dinner.

All this is irrelevant guff though if you don't care whether you look older or not - which of course there's no reason why anyone should - but I do. For now, anyway!

Janegrey333 · 03/01/2021 15:52

There is often an emphasis on ‘showing your figure’ on here, especially for more formal occasions. It’s perfectly possible to look stylish (even youthful!) in styles that aren’t traditionally flattering.

Yes! This party dress by Cos is lovely and not at all clingy.

@PyongyangKipperbang what you say you wear in your previous post is not how most hound 20 somethings dress. Do you will be fine

IfNotNow12 · 03/01/2021 15:52

Old husbands. The balding paunchy chap walking beside you instantly ages you. Or, maybe it's just husbands in general

They were examples, I wear lots of things. Like a mini dress that belonged to my 19 year old daughter until she put weight on and gave it to me!

In fact I was going out for lunch with the same daughter during the break from lockdown and had to change as we were wearing almost identical outfits! She didnt care and neither did I!

PreRaphaeliteMotherhood · 03/01/2021 15:57

I’m 28...
I wear a lot of fleeces
Wear exclusively ‘sensible’ shoes (DM Chelsea Boots, Trainers, Joules Wellibobs, or hiking boots)
Pretty much exclusively wear my raincoat

I’m basically ancient 🙄

PyongyangKipperbang · 03/01/2021 15:57

Oh and I am fine whatever I wear thank you, luckily I dont need anyones approval but my own.

NiceGerbil · 03/01/2021 15:59

Husbands Grin

I got round that by having a younger spouse. How I managed to attract him when I know nothing and care nothing for 'the rules' is a mystifying question Grin

Janegrey333 · 03/01/2021 15:59
@Ariesthelamb - I think the problem with khol is the same "wearing it because I always have worn it" mindset - if you suit it, wear it, but for a lot of white woman, their skin tone changes with the lighter (grey) hair and the dark colours round the eye no longer suit them - same as the black mascara comment below - its wearing the colour you've always worn even if your skin has lightened so it doesn't suit.
Best not to wear mascara at all on the bottom lashes.

I don’t think many of the people judging on this thread have consulted a fashion publication for some time, as many of the things they dis are actually de rigeur at the moment!
Joggers
Fleece
Crossbody bags
White hair
And bootcut jeans are in fashion.

Perhaps these judgy individuals should check these things out before they post.

shelvira · 03/01/2021 16:03

Coarse hair, flat arse, dropped knockers and a sour expression

This is me also. Grin I'm 54. I try to make the coarse hair a bit more shiny with various oils. The flat arse I hide. I do wear leggings but always with a short jersey skirt or something to cover up said flat arse. I try to buy 'sculpting' jeans.... The dropped knockers I deal with by wearing a good strong bra, and the sour expression I am aware of enough to turn the corners of my mouth up if I'm in danger of appearing in a photograph!

I have long hair. It's dark brown - dyed. I once heard someone refer to the colour that lots of middle-aged women start fading into as 'menopausal blonde' so I have started to follow a few women on instagram who had dark hair and have grown it out to white. Am very much considering going down that route, but keeping it long. I don't want to fade to blonde. I'll be dark or white.

Indeed

Both are worn by my teenager, and my MIL (actually MIL doesn't wear joggers and teen doesn't have white hair) but they wear them in a different way.

I also wear these things, but more in the way DD does, much to her satisfaction. Apparently I'm quite youthful looking according to her.

PimlicoJo · 03/01/2021 16:05

I'm in my 50s and started out despairing at this thread but am now laughing out loud. Nicegerbil's list nailed it.

I'm now off to have a nice Sunday afternoon g&t. Luckily on a winter January afternoon in Tier 4 there's no-one other than the old fella (note to self, check if he looks 10 years older as that's aging) to see how ancient I look!

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 03/01/2021 16:07

Did you step out from the editorial team at The Lady @Madbengalmum
consulted a fashion publication One consults?
actually de rigeur at the moment! who even says that?
Just you keep rocking your fleece and consulting fashion publications

NiceGerbil · 03/01/2021 16:10

I totally read that other post as dropped knickers

And assumed it was a joke Grin

Madbengalmum · 03/01/2021 16:11

HeelsHandbag Im sure you didn’t mean to be so rude?
Was there something wrong with my turn of speech or didn’t you understand it?

KnitFastDieWarm · 03/01/2021 16:12

ironically (considering some of the replies on this thread), the most outdated and ageing thing is the attitude that clothes or makeup need to be ‘appropriate’, ‘flattering’ or ‘hide flaws’ (and that includes hiding your age). The trend now, thank goodness, is very much geared towards body positivity and wearing what the hell you want.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 03/01/2021 16:18

Yes I intended my post as it was written, if that’s what you’re asking
Your phraseology and observation was frankly bizarre

Gwenhwyfar · 03/01/2021 16:21

@Soutiner

Asking to speak to the manager.
Ah, but this is one of the rare situations where the older you look the better.
MaelyssQ · 03/01/2021 16:26

Taking the piss out of mum boots and having a mum tum on a site called Mumsnet is ironic.

People who worry about what they wear because other people might look askance at them, need to work on their self-esteem. Confidence and happiness shine through regardless if whether one is wearing a tatty pair of leggings and raincoat or a faux leather boilersuit and biker boots.

I am 60 and I wear what the fuck I like. If I wanted a cauliflower perm and beige slacks I'd bloody well have them - and I'd look awesome Wink

I care too and I'm worse than OP because I'd actually like to look a bit younger.
I still have to be practical though so I do wear waterproof and wam coats (puffers) to the shops or to dinner.
I suspect there's a difference between walkers and drivers here. I have to dress practically just to get around.

Madbengalmum · 03/01/2021 16:30

HeelsHandbags, perhaps you need to take things a little less seriously if my phraseology is causing so much concern. I am not quite sure why you felt it appropriate to launch such a tirade, but hey each to his own.

That's fair enough, but personally I do want to wear clothes that are flattering to the extent that is possible and practical so I'm interested in the tips in Style & Beauty.

I’m not concerned, nor do I need to take things easy
