If offered one for a Christmas present? Healthy budget.

Everyday watch

@AgeLikeWine
The Submariner is a great watch, congratulations on it. What Charlize Theron wears is a Rolex Deep Sea Sea Dweller, known as the "James Cameron". It's a 44mm case, 18mm thick & weighs half a pound! It's a lot of watch!

Justonedayatatime11 · 10/12/2020 22:50

DH has just bought me this for Christmas. I had a choice between this and a Cartier Ballon Bleu but when I tried them on there was no contest. Very excitedly counting down the days until I can wear it!

@LightDrizzle your engagement ring is amazing!!!

I'd go for small two tone ladies Rolex with no diamonds!

AgeLikeWine · 10/12/2020 23:33

@ChinookPilotsGoVertical Thanks for the info. In that case, Charlize’s watch is definitely bigger & heavier than mine. I’m definitely not cool enough to wear one of those!

User556 · 11/12/2020 00:46

If I’m spending that much I personally don’t like things that so many other people have

But definitely go for a Swiss make

Patek Phillipe are nice but I have a Longines that I always get compliments on

mrscampbellblackagain · 11/12/2020 07:39

I have a cartier francaise but got a patek a couple of years ago which I love but the waiting lists are long and they are £££. It is extremely understated which I like.

PegasusReturns · 11/12/2020 07:51

My Rolex is a day date 40 but the oyster perpetual steel is very similar and significantly less so might be an option depending on budget.

PresentingPercy · 11/12/2020 08:03

PP and Longines are not quite the same though are they?

couldhavegonethen · 11/12/2020 08:08

I have a Rolex Datejust ( no diamonds) and have just got an IWC Portifino in green. Absolutely love it! Take a look.

ImRealHonest · 11/12/2020 08:14

I have the Cartier tank, was my 30th present.

I also have a vintage IWC that I love, and a small men’s AP (34mm face)

I don’t like diamonds, chronographs, any fuss. I haven’t yet found a Rolex I like.

I like the simplicity of baume and mercier too

hellymissy · 11/12/2020 08:37

Audermars piguet Royal Oak.

I'm desperate for one!

ChinookPilotsGoVertical · 11/12/2020 08:40

@AgeLikeWine, it's a big piece but I bet you are cool enough to carry it off! It's like the Sub's big sibling. I've had one for 5 months and really love the look, especially the dial that changes from blue to black to represent the depth of the ocean. I also really like the Omega Speedmaster and the Tag Heuer Monaco, both of which come in 2 case sizes to suit a variety of wrists.

DemolitionWoman · 11/12/2020 08:44

I wouldn't choose one without first trying them on. For years I lusted after an Omega Constellation, finally in a position to buy one but it didn't actually suit my wrist. I went for a Seamaster instead.

dottyaboutstripes · 11/12/2020 09:16

I have a Rolex oyster perpetual lady datejust. It's beautiful and I love the simplicity of it - no bling etc.

Two points to make - firstly you definitely need to try on. I thought I wanted a big watch but realised that smaller was so much better on me (I'm petite). Secondly, if it's for Christmas you might find that what you want won't be available in time, so crack on!

LightDrizzle · 11/12/2020 12:54

I second trying them on. Sometimes something you’ve lusted after just doesn’t work on you, or something unexpected looks perfect.

definitely! this is not an online shopping type purchase!

Bellsandwhistle · 11/12/2020 22:16

Guys you are all great so much to research here. Yes going to try on next week so will see what suits best. Thought I wanted small but just dug out my 20 year old longines which I adore but haven’t worn since getting fitness watches a few years ago and it looks tiny now. Want something a little bigger but not too big as small wrists.

I had such a lovely time choosing my watch a few years ago. I ended up with the Cartier Tank Francaise which I adore. They price matched the jewellers next door then gave a further discount to clinch the sale! Also got a complimentary bottle of champagne. 🍾🥂😘

Bellsandwhistle · 12/12/2020 15:14

Lol I wondered if I’d get a glass of something but expect not with Covid.

Cartier Ballon Bleu. I absolutely adore mine. It’s the most elegant watch. I tried on a few and this on suited me the best.

Bellsandwhistle · 12/12/2020 20:16

Ballon bleu looks fab but I think I’m a bit ocd and not sure re asymmetric design....

Have you looked at Ebel?

I have a square shaped face one similar to the Cartier ones above.

Bought about 10 years ago and I still love it. The back of the face is slightly curved so it sits well on your wrist and is incredibly comfy to wear.
