How often do you brush your hair in a day?

I have long hair (down to my lower back) and yesterday I realised that until going to bed last night, I had only brushed it once, while getting dressed (I WFH) in the morning. Hair of course gets dirty, like everything else, and I usually brush it a few times a day (mostly when I go for a pee) as that also makes it more presentable if I need to pop out.

So that got me wondering what others do - how often do you brush your hair? And is it long or short?

Twice a week before I wash it. It’s very thick, mid back, wavy. I slept with it up so it doesn’t get tangled at night. It puffs up when I brush it so I run my fingers through it and leave it be.

AlrightTreacle · 21/11/2020 12:26

Once in the morning, then up into a bun, ponytail, French braid or side braid. Don't think I've worn it down since March Shock

jojomolo · 21/11/2020 12:33

I don't brush my hair routinely. It never gets tangled. It's just completely straight and thick and also very static so brushing makes it big. I have a hot air dryer brush thing (the Revlon one) that I use instead of a hair dryer in an effort to reduce the power ballad look that comes over me when I'm not vigilant.

Scarby9 · 21/11/2020 12:45

Probably twice on a normal day in normal times.
When I get up and when I arrive at work - just a tidy up then because I tend to let it dry from the shower on the drive in.
I find I am giving at least the fringe and the front additional quick combs regularly through the day now - seeing yourself on Zoom accentuates the flaws!

TheDetectiveBadge · 21/11/2020 12:50

Once. If I'm leaving the house that is. If not I just run my fingers through it and leave it at that.

SuperbGorgonzola · 21/11/2020 13:00

I really avoid brushing my hair as it makes it quite frizzy. I only really do it right before I wash it, and if I'm straightening it. The rest of the time I try to get by with finger combing. It's mostly in a bun anyway.

I know that I need to get it cut more often and would like to try olaplex but I can't afford it right now.

MadameMinimes · 21/11/2020 13:05

I wear my hair wavy/curly and never brush it. It occasionally gets a wide tooth comb put through it whilst wet but if I brushed it I’d break up all of my curl clumps and end up with a frizzy mess.

YoureBreakingMyHeartCecilia · 21/11/2020 13:09

I’ve not brushed my hair for 25 years (I’m not joking).

I have the kind of semi-curly, semi-wavy, straight ish in parts prone-to-terrible-frizz hair that just TURNS INTO A GIANT BUSH if a brush comes anywhere near it. My mum used to nag me to ‘brush your hair!’ in my teens which is why in all photos from that period I look like I’m wearing Captain Caveman on my head.

I’d like to say I comb it when wet which wouldn’t do any harm but actually I don’t. I comb through when wet with just my fingers.

Honestly, brushed hair is NOT a good look on me. I see the difference when eg I brush my daughter’s hair so I’m not anti-brushing at all. On me, however, it’s the difference between looking fine and looking plain weird.

Does anyone else have this kind of hair?!?

ShowOfHands · 21/11/2020 13:10

Never.

I wash it once a week, towel dry, run my fingers through it and done. It's a long bob atm but I do the same whether it's long or short.

BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 21/11/2020 13:14

I guess it's a legacy from when I was little - my mum was always saying that you should brush your hair multiple times a day (it does only take seconds) because it looks less messy. I agree (my hair has no real shape so it can look messy if left to its own devices) but maybe it's not necessary. As for the cleaning thing, that's a good point. But I do feel more put together after brushing my hair. I'll try and only brush it when I get up and before going to bed and see how that feels. It's incredible how I'm pushing 50 and I still do some stuff on autopilot that I learnt as a kid. Embarrassing, really...

If I've let it dry curly, not at all. If I've dried it straight, depends on whether it's up- in which case only before bed- or down. It tangles and frizzes easily so I brush it every few hours then.

EyeDrops · 21/11/2020 13:18

Two or three times a day for me. Basically before I go out or see anyone.

My hair is past my shoulders, very thick(or fine but lots of it), not quite straight but not quite wavy, and tangles the second anyone looks at it. Looks like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards within minutes. Looks a mess if I try and put it up, too.

It looks lovely when brushed - all thick and glossy. I just wish it would stay like that!

insancerre · 21/11/2020 13:22

I have very short hair and I don’t really brush it
Just move it around a bit with my fingers

TotalBitch · 21/11/2020 13:24

I truly wish I suited super short hair! I always think it looks amazing and so easy to deal with. One day, I might shave mine off! But not yet. Need to lose a few stone or I'll look like Matt Lucas (no offense to him).

ShopTattsyrup · 21/11/2020 13:57

Very curly shoulder length hair - brush it when I wash it. So every 3ish days. If I dry brush I'd look like I'd been plugged into the mains!!!

bengalcat · 21/11/2020 13:59

I have long hair and brush it once in the morning but it is tied up at work in the day so doesn’t get tangled .

CremeEggThief · 21/11/2020 13:59

Never. Curly hair combed when wet whenever it's been washed, so between once daily and every three days.

CremeEggThief · 21/11/2020 14:02

Mine is a bit longer than it really is. It looks about collar bone length.

PolarnOPirate · 21/11/2020 14:06

Once if that! That’s not good though as my hair is long and thick and tends to mat at the nape of the neck! Obviously I rarely leave it to get into that state. Wish I had curls, I brush my boys’ curly hair once in a blue moon if they’ve got a tangle from thrashing around in their sleep!

BiBabbles · 21/11/2020 14:29

ThisMustBeMyDream My hair sounds like yours. What spray do you use?

If I'm just at home and I brush when I get up into a ponytail and just before going to bed, by the evening, my hair looks like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards even if I've not anything more strenuous than the laundry. No idea how or why, the strands seems to try to go for a wander with and around each other while I'm sitting around. I love a good hat because the slightest breeze makes my hair go wild even in a ponytail (nightmare if I try to leave it down when going out).

gindinner · 21/11/2020 14:47

Only when I have conditioner in it. Otherwise I just get frizz

ThisMustBeMyDream · 21/11/2020 17:42

@BiBabbles I've tried loads of different ones. Salon sprays, budget ones. Makes no difference! Sad

Singinghollybob · 21/11/2020 20:14

Once in the morning and when I'm drying it after having washed it.

Pipandmum · 21/11/2020 20:20

After shower. Maybe once more when leaving the house. It's thick and wavy and looks ok if I just run my fingers through it if I forget.

RunningFromInsanity · 21/11/2020 20:23

Twice, once in the morning, once before bed.
Occasionally I’ll brush it in between if it looks tangled/frizzy etc.
I have long naturally very straight hair.
