Jeggings and showing off your ankles at 40!!!

Please talk to me about the latest trend with Jeggings being cut to show your ankles?

I've been wearing stretchy jeggings for years, mainly Gap. I've just ordered a couple of new pairs after my 2 year old pairs have worn. The new ones are shorter, so stopping above rather than below my ankle bone. This wasn't clear on the description, but when I spoke to Gap chat last night, they said they've changed the jegging style to be like this.

Looking at some other websites, it looks like this must be the new style. I suppose so 'cooler than me' women can wear jeggings with trainers/trainer liner socks, rather than ankle socks.

I've just turned 40 and I guess my main thoughts are:

  • Am I too old for showing my ankles?
  • Will my ankles get cold?
  • Doesn't it look like I've shrunk them in the wash?!
Grin

I'd appreciate some style advice from those in the know about if I should embrace this new slightly shorter style, or try to find full length jeggings from somewhere if they exist. I'm not interested in skinny jeans as I prefer the feel of them being super tight all down my leg.

Note, I'm 5' 3" with longish legs for my height, so usually a 26R fits me perfectly at full length.

Either way, I wasn't particularly bothered with the quality of the GAP ones, so will look elsewhere. Any recommendations for a pair under £50. My SIL has recommended River Island Molly leggings for starters.

Too old for showing your ankles? Confused

BusySittingDown · 10/11/2020 14:22

Of course you're too old for showing ankles! Put them away!

🤣

Sorry OP, I've never heard anything so hilarious. No, you're not too old at any age to show your ankles.

grey12 · 10/11/2020 14:23

Unless you have problems with your ankles, I don't see the issue Hmm capri pants have been a thing for many decades and ladies all ages wear them

Bluntness100 · 10/11/2020 14:24

Yes, there is a rule one must not show ones ankles over the age of 21 or when one is married. Depending on what comes first

Hmm
BusySittingDown · 10/11/2020 14:24

Btw, I'm same height as you and I'm currently wearing some Puma training leggings that show my ankles (alert the church elders).

I'm 37 so not much of an age difference.

VinylDetective · 10/11/2020 14:25

I’m 37 years older than you and I show my ankles, they’re one of the few bits of me that time hasn’t changed.

WouldBeGood · 10/11/2020 14:26

Dd shouts at me if I don’t have an ankle gap! I’m 50 😃

Bluntness100 · 10/11/2020 14:27

I’m fifty one. I wear shorts in the summer.

Maybe I give folks the vapours.

And, hush, whisper it, I’ve seen women much older in skirts...😱

Deltoids1 · 10/11/2020 14:28

You're not too old but at this time of year I don't like a cold ankle.

I've been deeply immersed in time jump science in Star Trek Discovery. Have I landed in the 17th century???

Ankles.

Too. Old. To. Show. Ankles.

Bluntness100 · 10/11/2020 14:30

Am I too old for showing my ankles?

Wut.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 10/11/2020 14:32

It was a joke, yes?

Something to snigger at on Reddit?

Please let this be so.

museumum · 10/11/2020 14:33

Yes your ankles will get cold - I always wear boots at this time of year fir this reason.

JaneJeffer · 10/11/2020 14:33

Showing your ankles! Fetch me my smelling salts!

Freshprincess · 10/11/2020 14:35

I’m 5 ‘11. I’ve been rocking this look since I was 15, only then it was called half mast and was to be ridiculed.

Bloody delighted That I’m now fashionable at the grand old age of 48.

It isnt Victorian times OP People wont faint if you show a glimpse of ankle fans self and reaches for smelling salts Ive just been for a run, then cycle wearing cropped running leggings. Im 51 It wouldnt even enter my head that this was an issue.
Jaxhog · 10/11/2020 14:36

If you've nice ankles why not? I'm 20 years older and still show mine!

Aintnosunshinewhenimgone · 10/11/2020 14:38

I've just got some river island molly ones and they are awesome. Bit long on me, I'm 5.3 but with standard legs. I do like an ankle gap so tend to roll but I think the Molly's would be long enough not to leave a gap. Super comfy but if its proper tightness you are after id maybe size down as I'm a 10 but they arent tight think I'd have preferred an 8

Joditaylorfan · 10/11/2020 14:40

But what if you don't want to "show your ankles"? Cold at this time of year, imho looks ridiculous with trainers or shoes and socks. Fine in summer with sandals.

Are there any jeggings out there that are longer?

ritzbiscuits · 10/11/2020 14:40

Oh dear....it seems like I've given everyone a snigger! Well, at least it's cheered us up in the middle of a work day! God, this is going to end up on trending at this rate Blush

Ok, I'm fine about showing my ankles, I guess more so wearing jeans that are shorter than I'm used to! That is all!

So, bringing it back on topic, can anyone recommend some good Jeggings to order?

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 10/11/2020 14:42

Nope. You don’t get away that easy op.

We still need to discuss the ankle viewing a little longer. Sorry. 😃

SingleHandSue · 10/11/2020 14:43

I love an ankle gap. Skinny or straight jeans and trousers look so much better with a gap. Skinny jeans all the way down to the shoes/trainers looks awful.

(Or you could be like my MIL who is firmly stuck believing boot cuts almost touching the ground worn with heavy black block heeled shoes is a classic look. It’s such a shame as she has a lovely figure and colouring and would look amazing in something more up to date)

ritzbiscuits · 10/11/2020 14:44

@Aintnosunshinewhenimgone thanks for the recommendation. I'll definitely order some of those to try in an 8 and 10 as I'm between sizes.

I think part of the reason for my question is that the GAP ones look a bit frumpy with the shorter length. Hoping the overall look will look much better with some more trendy jeggings.
