Jeggings and showing off your ankles at 40!!!

Please talk to me about the latest trend with Jeggings being cut to show your ankles?

I've been wearing stretchy jeggings for years, mainly Gap. I've just ordered a couple of new pairs after my 2 year old pairs have worn. The new ones are shorter, so stopping above rather than below my ankle bone. This wasn't clear on the description, but when I spoke to Gap chat last night, they said they've changed the jegging style to be like this.

Looking at some other websites, it looks like this must be the new style. I suppose so 'cooler than me' women can wear jeggings with trainers/trainer liner socks, rather than ankle socks.

I've just turned 40 and I guess my main thoughts are:

  • Am I too old for showing my ankles?
  • Will my ankles get cold?
  • Doesn't it look like I've shrunk them in the wash?!
Grin

I'd appreciate some style advice from those in the know about if I should embrace this new slightly shorter style, or try to find full length jeggings from somewhere if they exist. I'm not interested in skinny jeans as I prefer the feel of them being super tight all down my leg.

Note, I'm 5' 3" with longish legs for my height, so usually a 26R fits me perfectly at full length.

Either way, I wasn't particularly bothered with the quality of the GAP ones, so will look elsewhere. Any recommendations for a pair under £50. My SIL has recommended River Island Molly leggings for starters.

My 48 year old ankles. You'd never guess, its the rest of me that needs covered up Grin.

I think you can wear them short if you already have fairly long legs, otherwise it can make you look shorter.

Chocolateteabag · 10/11/2020 14:49

Feels like it's time to leave this useful Guide here Grin

Chocolateteabag · 10/11/2020 14:51

Sorry OP - I couldn't resist it!

Bluntness100 · 10/11/2020 14:57

Good lord mini. Blatant ankle exposure there you hussy.

Sorry op, but yup 😂

Hardbackwriter · 10/11/2020 15:01

I agree that there's no age limit on ankles, but I absolutely hate this trend and am waiting hopefully for it to end! It's so dominant that I've genuinely struggled to find jeans or (non-work) trousers that aren't cropped. I think it's a residual fear from being mocked for my trousers being too short as a teenager (I'm 5'10) but I hate the way it looks on me and I like my ankles to be warm! It really limits shoe choice, especially in winter, too. And I think it makes everyone look wider than they do in full-length trousers.

SlothMama · 10/11/2020 15:01

Do you become a victorian over the age of 40? Wear what you want.

BoulangerieBabs · 10/11/2020 15:06

Just eyeing my bare ankles poking out from underneath my ankle skimming jeggings.

doctorhamster · 10/11/2020 15:06

Anyone of any age can show their ankles op. I do think the ankle gap looks slightly daft in the middle of winter though...it's more of a spring/summer thing surely?

MadCatLady71 · 10/11/2020 15:08

Most of my jeans are now cut to just above the ankle. I’m 49, and so far nobody has made a formal complaint or barred me from their premises. In the dead of winter, I just wear chunky wool socks and biker boots with them to eliminate the risk of chilly ankles.

Wroxie · 10/11/2020 15:11

Trousers have been running short for a few years now, which I love - I have slim ankles and I love shoes and cute socks (as in, great colours and patterns, not socks that look like kittens or any of that nonsense). I'll be sad when the pendulum swings the other way. In 20 years I'll probably still be wearing short pegged trousers (not jeggings - ugh) and will be the 2040 equivalent of the women still wearing boot cut jeans and 'smart boots' today.

GrimDamnFanjo · 10/11/2020 15:13

I'm short and nothing cropped ever shows my ankles :(

movingonup20 · 10/11/2020 15:14

I've had to start buying long for that reason for all jeans. There's been a big change in sizing - I tried 32r in a charity shop and they drowned me length wise but were too tight (I have 30r on today same brand)

OccultGnuAsWell · 10/11/2020 15:18

Hardbackwriter - I sat up in recognition when you wrote that. 5'10 here and experienced that same derision when the hemline on my trousers skimmed my anklebones.

Can't bring myself to try a capri pant to this day and I'm in my fifties.

However OP I think you should show your ankles with pride.

SingleHandSue · 10/11/2020 15:22

Another brazen hussy of 40 here.

Please excuse the dirty boots, I took a short cut home 🙈

Hardbackwriter · 10/11/2020 15:23

@OccultGnuAsWell it's obviously some sort of trauma! I remember there was a girl who was bullying a friend of mine and so her and her friends sort of bullied me by proxy, and called me 'the lanky bitch' and 'half mast'. Looking back these do not seem like terrible insults - and what I'd give to still be a 'lanky' size 8 now! - but at the time I was devastated and refused to wear my school trousers (which I'd begged my mum for because they were considered cooler than a skirt because the skirt came from the school uniform shop whereas you could buy any blue trousers, even from - gasp! - Topshop).

Reading that back, it might be time for me to get over it!

Changedmyname26 · 10/11/2020 15:29

Ankle grazers are very popular amongst all age ranges! New Look and Dorothy Perkins have a good selection. If you don't want your ankles out, just go for a long leg instead of regular. But i promise, you wont burst into flames if you dare to flash a little ankle!

picklemewalnuts · 10/11/2020 15:32

So what do we do about cold bare ankles peeking out? Just ignore them? Rise above the chilliness?

mistermagpie · 10/11/2020 15:38

Bloody hell OP, I'm 40 and go about in shorts for most of the summer. Too old for showing off your ankles?!?!

Don't be silly.

Mochudubh · 10/11/2020 15:41

YABU - £50 for a pair of jeggings? Get thee to Matalan or George, you'll get 4 pairs for that.

I'm 52 and currently wearing jeggings with minion socks and hi-tops and I don't care. I spent most of the last 6 months in shorts having only pulled on long trousers in the last week or so.

lindyloo57 · 10/11/2020 15:54

@singleHandsue I have seen trinny wear her bootcut jeans like your MIL, so maybe she is up to date.

You've cheered me right up OP Grin

ritzbiscuits · 10/11/2020 20:58

Thanks again for all your comments! Grin

I'm going to take another look at ankle showing jeggings and will report back with an update. You might even get a pic of said ankles if you're lucky! Smile

i hate 'ankle grazers'. They 'fashion', but they look nasty on me. Most high street pants are cut to a 29 or 30 inch inseam, but my legs are 31, so an ankle grazer on me... they look like 'masties'. My top tip? Buy a 'long'. Then they fit.
