Jeggings and showing off your ankles at 40!!!

Please talk to me about the latest trend with Jeggings being cut to show your ankles?

I've been wearing stretchy jeggings for years, mainly Gap. I've just ordered a couple of new pairs after my 2 year old pairs have worn. The new ones are shorter, so stopping above rather than below my ankle bone. This wasn't clear on the description, but when I spoke to Gap chat last night, they said they've changed the jegging style to be like this.

Looking at some other websites, it looks like this must be the new style. I suppose so 'cooler than me' women can wear jeggings with trainers/trainer liner socks, rather than ankle socks.

I've just turned 40 and I guess my main thoughts are:

  • Am I too old for showing my ankles?
  • Will my ankles get cold?
  • Doesn't it look like I've shrunk them in the wash?!
Grin

I'd appreciate some style advice from those in the know about if I should embrace this new slightly shorter style, or try to find full length jeggings from somewhere if they exist. I'm not interested in skinny jeans as I prefer the feel of them being super tight all down my leg.

Note, I'm 5' 3" with longish legs for my height, so usually a 26R fits me perfectly at full length.

Either way, I wasn't particularly bothered with the quality of the GAP ones, so will look elsewhere. Any recommendations for a pair under £50. My SIL has recommended River Island Molly leggings for starters.

I cover up the table legs here in case DP gets “ideas”

Blondiney · 11/11/2020 09:38

This is my favourite thread Grin

I recommend Uniqlo Leggings Trousers. They give the model's height in the photo so you can see how long the fit is, although I think all the models have long legs relative to their height because the trousers are always a little bit longer on me even though I'm around the same height as the models.

@grey12

Unless you have problems with your ankles, I don't see the issue Hmm capri pants have been a thing for many decades and ladies all ages wear them
Even if OP did have a problem with her ankles, that doesn't mean they should be hidden away.

In the nicest possible way, OP, you are massively overthinking this. Of course you can show your ankles at 40! The rules don't change as you hit 40, or any age for that matter

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 11/11/2020 15:28

@Bluntness100

Yes, there is a rule one must not show ones ankles over the age of 21 or when one is married. Depending on what comes first

Hmm

There's an awful perception on MN at the mo which is that when one hits 40 one is old and wizened so best not leave the house ! It's a bit depressing!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 11/11/2020 15:30

@MiniTheMinx

My 48 year old ankles. You'd never guess, its the rest of me that needs covered up Grin.

I think you can wear them short if you already have fairly long legs, otherwise it can make you look shorter.

Ooh mini have you used ribbon for laces?

Awesome Old Ankles btw.

WitsEnding · 11/11/2020 15:33

I’m happy to get my ankles out in summer, in winter I wear colourful socks and boots to cover the gap.

I am old enough to remember leg warmers being The Thing, so not embarrassed.

Nothing involving jeggings is a latest trend

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 11/11/2020 16:44

Do what you want. There is no age limit; it's invented.

Ladytron11 · 11/11/2020 19:17

I’m 51, 5’8”, long legged & recently bought M&S jeggings which I like. DH measured my legs per the size chart & I bought Regular size. These display my ankle, fine for wearing trainers/flatties. I kept them & bought another colour Long length. Better for wearing ankle boots. HTH

I'm going to look on Damart for some lounge wear Grin

But that's no good if - like me - you always need longer length so they will still be cropped on you!

It depends if you are hoping to send Victorian gentlemen into a swoon?

Nackajory · 12/11/2020 14:34

I'm late 40s, my ankles are about the only bit of me I want to show these days Grin

MrsAvocet · 12/11/2020 14:50

I know what you mean OP. I don't think I am too old to show my ankles but I do have nasty scarring on one of mine that I prefer to be covered, though I'm not that bothered in summer. But in winter I like pretty much all of me covered! If my feet and ankles are cold, I'm cold.
I'm only 5ft so have been buying regular leg length from M&S instead of short to get round the problem. It seems like an odd trend for winter to me.

ritzbiscuits · 12/11/2020 16:23

@damnthatanxiety Grin haha!

What 'cut' is most trendy now? I literally have no clue, just like my jeans tight!

OP posts:
damnthatanxiety · 12/11/2020 16:31

Honestly? wear whatever you like. If you like skinnies, wear skinnies. Jeggings are a bit tricky as they tend to be thinner fabric and a bit legging looking but if you like them, you wear them! What is in? Mom jeans, high waisted wide leg jeans, straight leg slightly short jeans. Mostly black and pale denim

Terralee · 12/11/2020 17:00

Haha omg too old to show ankles at 40?? I've been showing mine for ages, can get a bit chilly but that's fashion.

Btw in the Victorian times they covered up piano legs with cloth in case men became turned on by seeing something that resembled an ankle... seriously!!

ritzbiscuits · 13/11/2020 12:08

UPDATE - I have decided to embrace my ankles, new jeans on!

Even if you have problems with your ankles, whip them out anyway. Life is too short to worry about offending other people with our bodies Smile
HomeSliceKnowsBest · 13/11/2020 20:16

Oh I do say! A 40 year old ankle blushes

Bejazzled · 14/11/2020 00:06

What a ell turned ankle!!

Anyway, don’t but the TU legging trousers, they are beyond ridiculous - not even ankle gaping, more peddle pushers! (One from olden times)

Getoutofbed25 · 14/11/2020 00:11

Tesco jeggings £12.50......I love them!
