How do you store and display beautiful handbags?!

Over the last 7 years I’ve got hold of about 7 rather lovely handbags. I have enough now. I store them with a few other general bags in an ottoman, but they are so nice I would like to display them as well as store. Although I know that’s not always good for them Confused. I don’t want to come across as all Real Housewives - I’m not like that at all - but any ideas?! Should I just put up some kind of shelf or buy an IKEA kallax (I could paint it some nice colour too.). Will they get dirty dusty 😞? OTOH I like to see them sometimes

They will get very dusty and dirty on a shelf. You could have a glass display table or glass fronted unit rather than have them sat on a shelf.

I have two billy bookcases with glass doors - so no dust issues

The ladies...

Dust bag and box, always. They will deteriorate otherwise.

Yes. And keep them stuffed with tissue paper to keep the shape.

I have the boxes all piled up in the corner of my room and actually it looks quite chic!

HappyGirlNow · 04/11/2020 23:34

I have lots of designer bags, some still in their boxes, and some hanging from a coat stand I bought especially, either hanging from their own straps or in dust bags and hanging in them..

I'm fascinated...... who are you ladies displaying them to ?

Is this display in your bedroom (where I would keep bags, along with my clothes) in which case who are they being displayed to ?
Or are you actually displaying them (or thinking of displaying them) in a living room ?

HappyGirlNow · 04/11/2020 23:49

I don’t consider myself displaying my bags, it’s a method of storage.. I keep mine in a spare bedroom.. I doubt anyone has them in a living room! 💁🏻‍♀️

throwaway10000 · 04/11/2020 23:49

@BackforGood I could imagine this in a walk-in wardrobe set up?

BackforGood · 04/11/2020 23:53

I'm just going - from the op "I would like to display them"

'Display' = "put out for people to see"

as demonstrated by the next two posters' replies

I honestly think displaying them is quite naff, ditto shoes
I will highlight I also hate ornaments and so this may be a hangover
I keep them stuffed and in dust bags

SpeckledyHen · 05/11/2020 06:35

Mine are stored in a glass fronted IKEA cabinet in my spare room .

Agree with all this!
Sonicthehedgehogg · 05/11/2020 07:48

My friend's mother doesn't display hers per se... but has always recommended a copy of at least one Vogue inside to 'maintain shape'. Grin

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/11/2020 08:00

Mine are in my upstairs hallway, so only really seen by us anyway. I don't have space in my wardrobe for them so they needed a shelving unit, and if I see things I'm more likely to wear them. Plus I like the colours...and I'd seen the red bookcases and liked those so it kind of worked for me.

Don't really give a fuck if it's naff.

lentilsforlunch · 05/11/2020 08:05

I love this thread it has really cheered me up after an hour of dooms rolling news. I don't have lots of lovely handbags but I think the pic of the glass fronted cabinet is really cheery.
Why the snobbery?
No one moans if you put your books in a glass fronted cabinet instead of a box under a bed and no one asks who you are displaying them for.

whynotwhen · 05/11/2020 08:58

Being able to see them is definitely a plus. Because I do tend to forget what bags I have and will only use the same two or three.
But on the other hand I wouldn't want them "out" because of the dust/sunlight getting to them making them fade/whatever

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/11/2020 09:12

Mine are a good 20ft from the nearest window so it think doors plus distance hopefully means they're safe enough

whynotwhen · 05/11/2020 09:14

Ooh I've got the itch now. I want a new handbag... I've only had one new one this year, sacrilege !!

mrsbyers · 05/11/2020 09:17

I just have mine on a coat stand in my bedroom away from the window

Crappyfridays7 · 05/11/2020 09:37

I have some lovely bags too however they are safely on a shelf in my wardrobe in their dust bags I don’t need to see them but who would you display them to? Just so you can see them? It’s lovely to have nice things though so I understand just like to keep mine covered and safe (from the cats just in case)

LilyLongJohn · 05/11/2020 09:46

IKEA do a glass tall cabinet

LaMarschallin · 05/11/2020 10:03

I was told some of my items of jewellery should be kept in a safe and that I'd get more favourable terms if they weren't "on display".

I don't know if that makes a difference with bags. I didn't realise it was worth asking about them.

LaMarschallin · 05/11/2020 10:16

Sorry - I mean I don't know if it's worth asking about them.

It might be depending, obviously, on price.
And it gets less so if it's easily replaceable.

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/11/2020 10:39

I'd need a very big safe Grin

Personally I do have a safe however it's not detailed on my insurance as I think if you had something stolen which should have been in the safe but wasn't you'd be less likely to get paid out. Same applies for not setting the house alarm apparently
