How do you store and display beautiful handbags?!

Over the last 7 years I’ve got hold of about 7 rather lovely handbags. I have enough now. I store them with a few other general bags in an ottoman, but they are so nice I would like to display them as well as store. Although I know that’s not always good for them Confused. I don’t want to come across as all Real Housewives - I’m not like that at all - but any ideas?! Should I just put up some kind of shelf or buy an IKEA kallax (I could paint it some nice colour too.). Will they get dirty dusty 😞? OTOH I like to see them sometimes

I've recently arranged mine on a shelving unit within my wardrobe, so they're protected from the light most of the time, but I can see them en masse whenever I open the wardrobe. It makes me really happy to see them like that Grin

Singinghollybob · 05/11/2020 12:55

I have mine in their dust bags and boxes and then hidden. I'm reluctant to have them out on display incase the house gets broken into and it makes it easier for the burglars to see and swipe them

bengalcat · 05/11/2020 12:58

Slob that I am , I just bung my small collection in the wardrobe or hang on the back of the bedroom door - a glass cabinet sounds nice though .

LongPauseNoAnswer · 05/11/2020 12:59

@SpeckledyHen

Mine are stored in a glass fronted IKEA cabinet in my spare room .
Mine too in my walk in.

They're stored in their dust bags with their tissue paper inserts to keep the shape.

GreekIslandTime · 05/11/2020 14:41

I live alone.

Its for me to see only.

They are beautiful. I love art and paintings etc.

Why are people being so nasty I don't know.

I'll look at IKEA tall glass cabinet, thanks.

I have been looking at other IKEA stuff, but can't face putting it together!

I consider my bags very lovely but I don't think needing a locked "safe" material here. But a desperado could steal them, that has crossed my mind Sad.

And, Whynot, you are right, it also reminds me what I've got ...

My bags hang on a freestanding hatstand in a corner of the the landing. I like to have them visible and in easy reach so that I use them. Mine aren’t valuable though, just nice quality leather like Enny & The Bridge.

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/11/2020 14:50

Whatever home decor idea you have, someone on MN will declare it naff. It's always like that.

Personally I like seeing mine, they're colourful and pretty and frankly getting sod all use just now so they might as well be ornaments!

catwithflowers · 05/11/2020 14:56

GreekIsland that sounds lovely. I love beautiful things too. I have a few posh carrier bags displayed in the corner of our bedroom, one from the Cartier watch I saved up all year to buy and another couple from bags or jewellery. They are actually empty but I love looking at the bags 🙈😬. It's not to show off to anyone else as no one but me and my husband goes in there!

We display art, we have our books on shelves to be used or looked at so why not handbags? 😊

GreekIslandTime · 05/11/2020 14:56

Maybe this one from IKEA? I could put store some other stuff in it too, and they would all be nice and visible (I'm not made about rooting round in a dark wardrobe, though I do). Cost £40 to deliver though. Then I gotta put it together.

PS. I realise really shouldn't post on MN. I'm not tough skinned enough.

That's nice. The modern Ikea stuff is very easy - we have just moved and I've built 6 of the blooming billy bookcases plus umpteen other things. You can do it

GreekIslandTime · 05/11/2020 15:05

I'm gearing myself up to it, Stat!

If I was you I'd invest in perspex display boxes. Really make an art statement with them.

( but because I'm not you, my bags are stuffed into a drawer 😉 )

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/11/2020 15:22

Why not display things we find beautiful, just because they're also functional? I mean it's pretty common to display china, glassware, fancy le creuset pans...why should a pretty bag hide in the wardrobe?

That’s the one I have OP but the taller version .

From a personal perspective, I actually dislike displaying most things. China, glassware etc - all looks like a dust magnet to me and I dislike the sort of fussy look of having lots of stuff out on surfaces. Even worse if it serves no purpose - little wooden hanging signs for example.

With a bag, I find it a bit showy in a monetary sense to display it. If I went to someone’s house who had a load of designer bags on display, it would say “look at how much money I have!!!”. But this would also extend to any designer goods or big labels - shoes, jewellery etc.

Appreciate it’s just my opinion but that’s why I dislike showing off designer items.

2021optimist · 05/11/2020 19:05

Mine are on open IKEA shelves in a walk in wardrobe. I enjoy seeing them whenever I go in there.

GreekIslandTime · 05/11/2020 19:16

How lovely, Optimist.

OP posts:
grannieali · 05/11/2020 19:56

Weird! Who is going to admire your display? Unless you are going to be using all the bags regularly, keep the two best to fit most occasions and sell the rest. You can give the money to charity. Some of the posts on Mumsnet strike me as infantile.

throwaway10000 · 05/11/2020 20:00

@grannieali what a rude and tone deaf post. Have you realised this is the style and beauty board? Are you lost?

StatisticallyChallenged · 05/11/2020 20:03

Oh we're only allowed 2 bags now? Bugger off.
