Please help me not hate my wedding dress

Getting married in the Dominican Republic in a few months (Covid allowing..) I bought a dress and fell in love with it in the shop but honestly I want to cry when I see photos of it now as it just doesn't look right. I know what I want it to look like, if anyone here knows anything about alterations please give me some advice.

Firstly I'm closing up the plunging V-neck. The boning will be bought together at the front.

The issue I have, is the cups. You couldn't see them in the mirror when I tried it on but I hate how they look in the photos. I need to figure out the best way of getting rid of them, options being to replace them with nude cups, or to just line the whole bodice with skin colour material. At the moment I'm just so unhappy with how to front looks.

Thanks

Go up and press the three dots on your first post, click report, and ask MN to move it to Style and Beauty

It's beautiful OP! You're goi g to be a stunning bride!

username3565 · 31/10/2020 09:32

I think you pull it off better than the model OP! I do agree a lining would help. It's is beautiful.
You have got to be happy with your dress. I wasn't in the end with mine and it whilst there are obviously are bigger things in life it left me feeling a little sad. Basically i had to have my arms covered (religious reasons). I always say I got married a year too early for my dress I got married 2010 the year before Kate and Will. She basically wore my ideal dress. I couldn't find anything like that. So I got a sleeveless one and order a kind of sheer jacket that the women in the dress shop said 'should match.' Well it didn't. I ended up in a mad panic buying a jacket from Debenhams that actually matched better. In the end I knew it wasn't right the dress it should not have been wore with a jacket. I probably should have gone to a dress maker or shopped further.

That is an absolutely gorgeous dress. I agree with removing the cups and lining the front with nude fabric but I would wait and try on your own properly fitted dress first and see how you feel.

I like the V front as it is.

@Weddingdressregret

Just realised I won't be able to come back to update as I posted in 30 days only. How do I move it?
We're moving this thread over to Style & Beauty now, OP.

Absolutely stunning dress, by the way. Smile

Retailqueenie · 31/10/2020 10:28

If it’s being made, surely you can request these changes?

It’s a beautiful dress!

catnoir1 · 31/10/2020 11:08

I wouldn't change any of it. I think it's stunning.

StatisticallyChallenged · 31/10/2020 11:17

I'd probably switch to nude cups and line it - the lining will still be fine so white cups might still shine through with a flash.

I wouldn't close up the plunge, I think it will distort the whole shape of the front. Once it's lined if you still think it's too much then you could possibly get beading/sequins added to the central bit (to match the rest of your dress) so the v panel is stil there but just less transparent. But I don't think it's necessary, having that panel helps to highlight the detailing elsewhere.

Whatthebloodyell · 31/10/2020 11:29

I can see why you want to have the cups, but I don’t think the neck line needs altering at all! It’s not really ‘plunging’ as there is fabric in the middle, so It’s a demure ‘illusion plunge’! Don’t let your mother overly
Influence you here, you’re the one getting married, she got to chose her own wedding dress!

CoronaIsWatching · 31/10/2020 11:31

It looks amazing from the back. Looks like it needs something wrapped around the waist like lace or something

FlyNow · 31/10/2020 12:42

I agree that lining or changing the cups would be good, it is a stunning dress.

I'm so gutted that what seemed perfect in the shop seems a bit meh now

I know from being on a wedding forum that this is actually extremely common! Seemed like it happened to pretty much everyone on that forum, most people ended up buying two dresses. I totally scoffed at that, thought it was crazy. Then I bought my wedding dress, looked for ages, finally picked one, it looked great. When it came.... it looked meh.

joystir59 · 31/10/2020 12:46

I'd get the whole bodice lined with white material. Then it will be beautiful

Weddingdressregret · 31/10/2020 12:48

I do love the back. I'm hesitant to line it with white as I like the sheer look, it highlights the detail on the bodice more.

If I could get away with just changing to skin tone cups that would be ideal as it would be really breathable with the mesh and it's going to be really hot. I just don't want to look at my photos and notice them so I'll have to see about lining it.

I'm torn about the plunge neck now, I thought it would look nicer closed as the boning would be bought together and give it a more corset type look. I generally just didn't like how the front sat on me anyway as you can see how ill fitting it was so perhaps this would bother me less once fitted. My mum won't be impressed if I keep it!

I wouldn't want to wrap anything around the waist as I like the detailing at the back where the bodice meets the skirt which I think that would hide? This pic shows what I mean?

Weddingdressregret · 31/10/2020 12:50

Obviously the straps at the back were being pulled to sit tight and are a little twisted once again the dress was just so big on me it was hard to get an accurate idea

OP posts:
AcrobaticCardigan · 31/10/2020 13:07

I love the back - the skirt is amazing! Alterations make SUCH a difference. I cried after my first wedding dress fitting the dress just looked all wrong. Went back to a different lady who put some cups in and lo & behold it was perfect!

StatisticallyChallenged · 31/10/2020 13:14

I would definitely try it on when it comes in, in your size, before deciding on the front. I think it being so big will have distorted how it looked and it won't have been easy to clip/hold in place

MyFavouritePlace · 31/10/2020 14:01

It's a beautiful dress and definitely looks better on you than model.

WitchesSpelleas · 31/10/2020 14:06

Definitely leave the back as it is.

Weddingdressregret · 31/10/2020 14:06

Messaged a few seamstresses about alterations and all have suggested changing the cups rather than lining it. Two of them have said they don't think it would even be possible to close the boning at the front as there won't be the spare material as it's been made to my size.

OP posts:
steppemum · 31/10/2020 14:08

Can I ask when did you try it on and order it?

I think if you ordered it in the summer/tail end of summer, and are lookign at it now, it will feel massively different.

Summer clothes always look weird in winter. But remember you will be in the sun on the beach, so it will have a beach vibe. Not a rainy October day vibe.

WeAreFromThePlanetDuplo · 31/10/2020 14:12

I like the plunge feature. Can the same material that is between the bones be used for lining, or covering the cups?

Enough4me · 31/10/2020 14:13

I'd just change the cups to nude as think it's beautiful apart from the round white cups. Back is stunning and it looks really graceful overall.

Nothing helpful to add I'm afraid but just wanted to say you look fantastic and congratulations! Hope covid doesn't ruin your plans xx

Emelene · 31/10/2020 14:20

I think the dress is gorgeous. I see what you mean about the cups and I would also probably change them but sounds like that will be doable. You will look lovely xxx
