Please help me not hate my wedding dress

Getting married in the Dominican Republic in a few months (Covid allowing..) I bought a dress and fell in love with it in the shop but honestly I want to cry when I see photos of it now as it just doesn't look right. I know what I want it to look like, if anyone here knows anything about alterations please give me some advice.

Firstly I'm closing up the plunging V-neck. The boning will be bought together at the front.

The issue I have, is the cups. You couldn't see them in the mirror when I tried it on but I hate how they look in the photos. I need to figure out the best way of getting rid of them, options being to replace them with nude cups, or to just line the whole bodice with skin colour material. At the moment I'm just so unhappy with how to front looks.

Thanks

Thank you so much, there have been so many lovely comments on here. I wasn't expecting this reaction which is why I initially posted in 30 days only as I wanted to make sure the photos would be gone asap so blown away by all the compliments! I hope I can make it perfect! Smile

It’s a gorgeous dress but I agree about the cups. They really spoil sheer dresses.

I would go back to the shop with a removable nude bra pad (like the type you get in a bikini) and take the photos again but with the pad somewhere in the dress - this way you can decide if that’s good enough or if the whole front of the dress needs to be lined. It’ll save you potentially having to change your mind later down the line.

I agree with the lining idea and it's such a perfect dress for a beach wedding. It's so floaty and says sand, sea, sun and romance to me.

I wanna go on holiday now. Grin

I think you’ll be surprised at what a seamstress can do. I had a few weeks to plan my wedding so very limited choice of dresses and my seamstress worked wonders. I loved parts of my dress but it had the WEIRDEST neckline I have ever seen - halfway down to my belly button! And strange baggy lace sleeves halfway down my arms. My seamstress changed the internal neckline completely to a sweetheart one, so I wasn’t half naked, made cap sleeves, changed the shape of the lace neckline and loads of other stuff. It looked just as I imagined it when she’d finished with it.

And to be honest, your dress already looks absolutely stunning, and the shape over the chest fits you much nicer than the model. I know the cups will be so noticeable to you, because you’re picking up on every little detail right now, but it’s honestly such a minor one that most people aren’t going to notice. Nude cups in a colour very close to your skin tone sound like a good idea.

@Ohalrightthen I agree! The photo of the model wearing the dress doesn't do it justice, it's beautiful on you OP.
I would contact the shop though and explain your reservations. They may be able to suggest something.

I think it’s really important to love your dress. Mine was nice but I really wish I’d taken more time as I liked it but didn’t love it. If you are unsure and don’t want to spend a fortune, brands like Whistles have dresses in the 100-300 mark - they’re simple but that would go for a beach wedding.

As everyone else is saying, do line it and hell yes to the change of cups. I know it’s a beach wedding and you’ll be hot but I’m not sure about showing too much skin if it’s not lined in a wedding dress - not that I think you should be in some up to the neck number but it’s a wedding dress not a party dress. That’s just personal opinion though!

I’d make the changes and see how you feel. But if you don’t really love it, consider other options. It’s not something you want to have regrets about!

Take it to a dressmaker who makes/alters dance costumes.
It needs bodice lined with flesh coloured mesh and the special invisible cups they use for dance costumes and sometimes skate costumes.

It fits you beautifully though and skirt is magical.

I would be conscious of the bodice too just needs lined.

PrincessForADay · 01/11/2020 13:50

Wow! The dress is stunning. I adore the back. It needs to be perfect though so it's good you want it tweaked

DPotter · 01/11/2020 13:58

Your dress is stunning.

I agree with others about lining the bodice. If nothing else the mesh will be very itchy and hot in hot weather.

claire697 · 01/11/2020 22:58

It's lovely. Remember the light will be very different in DR to a cold winter day in the UK, and that should help in look more like the lovely lighting they had in the shop.

Mine had two inner seams which one I got it home showed through. I really worried about them but in the end it was fine.

Good luck!

Rosere · 01/11/2020 23:15

That dress is spectacular!! You will be beautiful. The current cups are fine, nude though would also be lovely. I didn't even notice them initially, I was bedazzled by the fab dress.

I think it is almost mandatory to have a wobble about your dress. I was online the week before my wedding looking for another. I wised up though 🤣

BruceAndNosh · 02/11/2020 08:20

Gorgeous dress. If it looks that good in the wrong size, it will be stunning when fitted.
You win the "who wore it better" comp with the model in photo!

thebabessavedme · 02/11/2020 09:46

OP, I have worked in Bridal and you are doing the classic! (ever heard the saying 'familiarity breeds contempt?) stop looking at the photo so often! the more you look the more critical you will be, dont show anyone else the photo, dont listen too much to your mum, its your dress not hers! Smile

wait until you go for your first fitting and look at it then, you loved it when you chose it, you never know, you may still love it! and remember a good seamstress will do any tweaks needed.

btw, I think its a lovely dress and just right for a beach wedding, not too much fabric, lovely sparkly bodice and will pack really well, buy a carry on suitcase and get your bridal house to pack it for you, hang as soon as you arrive, the humidity will help knock out any creases.

Oly4 · 02/11/2020 22:17

What a stunning dress!! Don’t alter the plunge neckline, it is beautiful and flattering and not at all “plunge”!
I can see the cups because you mentioned them.. I’d just have a dresssmaker line the front with nude fabric.
But you truly look amazing.. your husband will love it
