These skirts - am I mad?

They look cosy & perfect for winter - but I have a suspicion that on someone (ie me) not model shaped the effect may not be quite the same.... I particularly fancy this one but looking at the reviews probably too long, so maybe this one. this dress looks gorgeous too, but I am very much not a tall willowy teenager....

@PoulePouletteEternellement

Thing is, having known a few people who would actually have been 1950's farmers' wives, I'm a little furious that this shop is pulling the wool over your eyes. That's not how they dressed - at least that's not the sort of clothes they would ever have bought, new, from a shop. The only way they'd be wearing clothes like that is if they borrowed their husbands' cast offs. The clothes they bought would have been impossibly glamorous little sleeveless frocks, with scoop necks and tiny waists, in the prettiest possible prints. Invariably worn with a little string of pearls.

I am intrigued though, by the limited stocks of dye employed by this singularly unpoetic retailer ...

None of the farmers wives I know can afford to buy anything new. The nice pretty stuff is mainly all borrowed while the day to day stuff tends to be passed on from family as being useful. I know one lady who lives in her 17 year old boy’s outgrown tracksuits.

I love them all OP, I really like the dress but the colour is just a bit drab. The style is lovely though and I love both the skirts.

MitziK · 29/10/2020 21:52

@Sadik

I think what I actually want is 1950s farmers wife reimagined by Muji - I've got a camel coloured yak hair sort of smock/short tunic thing from them which sounds terrible but is incredibly flattering.
Add a faded A line corduroy skirt and you've got more of a 1980s Social Worker vibe going on.

When they weren't actually doing the animal care (as there were plenty of workers to do that anyhow), farmers' wives were immaculately dressed with a heavyweight pinny over their cotton/wool skirts.

chunkyrun · 29/10/2020 21:54

Not for me they look like very expensive potato sacks

Sadik · 29/10/2020 21:57

I obviously knew the wrong farmers wives in the 70s!

The 70s? Watch The Good Life for Barbara's outfits (generally dungarees and cords). All very fashionable at the time.
Sadik · 29/10/2020 22:01

Ironically I can do 2020 Farmer quite nicely being in that line of work. It's not very aesthetic and involves overalls, wellies & bib & brace waterproofs though Grin

I like it. Could you find a similar cheaper alternative? It might swamp you a bit but worth a try? You can always send it back.
I've a few on the knee or bit shorter cord skirts and they are feeling a bit dated now.

Sadik · 29/10/2020 22:05

"I've a few on the knee or bit shorter cord skirts and they are feeling a bit dated now."
That's the problem exactly, I've got a couple of winter skirts that length (both from Uniqlo) and they just feel dated

@Sadik

What skirt would you lot wear with a (burnt orange) wool jumper for this winter?
What about something a bit shapelier and lighter like this
Sadik · 29/10/2020 22:10

Any views on this uniqlo skirt? I've got an above the knee lined fleece equivalent that I've had for years & is strange but actually looks great (other than the length issue)

OP posts:
Sadik · 29/10/2020 22:12

I think I'd be cold is the main problem flloofy

missbunnyrabbit · 29/10/2020 22:12

I'm wondering why on earth would anyone spend so much on such ugly, frumpy clothes!

floofycroissant · 29/10/2020 22:15

I love that skirt! But I'm very tall.

How about you go left field and try some culottes these or these

DrGachet · 29/10/2020 22:16

The dress is similar to one I have from Toast. Have you looked at their site OP?

thirstyformore · 29/10/2020 22:19

I'm sorry but I think they are really awful. Not my taste at all. But they do look comfy!

Sadik · 29/10/2020 22:21

I think Toast is a good idea DrGachet - the problem I have is that their website doesn't show the clothes being worn, which makes it much harder to judge the shape/hang of them I find.
Culottes or wide cropped trousers might be the other answer - I guess no reason I couldn't wear tights underneath just as I would with a skirt

A denim one
Sadik · 29/10/2020 22:33

What length would you go for?

OP posts:
Floisme · 29/10/2020 23:37

I think they all look much better in the catalogue than they do on my phone. I like the second skirt best - the pleat adds volume and gives it a more interesting shape, although I'm not sure how well it would hold it as corduroy can go droopy.

Poetry seem to have really upped their game lately and I agree they've got a bit of a Toast vibe going on now, although I know that's a divisive thing to say round here Wink
I've never bought it though so I don't know if it's worth the money.

Wiredforsound · 30/10/2020 06:18

These clothes are ugly. The models don’t even look good or comfortable in them.

StarlightLady · 30/10/2020 07:32

I’m early 40s and pretty much live in dresses as my wardrobe staple. I like the cut of the dress but does it come in colour? I think it would make a wintery day feel more wintery. If it had a small subtle pattern (l’m not talking bright bold flowers and swirls), l would prefer it.

As for the skirts, they would need accessorising to liven them up, but to be homest, I’m finding it hard to focus because of the hideous jumpers the models are wearing with them.

nitgel · 30/10/2020 07:37

Like the first skirt

CeibaTree · 30/10/2020 07:41

Lily and Me have nicer cord things at the moment.
