These skirts - am I mad?

They look cosy & perfect for winter - but I have a suspicion that on someone (ie me) not model shaped the effect may not be quite the same.... I particularly fancy this one but looking at the reviews probably too long, so maybe this one. this dress looks gorgeous too, but I am very much not a tall willowy teenager....

Oh go for it. Cord skirts are fabulous and so practical ( unless they are too long to walk in, go up stairs etc). They look great and now I'm hooing they are in the sale
Pythone · 30/10/2020 09:14

I love the dress! Only in the dark grey though - the light blue reminds me of a child's art smock, and the beige is very... beige.

Lardlizard · 30/10/2020 09:16

I was expecting someThing more wild
It’s ok a bit drab but ok

BusterGonad · 30/10/2020 09:25

With a orange jumper I'd go for a, denim skirt, above the knee, tights and boots, or my favourite way to wear things is under a dress. I'm not keen on any of the stuff you've linked op, and the Uniqlo skirt is even worse. Sorry.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/10/2020 09:32

The Poetry skirts are a bit drab and too long. The Uniqlo skirt is, frankly, hideous. The dress is only tolerable acceptable in blue, and is appalling in the other colours.

Sorry OP, but I think you can do much better.

The grey Whistles skirt is lovely, but Whistles quality so variable that I wouldn't pay anywhere near full price for i t.

fantasmasgoria1 · 30/10/2020 09:36

My opinion only. They are all quite frumpy and the colours are dreadful. All black would be better.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/10/2020 09:37

M&S usually have a cord skirt or two.

Floisme · 30/10/2020 09:41

I think calf length with ankle boots or shoes can be very unforgiving, but I don't think they'd look too long if they were worn with knee boots. But then I like the colours so I think I'm out of tune with a lot of this thread.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 30/10/2020 09:44

I'd go for something straighter, rather than A line. I don't think it matters that you are short (it's never stopped me), but I'd wear it with knee high heeled boots. I quite liked the first skirt in terms of colour and material, but the shape isn't right imo and it's way too pricey for what it is.

BusterGonad · 30/10/2020 09:49

What about a suede skirt like the M&S one Alexa Chung wore a few years ago that sold out? So much more stylish and suitable for all ages and most figures I think.

Sadik · 30/10/2020 09:56

"With a orange jumper I'd go for a denim skirt, above the knee, tights and boots"
Now that I have in my wardrobe, but I've been wearing that look for too many years & it's a bit like skinnies, I know a lot of people still wear them, but I've just lost the love.

They could look a bit Plymouth Brethen if you're not careful.

I have a similar skirt, though linen and slightly more A line, and I think this describes how I feel in it (plus I had to Google and found out more about the Plymouth Brethren!)

Sadik · 30/10/2020 10:02

I think with the colours they are just ones that I know will suit me - those muted tones definitely work on me. That or a forest green / or a dusty not-quite-navy blue would also be good. I really don't do patterns at all, I've tried over the years but just don't get on with them. Anything Japanese influenced in colour / size / cut is also generally good on me - as well as being short I'm kind of undersized small all over!

Lots of great suggestions to check out though. Ideally I try really hard to by organic / non sweatshop which is what led me to those Poetry ones, and what puts me off Uniqlo.

Cos have got some very soft needlecord ( I think that’s the right word) things in at the moment in various colours.

BikeRunSki · 30/10/2020 10:16

I love them all. Love a bit of Puritanical fashion. I always forget about Poetry and Wrap, because their tops are really short on me. May look again at thecskirts

goldenharvest · 30/10/2020 10:30

Look frumpy and unflattering to most shapes, to me

elQuintoConyo · 30/10/2020 10:42

They lack neon.

I suppose they're ok in lambing season when they'd be covered in placenta, otherwise frumpadupdump.

Sadik · 30/10/2020 13:44

"They lack neon."
Very true!

QueenJulian could you link to the Cos needlecord ones - I did look there, & I've looked again but I'm totally failing to find them (unless they're only in store maybe?). I think it's their sort of look that I'm aiming for, & their colours tend to suit my taste

I'd have worn those in my teens when big jumpers, long skirts and lace up boots were last in. Funnily enough my mother used to ask why I was wearing those hideous baggy jumpers and shapeless long skirts, her words are coming back to me from this thread.

It must be impossible for one generation to appreciate the trends of the next, we are frozen in neat little jeans and fitted dresses and looking baffled at the shops full of "potato sacks" and "dull colours".

Great skirts. I mean they sure look comfortable.

CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 30/10/2020 18:25

I have the dress in the cotton version (last year). It’s so comfy. If the cord is soft, I’d say buy it. The skirts look quite stiff to me.

foxtiger · 30/10/2020 19:09

I like the two skirts but not the dress - it's an odd sort of length, neither long nor properly short - if anything it might look better on you if you're not as tall as the model.

And thank you for posting this. I have some boots fairly similar to the ones in the first picture that I want to wear for walking to walk over the winter (I walk a long way), and I wasn't sure if they would look OK with longish skirts. Now I feel a bit more confident that they probably will.
