I've just read that Prince William had Covid19 in April.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 02/11/2020 00:45

Wowzers LadyE I've just seen it on the BBC news

Yes, he was quite ill with it, but didn't want people to know because he didn't want to cause worry and concern.

This would be not very long after he toured to Ireland and joked that he was spreading it.

M-M:s dress is at least a bit corageous! I like how it's a sort of modern version of those very ornate 19th century dresses that could be in blocks of colour and trim. But on the whole I agree, it looks a bit Orla Kiely ;)

CPM:s award ceremony greige dress is so Danish in design it almost hurts me, so I had to check if my impressions were right and I was, it's a Danish designer called Soeren Le Schmidt. Which is a very funny name btw.

There's a Hello article on it as well www.hellomagazine.com/fashion/royal-style/2020102899880/princess-sofia-cream-boots-striped-jacket-new-appearance-prince-carl-philip/

latedecember1963 · 02/11/2020 10:57

Our DS1 is getting married next August and Mary's dress is the sort of thing I would like as M of the groom.

latedecember1963 · 02/11/2020 11:01

Not the white one, I should clarify!
My mother wore white to our wedding, on purpose, but that's a whole other story!

Horsemad · 02/11/2020 11:10

@latedecember1963, I LOVE that dress, it would be something I'd go for too, very elegant. 🙂

Now tell us more about your Mother purposely wearing white to your wedding! 😲

Just to hark back to the talk of the 'spare' - Ma-am Darling is a wonderful and easy read. It's an insight into the life of Princess Margaret. Some of the snipets about her (and her husband's) behavior in company are jaw dropping!

It was a great read over the summer. It does make you wonder how much fun it really is being The Other One and i did feel sympathy actually but my god she could be a cow!

Maireas · 02/11/2020 15:26

I thought it was an enjoyable book, Laiste, and quite revealing. I struggled to have sympathy with her, though!

Laiste · 02/11/2020 17:49

Maireas I wouldn't say it was deep sympathy i felt GrinWink

Rather more of an understanding of how, especially back then, it could be frustrating being the second born. Sort of just expect to drift about behaving themselves, being a pretty thing and promoting the brand. Education wasn't high on the agenda for the girls and 'having opinions' isn't part of the job description for no.1 or 2.

She was a tiny woman, and very beautiful i think. Always looked stunning in her evening wear or headscarf, sunglasses and day dresses. I was interested to see if there was any hint of jealousy between Margaret and Elizabeth. I found the descriptions of how Elizabeth used to worry about M's behavior and how anxious she was as a child (unable to sleep unless she could get up and re-arrange shoes neatly) was quite sad.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 02/11/2020 18:47

I get the impression that it was far much easier to be the spare & spares pre WW1.
Lots of money, wide spread deference to royals, no social media let alone TV (easy to hide discretions/poor choices) & plenty of other royals to socialise with or marry/have a dalliance with.
The worst thing seems to be it could be difficult to marry just for love, many royal marriages were unofficially arranged &/or seen as alliances between other royal marriages.
A pp said many threads ago that Margaret was born in the wrong era.
If she had been born 50 years earlier she most likely would have been married off to a Crown Price or Grand Duke of another royal family a bit like Queen Marie (Missy) of Romania or Tsarina Alexandra (Alix) of Russia both QV's granddaughters.
Margaret in her much younger days before she became so cynical & selfish rather reminds me of Missy.

Not read 'Ma'am Darling' yet.
Laiste was it Elizabeth or Margaret who was anxious & needed to rearrange shoes when unable to sleep?

Maireas · 02/11/2020 19:14

Elizabeth had toy horses and would brush their manes and line them up. She was a very orderly child, by all accounts! I think I don't have sympathy for the "spare" because of the enormous privilege. Think of the good you can do, the difference you can make. Instead of feeling self pity, think about projects to be involved with, ideas, groups, connections. You can still live a very enjoyable life, but make it productive!
Rant over. Back to fashion. Margaret's wedding dress is one of my all time favourites!

Talking about royal wedding dresses here's a piece about royal bridesmaids starting with Princess Beatrice's (QV's daughter) wedding ending with Princess Charlotte as bridesmaid at Auntie Pippa's wedding.

@frugalkitty have sent you a pm re Elemis.

Excuse the quick hijack

Horsemad · 02/11/2020 20:07

Thanks @TracyBeakerSoYeah, I enjoyed looking at the bridesmaids - loved seeing the different fashions - and I still loathe the outfit Kate wore to Pippa's wedding! 😆

Laiste · 02/11/2020 20:35

TracyBeakerSoYeah It was Elizabeth :)

Maireas · 02/11/2020 20:41

Me too Horsemad sometimes I wonder why people spend thousands on an outfit that is so unflattering.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 02/11/2020 20:45

Thanks Laiste I wasn't sure if I was reading it correctly........and I wasn't Smile

frugalkitty · 02/11/2020 22:12

Thanks Tracy

latedecember my MIL wore black to our wedding. I don't think she smiled once the entire time Hmm

StatisticallyChallenged · 02/11/2020 22:25

I'm a total outlier on this but I actually like the dress Kate wore to Pippa's wedding. The colour wouldn't be my choice but you can see in that photo it matches Charlotte's sash so it was almost certainly chosen to match the wedding colours.

The sage green on Zara and co at Autumn and Peter's wedding are awful, somebody call a seamstress and adjust them so they stay up!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 02/11/2020 22:31

Oh dear frugalkitty Confused
My DMIL wore a black dress but at least it had pink roses on it & wore a pink hat with it.

Looking at the strapless bridesmaids dresses at Peter & Autumn Philips wedding, I wonder if the Queen had a fit of the vapours over the bare shoulders in church?

Maireas · 02/11/2020 22:47

The strapless dresses at the Phillips wedding were just awful. Kate's dress at Pippa's wedding fitted so badly, it made her boobs look awful. Horrible colour imho.

The tan lines on the bridesmaids at Peter and Autumn's wedding Shock

latedecember1963 · 03/11/2020 06:42

That's awful, Frugalkitty! I've been very lucky to have a wonderful MiL. I can't imagine treating my future DiL badly. Apart from it being wrong, I wouldn't want to upset my son.
We've been married 32 years, so we've had the last laugh!
