How many coats do we think she has?

She's a funny woman my MIL, luckily we only see them a few times a year (and not since last summer with covid around). We still don't know if she knows DH's brother got married.....about four years ago!

Seraphinite · 03/11/2020 08:00

I’ve changed names since I last posted here but still follow along/lurk!

Randomly (I blame this thread in fact! 😬) this popped up in my Instagram and I’m sure some of you will like it. Rare photos of Diana on her wedding day.

Seraphinite

I know it has its detractors but Diana's wedding dress (seen in that photo you posted) had drama and romance.
A bit like the marriage I suppose.
Though the romance was with others, sadly.
I loved it.
I love too the way she has scooped up the wee flower girl in her arms.

Seraphinite · 03/11/2020 10:01

I agree about the dress - it’s not my taste at all but it certainly makes a statement!

If you swipe through to all the photos there’s one of Diana getting her makeup touched up which I thought was a lovely behind-the-scenes moment

Horsemad · 03/11/2020 10:48

I loved Diana's dress. Absolutely loved it.

Laiste · 03/11/2020 10:50

@Seraphinite Thank you for those photos :)

I adored Diana and her dress!
(i was about 11 when she got married and remember watching it on TV, totally entranced)

I think we've bonded before over that dress here Grin

I very much enjoy looking at informal/unofficial shots of people and events. There's always SO much more info. to be found in them. They're in the wrong order, those shots of Diana picking up her young bridesmaid. If you're a bit sad like me you look carefully it's almost like a jumbled up bit of film. Everyone including HM is trying to help the young girl with something (her hair or her eye) and then we see the young pageboy has taken Diana's bouquet and Diana reaching down to pick up the girl before carrying her along that lovely corridor alongside HM. Fascinating! GrinBlush

Laiste · 03/11/2020 10:51

and at horsemad as well Grin

LadyEloise · 03/11/2020 11:02

Horsemad
I loved it too Blush

banivani · 03/11/2020 12:40

I oddly think Diana's dress works better than some other more toned down dresses simply because it goes the whole hog and owns the drama. The fabric looks gorgeous. But timeless it ain't!

So many of those bridesmaid/pageboy outfits are absolutely terrible, proving that money doesn't buy taste. So costumey and over the top!

The instagram account with the Diana photos also had this amazing photo of queen Rania www.instagram.com/p/CG2PqwendqW/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link I love those colours and the neckline.

Seraphinite · 03/11/2020 12:47

Well spotted @Laiste - there is a story in those photos!

I actually didn’t look at the rest of the account before but I’m so glad I did now - how’s this for best Halloween costume ever?! 😂😍

Diana's dress is very much of its time but it a stunning dress. I remember watching on tv and she twinkled all the way down the aisle. That's what Kate's dress and veil lacked in my opinion, both on tv and on display it was flat. I had a duplicate Diana wedding dress for my Sindy doll Grin

Spreadingchestnut · 03/11/2020 13:20

Ah, I liked Diana's twinkly dress too, creases and all. She'd only just left her teens when she wore it and something stiff and understated-elegant wouldn't have suited her youth. The fabric, in particular, was gorgeous.

Spreadingchestnut · 03/11/2020 13:22

That toddler looks incredible as the Queen btw, albeit a bit annoyed! Grin

SenecaFallsRedux · 03/11/2020 14:40

That little Queen is wonderful.

Laiste · 03/11/2020 14:58

I would have loved a Diana dress for a doll!

I remember the fabric all spilling and falling out of the carriage when they opened the doors, like a wave of cream, and then her in the middle of it all with that neckline, and being just ShockShock and thinking (aged 11 remember) that if i could look like that in a dress like that i would just probably explode with happiness Grin

(my DM was watching with me and was all cat's bum faced about the dress)(she's remained cat's bum faced about Diana to this day! We agree to disagree)

Spreadingchestnut · 03/11/2020 15:11

Yes all the older women in my family are cat's bum faced about Diana too. They say she manipulated the press etc. To my mind, anyone being written about and photographed to that ridiculous degree would try and control the narrative to some extent. You'd be mad not to try and take back some control.

Horsemad · 03/11/2020 15:37

Oh yes, when she emerged from the carriage, it was like a tsunami of beautiful fabric, just amazing

Horsemad · 03/11/2020 15:37

Haha, how cute is Mini Queen?! 🤣😂

Maireas · 03/11/2020 16:36

That mini Queen is adorable! Do cute!
Diana's dress was wonderful, you needed flamboyance and drama to go up the aisle in that amazing cathedral! It instantly made 70s wedding dresses seem dull and dated. She glittered and glowed and was so obviously thrilled and happy.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 03/11/2020 17:25

Diana looked so happy though she was brave to pick up that flower girl.
No flower girls hands were allowed anywhere near my wedding dress.

I wouldn't be very happy about my 19yr old DD getting engaged to a man of 32. Well I wouldn't be very happy about my DD getting engaged at 19 full stop as I want her to be carefree & out enjoying herself.
Poor Diana & even Charles they were like lambs to the slaughter in an arranged marriage.
Though to be fair they did try to give it go but they were so different & having 2 emotionally damaged people in a marriage is such hard work.

I love the mini Queen she's even got that slightly not amused look on her face, she's so cute.

Maireas · 03/11/2020 17:54

To be fair, 19 was different then. A lot of people still left school at 16, so many were already working. I think we grew up a little quicker! She certainly didn't seem too young at the time, and she seemed so happy and thrilled.

I'm another one who was captivated by Diana's dress. I remember that we watched the ceremony at school - I was 6 - and I was absolutely enchanted by the whole thing!

pandafunfactory · 03/11/2020 20:08

The flower girl was a pupil at the school where she taught. She fell over and bumped her head and Diana did what came naturally. The kid's mum then got the royal equivalent of an accident slip from the Queen ' now she fell over and bumped her head in the picture gallery'

MotherofPearl · 03/11/2020 20:30

She had such a natural warmth with children.

Eaumyword · 03/11/2020 21:59

Fabulous mini Queen!Grin
