How often do you wash your hair?

Me and my hair are not friends at the minute!!
My roots are very oily to the point I can wash my hair on day 1 and day 2 my hair would need washing again, but the ends of my hair are SO dry due to dying my hair. So I wash my hair probably every 2 days because my roots get greasy but obviously this is no good for the ends as they’re drying out!
I’m thinking of trying to wash it once a week say every Monday for example, I know my hair is going to look horrible but it’ll be good for the ends of my hair (and I can just stick it up during The end of the week)

How often do you wash your hair?? Is once a week not often enough?

I have very dry hair and wash it twice a week. Any less than that and it would be dirty rather than greasy.

dementedpixie · 15/10/2020 18:09

What shampoo are you using? Have you tried that Loreal Clay one that's supposed to be for greasy roots and dry ends. Maybe try twice a week rather than just once

Snackasaurus · 15/10/2020 18:10

Mine used to be like this but during lockdown, I left it for a week at a time and sometimes 2 weeks. Now, I can go a full week without washing. Currently isolating so it's nearly 3 weeks but still looks okay :)

GunsAndShips · 15/10/2020 18:12

Once a week. It looks the same on day 6 as it does on day 1.

FatGirlShrinking · 15/10/2020 18:19

Once or twice a week, I use L'Oréal kids 2 in 1 shampoo. I have fine hair that a few years ago was very greasy at the roots, switching to kids shampoo and not using a separate conditioner worked wonders for me. As an added bonus, I get the cherry and almond one so smell like Bakewell tart Grin

EL8888 · 15/10/2020 18:25

Every other day. At times my hair tries to trick me into doing it every day but l point blank refuse!

bellalou1234 · 15/10/2020 18:26

Every other day but on the second day it's so greasy, literally tired most shampoos aimed at greasy roots dry ends. Think we need to go cold turkey and try leaving it..

Nuffaluff · 15/10/2020 18:28

Every three days on my hairdresser’s advice.
I had the same problem as you - really dry ends - when I was washing it every other day. Now, on the third day, it doesn’t look great, but I just put some dry shampoo on the roots. My hair is in much better condition now and my colour has lasted longer.

unmarkedbythat · 15/10/2020 18:33

Loreal does a shampoo and conditioner called "Rebalancing", for greasy roots and dry ends. When it's on offer somewhere I stock up because it actually does seem to work. If I have dried my hair straight, I can go 3 days without a hair washing using that. (If I have let it dry curly it is a knotted, frizzy mess the next day regardless of what I do to it so it can't be left.)

I have tried knocking shampoo on the head before, did 12 days once and was an itchy, greasy, smelly mess. Tried conditioner only, greasy as feck. I don't mind washing my hair every few days anyway.

Sinead543 · 15/10/2020 18:37

@dementedpixie at the minute I’m using the lee Stafford growth shampoo and condition (because I’m trying to grow my hair as well) and I’m wondering if this is doing more damage than good, I’ll have a look at the L’Oréal one
@FatGirlShrinking I never thought about doing something like that I might give it a go!
@bellalou1234 I used to do it everyday as well because i like it looking soft and fluffy but at the minute I could never! the ends are so dry it’s just breaking
@Nuffaluff think I’m going to try every three days with a different shampoo/conditioner as well see how I get on with that

Twice a week.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 15/10/2020 18:44

Dry shampoo is what you need!

Sasuma · 15/10/2020 18:44

Almost every day. Might go a day or two a week where I skip it. I exercise pretty much every day though (and hard exercise where I’ll get sweaty, not gentle exercise) so it needs it. I don’t use heat on my hair regularly, just once a week or so, and so it’s in great condition. I know lots of people try and reduce the amount they wash their hair, but it works for me - it adds a couple of minutes to my shower time and then all I do is comb it through and add some hair oil.

ohidoliketobe · 15/10/2020 18:46

Used to be every other day due to greasy roots, but being a disgraceful mess during lockdown I've managed to get to every 5 days. My hair is in much better condition. Apparently with grease, the more you strip (wash) it the more it comes back as its your body trying to provide oil for the scalp. Takes a few weeks for it settle, but honestly give it a go. I need a bit of dry shampoo on days 4 and 5, but just a little spritz on the crown.

justanotherneighinparadise · 15/10/2020 18:47

Once every four days.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 15/10/2020 18:49

Get a clarifying shampoo to give your roots a good clean then put a conditioning mask on the ends of your hair. Try leaving it longer between each wash.
Also, if you don't already try switching to a hair dye with no ammonia. I did because normal hair dye was giving me 3 day migraines after dying, but my hair is in better condition now.
I used to wash my hair every day. Now once or twice a week. It probably does need it twice, but sometimes I'm lazy.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/10/2020 18:50

Every day. It’s a short, blunt bob, and I wake up looking bonkers - it’s easier to wash and dry than try to rescue it.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 15/10/2020 18:50

Don't use a clarifying shampoo often though, just for the initial wash incase your hair is becoming greasy due to build up.

notcycling · 15/10/2020 18:52

Every day. But that's because I exercise every day and I hate sweaty hair.

nixso29 · 15/10/2020 19:03

Wednesday and Sunday evenings!Means it is nice and fresh for the start of the working week, needs a wee spritz of dry shampoo on a weds and usually just tie it up in a loose bun with a scrunchie that day. Will do on a Friday aswell but only if I have weekend plans. Other than that I'm happy letting it be a bit greasy at the weekends and just put it in a french plait or wear a cap/bobble hat. I have used the L'Oréal clay shampoo in the past which I thought was good but have now changed on recommendation of my hairdresser to a Revlon one which is 2in1 so don't need additional conditioner which I find helps it be less greasy

Passthecake30 · 15/10/2020 19:03

Pre wfh all the time, every 2 days. Now... every 4Blush

Sakura7 · 15/10/2020 19:25

Have gone from every two days to every three days. Would like to stretch it further again but it's really not looking good by the end of day three.

butterpuffed · 15/10/2020 19:32

Put some baby talc on to a hairbrush and rub it into the greasy roots. Dry shampoo is mainly perfumed talc anyway but more expensive.

batteriesgoing · 15/10/2020 19:34

I wash the whole lot once a week and just the top section every day.

EatPrayYoga · 15/10/2020 19:35

Usually every second night but now I'm being a bit lazy so more like every three nights

I don't think once a week is enough, no. Whether your hair is greasy or not your scalp is still skin and produces oil and sweat so needs washing every couple of days IMHO
