Shrill, Boots (online) have YSL Black Opium EDT at half price currently.

I’m still working my way through samples. As a result I bought Penhaligon’s Ellenisia in their sale. This is an elegant fruity tuberose, somewhat light and sweet. It has a persistent close-to-the-skin dry down which is very enjoyable. It has similarities to Gucci Bloom, but I prefer the Ellenisia bottle (very pretty) and the tuberose is a bit more in the background.

I also tried Penhaligon’s Agarbathi, a woodsy incense. It is openly marketed towards men, not even unisex, so I should have avoided it, but I liked the look of the notes so decided to get a sample. Omg, it was disgusting, so so strong and like the cheapest amber/woods aftershave. It took several goes to get it off with soap and water. Serves me right! 😱

calm
A half price bottle of black opium is winging its way to me as we speak 😃💜

Shrillharridan · 18/11/2020 11:31

Penhaligons scare me a bit
Are they worth a punt in a sale?
I get halfeti as a match on their website?

KaliforniaDreamz · 18/11/2020 12:17

such a beautifu bottle. they do market well.

SOTD is a ML version of Coco mademoiselle. i rather like it.

riotlady · 18/11/2020 13:22

You can get four samples for about £5 I think if you want to give them a test first
KaliforniaDreamz · 18/11/2020 14:48

i've sprayed as ample of paco rabanne million and it isvery sweet. reminds me of amourage

Calmasasleepycat · 18/11/2020 18:43

Shrill, well done on the Black Opium! I could never see what the fuss was about in this one, until one day I “got” the coffee. Now I really love it and have worn it for years.

I’ve tried a few of the Penhaligons, through their sampling service. They are marmite fragrances, I find, and I think you definitely need to try before buying. I loved, and bought, a sale bottle of Vaara, which is a sweet and spicy feminine fragrance. I tested Opus and bought a bottle for DH. It is light, refined and gentlemanly and I get whiffs of it when we go for a walk 😊. I would happily wear this and do often have a quick spray.

Elisabethan Rose is a perfectly pleasant rose. It has a lot of fans but I think is a bit ordinary for the price. Bluebell is just a chemical mish-mash, to my nose.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 18/11/2020 20:46

SOTD MMM By the Fireplace.

Another Black Opium fan here!

Shrillharridan · 18/11/2020 20:59

We are perfume twins this evening judy!💜

I'm really looking forward to getting the black opium...for £30 I'm even more pleased!

Mmm replica coffee break was very disappointing...it was just a generic lavender on me 🤷‍♀️

I think mmm replica whispers in the library is a pleasant musk but 4160 tuesdays temptation is better.

Its the 4160 sale next Friday...must resist!!

Shrillharridan · 18/11/2020 21:00

calm I just worry that pengaligons are a bit too grown up for me 😬😃

I also worry about the silage...

1frenchfoodie · 18/11/2020 21:15

SOTD DS&Durga Bowmakers, resinous, woody, leather - like opening an old violin case (in my dreams, never made it past recorder and triangle in real life).

I have and love Penhaligon’s Much Ado about the Duke, a delicious woody, deep, velvety rose that I keep describing as opening the box of turkish delights in Narnia. Described as unisex, as are all my FBs, but harder to pull off for a man I’d think. Longlasting too.

Boglins · 18/11/2020 22:24

Carthusia Terra Mia is coffee and hazelnut, I think I got a sample via nose.

I've taken refuge in Jazz Club a lot recently, it's my comfort scent. I've realised though that I don't have many autumn/winter perfumes. I don't really like spicy, Shalimar-type scents and that's what a lot of autumn winter ones seem to be. Any recs for non-spiced but seasonal scents?

Shrillharridan · 19/11/2020 09:02

boglins wow, that coffee and hazelnut scent sounds amazing!
Autumn/winter: non spicy?
Hmmm.
I'd suggest dior addict, chanel coco mademoiselle, tauer ACDD, EL modern muse nuit (you'd need to be ok with patchouli for this one though)
4160 doe in the snow and next cashmere.
Just off the top of my head.
I'm sure there are loads more...

Shrillharridan · 19/11/2020 09:02

Oh and avon!
Timeless, little black dress and soft musk

teta · 19/11/2020 10:18

Sotd is Malle's Lipstick Rose.

Umm @Boglins the ultimate seasonal non spicy for me is Clinique Wrappings. Or for a gentle warm ambery green-tinged incense it's Eau d Iparie by L'Occitane. I can't detect any spice in this even though Fragantica say there is ( they often get it wrong). Apart from that I seem to really like spice as virtually all my winter choices have woody spicy elements.

Penhaligon's were some of my very first perfumes. Violetta, the original Elizabethan Rose, lily of the valley & Orange Blossom. Not avantgarde at all but rather traditional & staid. The new ones I haven't tried. I'm put off by the rather silly names and heads on them. But then I used to really dislike the Montale canisters & refuse to buy them on principal ... only to fall in love with Roses Musk.

I got a couple of penhaligons samples. Loved Oud de nil and would buy if it wasn't so eye wateringly expensive. Hated the something mr Sam - it had a strange smell of foxes. Scrubbed off and ebayed. So yes they have to be tried!

SOTD iso e super. I’m in danger of actually finishing a bottle of it.

FloraMacDonald · 19/11/2020 13:51

Does anyone else get weeks when all perfume seems incredibly weak? Definitely not coronavirus as I can smell it when it goes on! But nothing seems to have any longevity and everything seems so bland. For instance, tried Eau Duelle last week and loved it, today it's just a straight vanilla with no complex notes. I'm convinced it's TOTM related. Bah!

I agree you should get some Penhaligon samples before splashing out on a full bottle. Although, they appear not to have many things in stock for sampling. I fancy trying the new one, Mr Penhaligon but that's not even listed on the samples page.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/11/2020 15:26

SOTD MMM Fireplace again, but I mainly want to tell you about an amazing candle I got today. It's via an Etsy seller, and smells exactly like TF Tobacco Vanille.

www.etsy.com/uk/shop/LittleCandleProject?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=697313494

It's the dark honey and tobacco one.

(The seller is in Scotland, but absolutely no affiliation with them, I saw an ad on Instagram.)

Shrillharridan · 19/11/2020 16:15

Sotd pp by the fireplace
Its weird - I feel like I've got to use up the pp dupe before I can use the real stuff 🤷‍♀️
I'm not going to get any penhaligons samples...I've got my next bloom set coming soon
..

Shrillharridan · 19/11/2020 16:16

I've got loads of candles at so no more for me for now...they look lovely though judy

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/11/2020 16:59

I've not lit it yet, shrill so it might be horrible anyway! It is so like TV though, uncannily similar.

Boglins · 20/11/2020 08:00

Thanks for the suggestions! Will see what I can get samples of!

teta · 20/11/2020 09:32

Jo Malone Nutmeg & Ginger is my Sotd.
It's a decant off eBay and it's so weak. I never know whether these things are genuine or whether reformulations just possess less strength.

@Flora I have that issue too. When I'm tired and overwhelmed I can't smell things properly.

SOTD Black Opium.

teta the only JM scents I feel have any oomph are the horrible Pomegranate Noir, and lovely Red Roses. I have the Wood Sage and Sea Salt, but also have the matching body cream, which it definitely needs.

riotlady · 20/11/2020 16:03

DP bought me a perfume society tester box for my birthday so SOTD is Lune Feline, it’s lovely! We had a great time spraying some of them on tester strips- standout for me was Rook Undergrowth which smells exactly as described, really earthy and minty.
