For a size 10 woman in her early thirties FWIW, thinking of the Oak colour. I keep going back and forth... I want a stylish warm raincoat - is this as good as it gets?

Love the protected species. Sounds fab but very expensive Hmm

MayDayFightsBack · 20/09/2020 03:47

Nope. Shapeless and the colour of diarrhoea.

Userzzz · 20/09/2020 04:15

I think it’s nice but seems a lot if money for what it is, but we all have different budgets. I think the color is great too!

user1497787065 · 20/09/2020 04:19

It's a practical coat rather than a style statement. Perfect for dog walking for me but I'm afraid stylish it is not and I'm in my mid 50s.

Buntyjones · 20/09/2020 04:46

I really like it! I'm 30 and would totally wear that - clearly good quality and the colour is lovely! It'd brighten up a damp autumn/winter day!

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 20/09/2020 05:08

Interesting - I've not seen a coat / tent combo before.

overnightangel · 20/09/2020 05:22

“Shapeless” is exactly the word I was thinking.
You could get much nicer for £150

Fruitshootloop · 20/09/2020 07:25

I quite fancy a Didrikson Luna parka...

I've just bought two new raincoats as my old Joules one was frumpy and I only otherwise had a Mountain Warehouse one for outdoor holidays.

Picked up a nice tan parka in Asda that was previously mentioned on a Mumsnet thread. Plus a navy Uniqlo blocktech coat, thin but great for a school run/walk when it's raining.

Having looked through a load of brands...Rains, Ilse Jacobsen, Didrikson etc, I found the only stylish example was this Protected Species one:

A bit too sport lux for me, but very nice.

Frumpy

bunnyonthemantle · 20/09/2020 09:02

I have this one

Very cheap and wore it in the pouring rain around Torquay and remained dry. Lots of colour options and I like the lining

I’ve got this and I’m early 30s

BlueThistles · 20/09/2020 09:45

I have several SeaSalt coats including the Ochre one OP, they are so warm and waterproof, and I love them, but Im over 50 need waterproofing and warmth as Im walking beaches on the west coast of Scotland. A waterproof unlined trendy looking coat just doesn't make the cut for me and my needs. So if your looking for practical lovely warmth them this SeaSalt coat ticks all the boxes. If your looking at standing at a bus stop waiting on the bus then maybe a lighter raincoat is better for you. I'd go SeaSalt every time. 🌺

TheDaydreamBelievers · 20/09/2020 10:45

I really like the first one @Opalfruitsstrawberry and dont see how its frumpy. I'm 31yrs. It's a parka, they are meant to look warm and slightly "just threw this on" grunge. I wouldn't choose Oak colour but that's because it would not suit my colouring.

I dont see how the second brand is any less 'frumpy' and it looks less warm. The M&S one I dont think is as stylish

pleasestoprainingplease · 20/09/2020 13:51

I've literally just got this coat. I am so sick of being freezing and getting soaked on school runs, in parks, pushing a buggy and unable to hold an umbrella and also standing watching the kids play football every weekend.

I think it's non offensive and with boots or trainers works. It's not too heavy. It looks really well made with good pockets for when I just want to throw my keys and phone in my pocket. I know friends who have had these coats years and still wear theM. I'm really looking forward to staying dry this winter!

I'm early thirties with two kids.

Blondiney · 20/09/2020 19:25

Seasalt as a brand makes me sad .

Didriksons are properly insulated and waterproof and are actually cut with a bit of shape, often with an internal drawstring to bring in the waist.

LightOfAThousandStars · 01/10/2020 10:08

Did you ending up findng the perfect coat OP? Looking for the elusive stylish school run coat myself.

SpikeyBaby · 03/10/2020 17:21

they are meant to look warm and slightly "just threw this on" grunge

Agree completely!

IME the Seasalt coat looks a lot better in real life than in the pics. I have one and, whilst it's never going to be chic, it actually looks pretty good with jeans and trainers / wellies etc. It's great for country walks, dog-walking etc, warm, windproof and waterproof. The big pockets are so handy too.

I wouldn't wear it for a night out, obviously, but for a 'sling on in crappy weather' coat it's the best I've ever had. But I prefer a more relaxed cut in most things and think most belted parkas / raincoats look daft anyway.

willloman · 03/10/2020 17:51

Yes, if you're my 86 year old Aunty.

NanooCov · 03/10/2020 18:13

I have just bought the sea salt one in oak and waiting for it to arrive. Wanted something warm and waterproof for the school run. I'm 43 and a size 18. I don't expect it to be stylish, just practical really.
I have a protected species coat already and wouldn't buy another. Don't think they're worth the money.

SpikeyBaby · 03/10/2020 19:08

@willloman

Yes, if you're my 86 year old Aunty.
Seriously, can we just stop with the constant fucking ageism on here?
Frappuccinofan · 03/10/2020 19:16

I think it depends on your budget and how many other coats/jackets you own. If it’s one of several and you want to wear this only for certain occasions whilst you cycle through your other options, go for it. If it’s going to be your only coat I think you can find something better.

I don’t think it’s stylist or fashionable, but it is functional. I wouldn’t personally wear it but I’m 10 years younger than you and it doesn’t suit my style.

doingmeheadin · 03/10/2020 19:36

Pretty much everyone on MN thinks seasalt and protected species are great. However, protected species are very thin, strange sizes and not worth the money. Seasalt are practical, not very stylish but good value and not offensive. Essentially, I'd say don't take style advice from MN as they don't come across as the most style conscious bunch. If you are early 30s and no kids (ie no buggy pushing /school run) go for style plus brolly and you won't go far wrong!

WiserOwl · 03/10/2020 19:40

i would avoid seasalt. They're too long. Which looks so frumpy unless you're over 5'8

CottonSock · 03/10/2020 19:48

I found the fit and cut much nicer on didricksons parka I got half price in Cotswold outdoor shop sale. Totally waterproof. Scandi quality.
