For a size 10 woman in her early thirties FWIW, thinking of the Oak colour. I keep going back and forth... I want a stylish warm raincoat - is this as good as it gets?

Well I like it. It's warm, covers you well, waterproof, good for walking the dog and fine for going out and about
Order it or find a seasalt shop and try it on - you can always send it back.

HerNameWasEliza · 13/09/2020 22:12

My friend has one of these and the rest of us covet it! We are late 40's/ early 50's though so probably a lot more mumsy than you.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 13/09/2020 22:17

I think you may need two coats. A really practical waterproof one for wet and cold days, and a smarter wool one for crisp, bright days.

ItsmineAllmine · 13/09/2020 22:23

@mistermagpie

I go on about this on every thread about waterproof coats but look at the Arcteryx Patera Parka. Goretex AND down filled (a very rare combination!) and pretty smart looking for an outdoor type coat, with a great hood and minimal branding.

It is serious serious money but I've had mine for two years and absolutely love it. Mine is navy and it works for most occasions bar very smart things, it's such a great jacket.

Just googled this - £550?! Shock

I prefer 10000 mm.

But 5000mm is okay.

Nice enough coat, but not cheap.

PegasusReturns · 13/09/2020 23:08

If you’re really interested in how you look then it’s virtually impossible to find one coat that does it all.

I have a Protected Species commuter (plus the trench) for rainy days
A Max Mara wool coat for cold ish dry days and
A proper down coat for when it’s really cold

As an owner of a Superdry waterproof Parka, I can say they are great quality and generally look pretty stylish - I work in a high school and my students seem to approve. It keeps me dry on lunch duty in the playground all through the winter.

Haveca look on here. My DP just bought a coat from them and it’s lovely. Nice understated logo too.

I like the cost but personally not the mustard colour.

Goatinthegarden · 14/09/2020 06:42

My friend recently got this from FatFace. It’s not normally my style but I really liked it as a practical raincoat. She got blue, I would go for brown.

I always get my coats from Wallis. I was surprised when I discovered they have a great selection that are flattering, fashionable and warm so might be worth you taking a look.

Midnightsky1 · 14/09/2020 07:13

I like it especially the fleecy lining but I am a lot older than you.

shesellsseashells99 · 14/09/2020 07:27

LOVE it and very practical. Dont think it looks frumpy at all.

DeathMetalMum · 14/09/2020 07:29

I like the lighthouse brand. I have a summer rain coat by target dry who make both brand and it's lasted well. Similar but looks a little more fitted than the original coat.

Oh, man, just gone to the Ilse Jacobsen site. This is so where I am buying my next raincoat! I love Mumsnet.

Seasalt and Protected Species are loved on MN, I can't see the appeal.

Neither can I. Made worse by the fact that so many people seem to want to wear exactly the same thing.

aafwan · 15/09/2020 19:33

I think the Seasalt and the protected species ones look very drab stylewise. I really like the Sweaty Betty one that Othering has linked.

user1493494961 · 15/09/2020 19:53

It's expensive for what it is.

Before you spend your money, please be aware that it won't be very waterproof - it's only 5000mm.

Speaking as an ex-outdoorswear retail manager, you want at least 10,000mm, ideally more. I wear jackets that are waterproof to 20,000mm and they keep me dry all day when I'm outside walking dogs.

If you're only popping into town they'll likely be okay, though.

Yep, wish more people were aware of waterproof ratings - not all waterproofs are equal. 5000mm won't do much to keep the rain out for long in this country.
BorsetshireBlueBalls · 15/09/2020 20:26

@vanillandhoney
ah, good tip. So which brands do you recommend? (that are as nice-looking as Ilse - see, there was I thinking Danish meant top waterproofing - I really like that coat, would love it in the pink. But I already have sufficient waterproofing for nipping into the shops. I'd like something better than the grubby black thing I picked up in Norfolk, and I will be walking the dog, rather than yomping over Dartmoor).
