For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

@botemp yes that’s what I actually meant- thanks for putting it into the correct words! I will look up the Frezyderm.🙂

I was rather pleased today when my 15 year old daughter who is very highly critical of everything at the moment and not that easy to be around, took a second to look up from her computer and tell me my skin looked glowing- before returning to the screen. I asked if that was good. She said yes, the light is on the right place. Thanks to p50 I think.

70sduvet · 01/03/2021 21:09

Bo thanks for that. I seem to have the same type of KP as you, and the laziness ahem about body moisturiser. Its either too early, too late, too cold or I'm too full of excusesSmile

The appeal from your results is that it went away which gives me the nudge to try it. Atm I just put up with it, I dont like the look of it but I'm mostly too lazy to care until mid June when I panic about "summer season" frantically scrub and moisturise for a few weeks....and then sit looking out at the rain until Sept

As you thought no of course I can't buy it for a reasonable €6 a tube. Its about £20. BUT I'm thinking..... its a reasonable gamble against the more expensive glycolic creams that do need the whole reapplication thing. And if it doesn't work. Meh!

I'll try a tube or two on my upper arms. It's not a massive expense. Just not €6

On sunscreen. I think I'm keen to try the Eucerin as I do like their other products.
And are any of you lot still loving frezyderm?

70sduvet · 01/03/2021 21:11

Bigbuttons that is a compliment!!!! P50 is magical Star

70sduvet · 01/03/2021 21:12

I just missed the comments before mine which were talking about Frezyderm. Whoops.

SallieSallow · 01/03/2021 21:38

I still love Frezyderm, I use both the clear & tinted depending where I’m going & what I’m doing, or sometimes a mixture of both. I wish bioderma would bring their spray back for top ups Sad I don’t mind the LRP one but agree Bo it’s that bit heavier than Bioderma. I’m using up my Purito SPF as a daytime moisturiser & will probably continue until the weather gets properly warm by which time my stockpile should be gone.

I’ve just ordered some cosmetic grade Vit c powder as in desperation I’m going to have a go at making my own Shock I’ve also had to re-order P50 as can’t live without my foetus skin Grin

I’m not using tret at the moment as cancelled S&M and dermatica subscriptions due to being between houses, might go back to retirides when & if my supplier can get to Spain again.

I still really want a Bear 🐻 but trying to hold out till I’m fully moved unless I see a great deal anywhere.

BigButtons · 01/03/2021 22:00

@SallieSallow I make my own c serum from an ESD recipe. It’s very easy to do. I like to know that what I am using is fresh and I know exactly what’s in it. They have great diy recipes on there from people who really know their stuff🙂

trunumber · 01/03/2021 22:10

Hi everyone,
Excuse me jumping in with a question, I started to read the thread but realised I have no idea what it all means.

I realised today (in an 8 hour long zoom training session) that my skin is unpleasant. Some small spots (easily resolved, I've been treating my skin terribly and eating loads of junk food) but it's also seems to be a scarred from the days when I had acne.

I feel like something acid-y might possibly help with the scaring ... But what specifically am I looking for? Any recommendations?

botemp · 02/03/2021 10:29

What's ESD? I know labmuffin does a simple one that you can make safely as long as you use it up quickly, I'm just not convinced with the DIY as you don't get the benefit from ferulic acid and Vitamin E (which I understand are not easy to formulate).

Duvet, that's a bit of a markup, but as I mentioned I'm really not sure if I just grew out of it, which happens with KP or that the a303 frightened the shit out of it. I did get prescribed prescription tretinoin for my KP once and that made it go dormant for a good number of years too.

Trunumber acne scarring is a rather wide description of a lot of things. It's entirely depends on how old the scarring is, whether it's ice pick, rolling, boxcar, keloid, etc. Anything that's been there for a long time and hasn't faded is unlikely to change as it's essentially healed and you'd need to see a specialist for treatments like microneedling, laser, targeted filler, etc. Theoretically microneedling or stamping can be done at home but there's a lot due diligence necessary and you have to use shorter needles than a practitioner would to keep it safe. Anyhow, unless we're talking still healing acne like PIH or PIE acids are not going to do anything for acne scarring.

trunumber · 02/03/2021 10:53

Thanks Botemp - it's over 20 years old so definitely old scarring. I shall return to better foundation instead then. Thank you for your straight forward answer

BigButtons · 02/03/2021 11:52

@botemp it’s essential spa day- a really great forum for all things skin/ beauty/ diy.
The one I make has ferulic acid and vit E in too. The ferulic acid needs to be dissolved in an alcohol base first.

BigButtons · 02/03/2021 11:59

Sorry it’s this site- got the words mixed up!
www.essentialdayspa.com/forum/

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 02/03/2021 15:42

@trunumber - no one ever looks good in a zoom meeting!!

One thing that may be worth considering, and I don't know what area you're in, but my local NHS hospital offers laser treatment privately for cosmetic reasons, and have found that it's probably the cheapest around comparing it to salons and come quasi medical clinics.

Plus you feel like you're contributing to the NHS. :)

trunumber · 02/03/2021 15:56

SmileAh thanks ilovemydog, to be honest I'm incredibly lazy when it comes to grooming and don't actually care enough to do something serious about it. A quick wipe with an acid type toner I would have gone with but I'm not bothered enough for anything else

Thank you though Smile

botemp · 02/03/2021 16:27

trunumber, it really depends on how deep they are but you could consider prescription tretinoin through either Dermatica or Skin+Me, it can help with textural issues to a certain degree. There's also a beauty filter on zoom Wink

Ah, yes, BigButtons, essential day spa, I think that's been around since forever hasn't it? I often end up there when googling something specific. (I tend to think of it as the will try anything bonkers on my face forum).

OP posts:
BigButtons · 02/03/2021 16:33

@botemp yea it can be a bit like that sometimes and has been around forever!
It has a very good section on diy formulations though with specific percentages. So a bit more than a splash and a dash of this and that. Some are very simple and others more hideously complicated. There are some very experienced and knowledgeable posters but I haven’t joined in for quite some while. I sit somehow where in the middle diy wise 😀.

Tsmummy08 · 02/03/2021 16:36

Hi all

Just thought I'd add some more SPFs to the list....

I've been using up Purito as an "indoor" SPF but others in rotation are:

Skin Aqua Super moisture gel (very light) and milk (moisturising, probably too much for greasy/combo skins)

Frezyderm (both)

Neostrata mineral tinted (I'll use that in the summer if using tret then)

Darphin Intral (mineral and very slightly tinted). I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone recommend this before but thought I'd have a go when SpaceNK were doing an offer. It's eye-wateringly expensive for a tiny bottle but feels very luxe. Very moisturising rather than greasy like other mineral SPFs tend to be (SkinCeuticals), definitely no good for oily skins and doesn't leave a white cast but does have a v light tint so may not work for dark tones. I'll use this more over the next few months - not sure how I feel about it yet, will report back!

70sduvet · 02/03/2021 19:26

Wow just had a look at the EDS website. I thought I was sailing close to the sun with my Neostrata adventure.

PEOPLE ARE SELF INJECTING FILLER!

(I hope there are photos.... is that bad Blush)

I now have a lot of reading material for tonight. And will remain on the sane side of completely bonkers, but maybe get a few tips

SallieSallow · 02/03/2021 22:05

I’m off to check out EDS now Grin

The Vit c powder I got just said to mix a scoop with a non-oily serum like hyaluronic acid which is about all I have time for right now. It was only £6 so will tide me over till I settle on a new one to try. Still living in hope the timeless one might come back to the U.K. if it was something to do with EU regulations that stopped them selling it here.

botemp · 03/03/2021 09:24

They also do those plasma blast treatments on themselves and those fat dissolving injections. Probably not representative for the forum as a whole, but, yeah bonkers. There's also a bonkers YouTuber like that who is slowly destroying her skin and it looks so painful. Surprisingly enough, despite the bonkers element and being a very attractive woman she doesn't get a lot of views but occasionally she pops up in my suggested and I cry out in horror with what she's doing to herself now.

Sallie, it's not the ordinary one is it? It's really no good to be slap dash mixing Vitamin c into whatever, get a jewelry scale and some denatured water from the supermarket and you can easily do Labmuffin's weekly recipe. Maybe baking soda and pH strips were required too, can't remember, but it wasn't much effort aside from ordering the stuff.

OP posts:
ilovemydogandMrObama · 03/03/2021 13:21

@Tsmummy08 and @botemp - What was the end result in the Purito scandal? Last I read they were looking into the issue and sending to an independent lab?

70sduvet · 03/03/2021 17:07

Sallie I make the labmuffin recipe
You need baking soda - supermarket
Distilled water I can get this from the chemist
PH strips - amazon (I use urine testing strips that have pH on them as we have them for DS in bulk, prob real pH strips are better)
And then the ascorbic acid that you have.

It's simple to make. It just goes off quite quickly. I put it in a small spray bottle wrapped in tin foil.

It's fine, grand, OK.
I prefer the ordinary 23% but everyone seems to hate it. I'm waiting for the medik8 CE pure as I want to try the glutathione along with the Neostrata pigment gel on my hyperpigmentation.

Might try it on my body if I can be bothered. There's a small window here where the heating will still be on in the morning and spritzing after a shower could be bearable. DH was already waffling about turning it off now its March. It was 2 degrees this morning Angry

SallieSallow · 03/03/2021 20:03

Bo I got the Vit C from active formulas, their customer support messaged me with instructions about mixing it with a serum, apparently it comes with a little measuring scoop so no slap dashing Grin

I’ve got most of the stuff needed for the lab muffin recipe though (apart from the strips) so will give that a go, thank you for the review 70s

botemp · 03/03/2021 20:31

Doesn't active formulas do a vitamin c serum themselves?

For my fellow packaging obsessives, I don't care about what's in them, I want some. (I might fall victim to Swedish hand wash although I doubt it's all that sustainable getting that sent to me from Sweden when my current handwash is manufactured locally, even if it's powdered, but THAT bottle).

OP posts:
botemp · 03/03/2021 20:32

Sorry, I don't know how the Purito story ended, AFAIK they're blaming the manufacturer and investigating.

OP posts:
BabyPigeon · 04/03/2021 10:58

Was the purito problem for all their sunscreens? Even the comfy water mineral ones? I still have one unopened. For some reason I thought it was just the one with centella in the name...
I always thought the Korean sun screens are better than the others. Also Australian sunscreen...
