So I saw this referenced on another thread and thought it might be nice to try as my wardrobe is overflowing, mostly of things that are too small.

The concept is basically to use 33 items (including outerwear, accessories, and shoes, but excluding sleepwear and gym kit) for 3 months.

I'm putting together my list for autumn and 33 items actually goes a long way. I need a mix of smart casual and casual with one 'formal' outfit. My style is alternative.

Has anyone done this before? Anyone want to join me?

I would also go off-list for a holiday.

I'm really enjoying this capsule thing - it has inspired (forced) me to pair some of my things differently and I'm finding really cool combinations on Pinterest that I want to try - such as brogues with leather leggings. I would never have thought of wearing those two items together, but it looks really nice.

I may not do capsules in the future, but I think it's a good way to learn about what I like wearing, getting more use out of my clothes and thinking about what kind of items/quality I want to buy.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 07/09/2020 20:49

It's really made getting ready in the morning easy I have to say. I used to spend ages deciding what to wear.

Agree about going off-list for holiday!

Here's yesterday's and today's. Bag won't be used today as I'm going nowhere. First time I've repeated an outfit, and today is day 13 for me I think.

Have a meeting in the office tomorrow and think I might want a formal jacket, which I don't have on my list, and don't particularly want to add to the list for the sake of one day. So I may cheat!

Today I'm in a faux leather midi pencil skirt and a white silk blouse with pleats down the front, and my usual gold jewellery. Nike trainers when going out.

Maybe it's a bit dressy for a Tuesday where the most exciting thing I'll be doing is chasing a toddler in the park, but when else will I be able to dress up?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/09/2020 19:08

Risk It
That sounds lovely. I didn't put my faux leather skirts on this list, because I thought it might still be too warm for them. I'll add both pencil and midi ones when I change things over in a couple of weeks (only sticking, or mostly sticking, to this list for Sept).

Today was a dress (which I didn't love, but which I'll keep on for now), a black jacket (there's a pattern here) and black shoes. It was okay, but definitely not my favourite. The dress needed heels really.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 12/09/2020 17:23

I've got a faux leather mini skirt that I really like wearing but its a bit short. I have to confess I've come back from my break and looked at my items and felt a bit bored :/ Which is odd because the whole reason I wanted to do this was because I was wearing the same t shirts and jeans over and over!

I might try planning out a few days of outfits next week in advance.

OP posts:
RiskIt4Biscuit · 13/09/2020 13:02

Hope you had a nice break.
Annoying that you're feeling a bit bored with the items. Did you pick a lot of items you don't usually wear and did you leave out some of your most worn items?

I've tried to pick items that are out of my comfort zone and that would challenge me a bit - I have not worn skirts and dresses much, and prefer trousers, but have found I feel bored of jeans and a jumper, which used to be my go-to outfit, and I feel far better in the outfits with dresses, skirts and leather leggings.

Today may be the exception though - I'm in a Gerard Darel silk dress, but it is quite shapeless and just looks like a sack, unless I have a jacket over - and it's just too hot today for that.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/09/2020 15:14

I unfortunately didn't have a huge amount of choice due to weight gain (which I'm working on slowly), but prior to this I was just picking up the first t shirt and pair of jeans that came to my hands with no real thought so it is surprising me that I'm now a little bored :/

I got rid of quite a few bits that were tatty but I have a really huge amount of clothing that does not fit and that is quite depressing tbh!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 16/09/2020 17:04

Well this heatwave has kinda thrown things a bit, I confess to getting a pair of shorts out.

OP posts:
penpotted · 17/09/2020 15:57

@LivingDeadGirlUK I've also got a pair of sandals and a couple of straps tops out. Otherwise sticking to it Smile

RiskIt4Biscuit · 17/09/2020 16:12

I've bought some bodysuits to wear underneath wrap dresses and so on, as I feel the dresses were a bit too revealing.

I'm not going to add them to the list, but will probably just class them as underwear, as I wouldn't wear them without something on top.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 17/09/2020 16:36

Yes @RiskIt4Biscuit I've got some vests that I only wear for modesty so are classed as underwear.

Month 1 over, how we all doing?

I've come out the month wanting to buy some extra bits :/ I feel like I need some smarter knitware and a couple of nice dresses.

I've really noticed how I dont have the perfect version of some staples like black trousers too.

Dressing has been much easier but I did get stuck on weeks where I had more than a couple formal occasions.

OP posts:
ToManderleyAgain · 01/10/2020 07:00

Well, what were your reasons for taking the challenge on? If it was with the aim of simplifying your life, then sure, sub in some nicer knitwear and the perfect black trousers, so that your wardrobe works for you. Then you can carry on the challenge feeling good about it.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 01/10/2020 10:57

@ToManderleyAgain I'm struggling with the search for the perfect black trousers but I won't give up!

I started this because I had a wardrobe bursting at the seams with clothes I never wore, or that didn't fit. Had a very therapeutic clear out at the beginning and this project helped me focus the mind a bit as I just looked at the one season and everything else has gone into storage to be dealt with at the appropriate time.

OP posts:
RiskIt4Biscuit · 01/10/2020 11:37

I've really been enjoying this.

I feel far better about my clothes as I picked the items I really like and feel good in, and I am making an effort to style them by tucking and cuffing, using a belt and jewellery.

I have learnt a lot about the clothes I like wearing, and what I actually wear: Surprisingly, I really enjoy a faux leather skirt and would like more. I really like wrap dresses, but not dresses that are loose-fitting. I prefer skinny jeans to straight leg. I love prints on scarves, but don't reach for printed tops and dresses.
I wear trainers most days as I walk several miles.

Now it is getting colder, I will be changing some items (such as a denim jacket), and there are items that are getting too big, so will replace them as well. I have found replacements in my existing wardrobe.
I would like to add items that I have not used a lot in the past, such as a tweed jacket and see if I actually use it, and the season surely is right for it now.

The only issue I have had has been if I've been behind on laundry, and I have "cheated" a bit a few days by wearing items not on the list.
But I don't actually think it's a bad thing as it's a matter of learning about what I like, wear and need - and frankly, why be so strict that it becomes a chore, rather than fun?

I am definitely going to keep making capsule wardrobes.

RiskIt4Biscuit · 01/10/2020 11:38

Wow that was a long post.

Thanks LivingDead for starting this thread!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 09/10/2020 13:36

I was hoping to have lost a bit of weight but alas its stayed the same (better than the upward trend of lockdown though).

I've made a couple of changes, I have swapped in an A line Leather skirt that sits at knee length, hoping this will be good for work and casual.

There is now a cameo jacket added, I think this is only going to be good for another month though as its not hugely warm.

I've taken out the Fat face dress as I've just not worn it. I really like it and am not sure why I've not been reaching for it tbh. Think its just a bit too low cut for work.

Other than that been happy with my choices and going to plow on.

I did wear something off plan today though, decided that 'dress up Fridays' are now a thing, in contrast to my offices dress down Fridays before covid. So yeah I'm sat here in a nice frock lol

Hey all, just coming back to check in. And also to thank you @LivingDeadGirlUK for starting this challenge.

I'm now nearly 2 months in, started on 25 August. I've added in an extra pair of jeans and an extra jumper. If I'm being totally honest, I have had a few days where I felt bored of what I was wearing. I think more accessories might help with this.

But overall, I'm not missing most of my clothes and I've not spent anything on clothes in nearly two months which is almost unheard of. Its taken a lot of the thought out of dressing and my wardrobe is so organised and stress free! It's actually now sparked me to try out a total "no discretionary spend" month, so it's sparked a second journey of minimalism.

Hope everyone else is doing well Smile

RiskIt4Biscuit · 20/10/2020 10:31

Thanks for bumping this!

I'm still doing this as well, and I intend on continuing for as long as I can.

My list has changed because of the weather and weight loss, and I do add other items as I have them and want to use them (scarves and jewellery, for example).

I have definitely learnt something about what I like wearing and what I actually wear (although I still have heels on my list and I really only wear trainers at the moment) and I think more about cuffing sleeves and trousers and tucking tops, which I think makes outfits look more thought-out.

My biggest issue with this is laundry - I feel like I need to do laundry more often, but it's not a big deal.

I really am enjoying this, and I enjoy getting dressed in a different way - shopping my wardrobe rather than buying new, trying new combinations and styling things differently.

Thanks again @LivingDeadGirlUK for creating this thread - it's been an eye-opener and a really fun challenge for me.
