Do you “dress your age”?

I’ve always been adamant that I will wear what makes me feel good and that the whole “you are too old to wear that” is misogynist bullshit.

However.

I’m in my mid 40s, overweight. I’m going to a garden party in a few weeks for a friends 40th.

I bought a dress from H&M which makes me happy. It’s pink and flowery, short with puff sleeves. I was going to pair it with a pink belt and some ankle boots. It’s not the most flattering style for my shape but I generally don’t care about looking fat, I am who I am. But I’ve suddenly got a pang of concern that I look like I’m trying to dress like a skinny young thing and I just look old fat and ridiculous.

Am I there? Am I suddenly at a “you are too old to wear that” place?

What should a fat 40 something wear to a garden party? I kinda never grew up and still dress like a child 😂

I’m 54. I like soft fabrics, so that dictates my clothing choices. My current favourite clothing is from BAM and Hush just because it’s soft and comfortable. I’ve always been the same about fabric, so really my choices haven’t changed much.

I’m 27 and probably dress “old” for my age- love Boden (so many of the dresses have pockets!!) and may own a waterfall cardigan or two.

I have some very sensible Clark’s shoes for work and they’re so comfy I’m wondering if I could get away with them outside of work

Anyway, go for what makes you happy!

I think of you like it, if it makes you happy to wear, then you should wear it.

My mum is 50 and I'm 30, we still share clothes. She does have a few bits I wouldn't wear and visa versa, but broadly, we wear very similar clothes.

@KetoWinnie

My mum also longs for me to get a short ladies hairdoo.

So stupid. It is only an inch past my shoulders

I’m 50. My mom hates my short hair do. Personally I can see nothing wrong with a grade 2 all over...

I don't know what dress like a 45 year old looks like. I dress nicely. For me, the line is not to dress in ways that look like I'm competing with my 14 year old daughter. So no mini skirts, no boob tubes, no chokers. Anything outside of that is fine.

FraughtwithGin · 15/07/2020 19:48

I will be 62 in 2 months. I have no idea how to dress 62 & I am not sure I want to know. I dress fairly classically in mostly cotton, cashmere, silk and linen. I shop at LK Bennett, Hobbs, Pure Collection, Jigsaw, COS with the odd designer item from DVF, Tory Burch, Stefanel, 120%Lino or Erdem. No visible grey or white hair yet, but that is genetic.
I don't think I dress my age.

KetoIFWinnie · 16/07/2020 08:03

With a 62 year old, what is going to flatter is going to differ so enormously depending on how fat/ slim she is. Same as for 50. Im aware im 50 but feel i have a little more leeway when im slim.

Still regretting not buying white boots for summer!
I had white boots at 12!

Been caring for a couple of 20 year old female patients who don't tuck their tops in as they have bigger tums like me.... so not all younger women tuck in their tops

I don't dress my age, and don't even know how you are supposed to dress for a certain age, and who makes the rules.

I am 78,and this may conjure up all sorts of things, that you are supposed to wear. I am fairly slim, my arms and shoulders are toned, and no flapping bingo wings, my legs are slim, so I can wear lovely strappy summer dresses and tops in the Summer.

My tastes in clothes, are a bit of a throw back to the 1960 era, I loved a few hippy type things, and also glamorous evening wear, for parties and ballroom dancing.

@KetoWinnie my point is simply why concern yourself with what other people think. HTH Hmm
