I wanted to love the Teva sandals I ordered

I ordered the hurricane drift in black and the Universal Original in white from ASOS.

I have size 6, wide feet.

I didn’t like the look of the hurricane drift as they were very plasticky, but they looked dreadful on. The Universal looked better but again, the footbed was a weird shape and stuck out round my foot. I should have taken a photo to demonstrate but I repacked them in horror and hot footed it to the post office for returning.

Are you meant to size down? Did I order the wrong styles/colours? The models online manage to make them look cool, I looked like a clown with a penchant for hiking. 😫

I found this too. They look so cool in the pic, but mine look really kind of basic and cheap. I don’t mind the sticking-out footbed.

However I’ve kept mine with a view to pimping them up with some bright trim and making them more kind of sports-sandal style. But they aren’t what I thought they were.

MikeUniformMike · 06/07/2020 19:41

No idea, but I bought some Teva sandals once and they were too narrow. They wouldn't fasten around my feet.
I wear Birkenstock sandals, and size down quite a lot. Size no longer visible on shoe, but I think I went down a size and a half. If I got more Birks. I'd get the ones that look like arizonas but with a heel strap.

fizzpopbang123 · 06/07/2020 20:03

I find Teva true to size. I haven't tried the hurricanes but have the originals in white and black. I think they are supposed to be stuck out around your foot as you put it. The straps are actually inset so it would be impossible for your foot to completely fill the sole.

I find them insanely comfortable but the best thing is being able to bung them in the washing machine. The white ones look like new after nearly three summers.

nanbread · 06/07/2020 20:14

I would say they're ever so slightly in the big side - I'm a 5.5 but wear a 5 in them.

Personally I can't see how many people can carry off the white... I wonder if that's part of the problem?

Mine are black (but with a patterned strap as didn't want the starkness of pure black either as it wouldn't suit me) and generally I think the black is cooler and recedes whereas white stands out. The footbed thing has never occurred to me.

I think they look best with slightly cropped, wider trousers or jeans, can't quite make them work with skirts or shorts or slim cut jeans.

opinionatedfreak · 06/07/2020 21:03

I wear them all the time in the summer - I have two pairs this year - red hurricanes and a pair of original in the recycled webbing colour way.

Maybe I don't care enough what my feet look like - I wear slim fit chino's most days.

Squiz81 · 06/07/2020 21:25

I’m glad I’m not the only one @JoysOfString !

I think you are right @nanbread the white seemed so bright. I think I will try and order the patterned ones, I really want to like them as they were comfy. The foam sole confused me as well, I’ve read on here people saying they lasted years and years, I don’t equate that with foam soles! Not saying I don’t believe them, it’s just not exactly what I was expecting.

@opinionatedfreak I just don’t want them to stand out, I don’t really like my feet. I bet yours look good with chinos, that’s a look I’ve seen a lot online. Have you got nice petite feet though? Mine just looked huge in them. Im probably over thinking it!

opinionatedfreak · 06/07/2020 21:30

No! I’ve got big size 8s.

I’m 5’7” and my feet are in proportion with me.

To channel Trinny & Susannah from years ago I have big bones. I am overweight but even at my slimmest i don’t think I would be smaller than a 14.

I have a friend who is the same height but has tiny feet (size 3 or 4). Her hands are also petite. I will never ever be the same size as her.

Blackcurrant66 · 06/07/2020 21:36

They’re so comfortable and really last because as stated above you can put them in the machine and so they don’t go all smelly and sticky like other sandals do if you wear them lots.

XingMing · 06/07/2020 21:41

I like the look, but not the fit, of Tevas. Instead, I bought the Joseph Riker equivalent two years ago, and have just replaced them with an identical pair, because the inner sole wore through and rubbed. I walk about 5-8k daily with dog, and the Rieker sandals wade through water, never slip and mostly don't let the twigs between my toes. In an odd way, because they are so practical in style, they actually look very cool with jeans, shorts and maxi-skirts.

Squiz81 · 06/07/2020 21:50

This photo illustrates what I mean about so much footbed showing. I Think I’ve spent so long picking shoes which make my feet look less wide it’s messing with my mind having a shoe that widens them 😅

Thanks @XingMing I’ll check them out

I’ve ordered two more pairs in black, am going to try a size 5. I want these to work 😅

Following as I’ve been looking at the hurricane in white or the original in black. DH thinks they are both equally ugly so I sent him a photo of the fur lined ones Grin

UltimateWednesday · 07/07/2020 10:08

I have the original leather sandals thay are oh so comfortable but very ugly.

I have since tried many of their "prettier" styles and none have been at all comfy.

Squiz81 · 07/07/2020 11:41

@MulberryPeony I’ll add a photo of my feet once these black ones arrive 😄

I had some originals almost 30 years ago! Wish I’d kept them lol.

PAND0RA · 07/07/2020 23:35

I have Teva Verra sandals in mid green colour with a grey footbed, which is relatively subtle. I find both the black and white soles to be quite obtrusive.

I have very very narrow feet and the soles don’t stick out much at all. They look a lot like this on me (not my photo).

Squiz81 · 08/07/2020 10:29

@PAND0RA the sole on those look more durable than the foamy ones on the originals. They actually look better with a foot in too. I’ve seen them online, with just a photo of the shoe and they haven’t looked good. I reckon with the right outfit they could look quite cool 😎

Try Merrill sandals I have some lovely ones, comfy, look good and practical.

EBearhug · 08/07/2020 10:41

I love my Tevas. They have been round the world with me, camping in the Serengeti and the jungle in Borneo. I have walked I don't know how many miles in them. The wide footbed is to help protect your foot in wilder terrain.

I am beginning to need to replace my second pair, after buying my first pair in about 1996/1997, so they've been good value for money, 2 pairs in over two decades, and some heavy wear out of both pairs.

Squiz81 · 08/07/2020 11:42

Love that @EBearhug! It’s nice when you have stories attached to your stuff. Interesting about the wide footbed too. That is good value and makes the price tags on some of the Tevas ive seen seem a bit more reasonable! I hope they are equally sturdy now, sometimes when something becomes a fashion item they can become less durable 🤨

I got the leather ones from Toast last year and I love them but they did take a bit of getting used to.

SmileyClare · 08/07/2020 11:51

I don't know if this is helpful but I don't think sandals ever look good in black or white. It's too in your face Hello I'm wearing big practical sandals.

If you're wearing them for serious walking then that's different from just wanting nice sandals to go with an outfit.

MulberryPeony · 08/07/2020 13:33

I’ve now been looking at the flat form version. Someone needs to talk me down (pardon the pun). I’m thinking if I’m going to go for ugly sandals I may as well go big or go home!

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 08/07/2020 14:18

Last year I got the previous version of these in khaki, they are leather with a decent sole and still look quite cool (to those that think Tevas are cool -I'm aware some people hate them).

That made me laugh! All the print ones I liked were priced higher than i wanted to pay 😬. I’m still waiting for the black ones I ordered to arrive, although I guess there’s no rush for me needing sandals in this weather!
