Thank you so much for all your brilliant suggestions. I'm aware the last thread is running out, so I've added a new one, just in case we have any more suggestions from a bygone era, or we want to review any new purchases (I have loads on order at the moment!). Thanks to @kojolo for the thread title. Here's the link to the old one: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/3944582-To-realise-I-like-old-lady-things

Don’t mind me, just placemarking!

Secret love of Rosamund Pilcher with a cup of earl grey here Blush

Thanks for the kimono tips! Grin
Anyone else making lavender bags soon? Loads in our front garden here and they last years!

wildthingsinthenight · 12/07/2020 15:50

Yes currently looking for nice vintage material for lavender bags JeSuis

Now need to look at The Japanese Shop...👀👀👀

Love this thread and I’ve read the whole of the last one recently. I’m 34 and I’ve been an old lady since I was a child and this thread has given me some great ideas. I’ve just purchased 2 merino thermal vests for £10 each in the sale from Pashley and looking forward to wearing them this winter. Also going to buy some new soaps and find some Agatha Christie books for my kindle which I will read with a nice cup of tea and some biscuits.

MotherofPearl · 12/07/2020 18:42

I made a lemon drizzle cake this afternoon. I find having a homemade cake in my retro cake tin makes everything feel more bearable. Though my 3 DC have already made some inroads...

Wauden · 12/07/2020 19:29

Ooh, lavender bags would be lovely. There are some large bushes in my area and, inspired by old ladies who take cuttings and seeds from the gardens of stately homes Grin, I might find that some lavender heads mysteriously end up in my pocket. A cardigan pocket Grin

NannyOgg66 · 12/07/2020 20:52

@KatherineParr4 there are some lovely designs on there. My budget hasn't run to silk! I'm not sure if the silk ones are dry clean only, generally I take no notice of dry clean only labels and just hand wash, however with something as expensive and beautiful as a kimono I wouldn't chance it! There is a lady on Ebay who sells silk kimonos I'm not sure of her user
name. Quite often you can pick them up there new.
@motherofPearl ooh lemon drizzle, lovely! I love baking but husband and I are getting fat so had to cut down Grin

SirVixofVixHall · 12/07/2020 21:53

Made my DH and daughters large mugs of Ovaltine last night, yum.

JeSuisPoulet · 13/07/2020 09:31

Wauden shame you don't live near me as I regularly leave bundles out for people to take. I did some more yesterday but feel bad for the bees. so will give it another couple of days I think.

Whenwillow · 13/07/2020 13:32

This thread makes me so happy! I have found my people ❤️

Whenwillow · 13/07/2020 14:40

I've just downloaded a Rosamund Pilcher. I've read a few of my mum's a few years back and thoroughly enjoyed them. I'd forgotten though, so thanks for the reminder.
I also need a new nightie. I did once have a lovely Victorian one from Past Times, so I think I may have a look at the sites posted above.
I love Yardley scents too!

Babysharkdoodoodood · 13/07/2020 15:01

@MotherofPearl I made a lo carb lemon cake the other day with a cream cheese frosting. Had to portion it and ration DH and myself to 1slice per day or would defeat the object of low carb.

I love cardies. Especially with hot flushes. Easier to yank off in emergencies than a sweater. And yes to pockets.

wildthingsinthenight · 13/07/2020 15:14

Babyshark would you mind posting the recipe for that lemon cake please. Sounds like something I need in my life! I try to eat low carb

Elasticatedwaist · 13/07/2020 15:41

Can anyone advise me on size for the Powell craft nighties ? They say they are one size. Not sure if they would drown me , i am 5ft 1 , size 8 . I really want one now 😀

Bluesparkled · 13/07/2020 16:31

I bought a wafty nightie from Zara- gorgeous but really big, though I don’t normally find that with them.
I have spent the afternoon hanging bundles of herbs to dry and collecting seeds from the garden like my Mum.
Has anyone ever come across the Silver Petticoat reviews? Coincidentally found recently and it’s very satisfactory- romance reviews, film, books etc but with certain conditions- no vulgar language, no on screen sex etc. Nicely old lady. You can enjoy a good cup of tea as you read, no nasty shocks!

MotherofPearl · 13/07/2020 19:20

@Elasticatedwaist

The Powell Craft nightdresses are pretty roomy. I'm a 8-10 (6-8 on my top half!) and they are big on me, but I am 5 ft 7 so no issues with the length. I find them very comfortable because I dislike close-fitting nightwear. In your case I think you might need to take the hem up though. Grin

Servings 8

Calories 336kcal
4 eggs large
1/2 cup / 120g sour cream
1/2 cup / 120g butter, softened
1/4 cup / 4 tbsp lemon juice
zest of 1 lemon
2 cup / 200g almond flour or ground almonds / NOT super-fine almond flour!!!! 2 tsp baking powder
1/3 cup / 40g powdered erythritol
Instructions
_. Preheat the oven to 175 Celsius / 350 Fahrenheit.
a. Beat the eggs until frothy. Add the sour cream and softened butter and blend with a food processor or electric mixer until combined.
d. Add 1/4 cup (4 tbsp) of lemon juice, the grated zest of 1 lemon and 1/3 cup powdered erythritol. Blend.
e. Lastly, add the almond flour and baking powder and mix until you have a smooth batter.
g. Line a 9x6 inch casserole dish / baking pan with parchment paper and fill in the dough.
h. Bake in the middles shelf of the oven for 35-40 minutes until the top is lightly browned and a skewer inserted comes out clean.
i. Leave to cool completely before cutting or removing from the pan. Almond flour cakes are fragile when hot, but they firm up as they cool down.
Notes
This lemon cake recipe works best with coarse /grainy almond flour (ground almonds in the UK).
The cake is only gently sweet. Please taste and increase sweetener to your liking if necessary. For me, 1 1/2 lemons yielded 1/4 cup lemon juice. For extra zing, you could increase the
amount of lemon juice by up to 2 additional tbsp.
Wait until the cake is COMPLETELY cooled before dusting with powdered sweetener. If it's still warm, the erythritol melts into an unsightly sludge..

Thanks @MotherofPearl I might see if I can find a shorter version somewhere else maybe Smile

Following! Radio 4 listener here - although The Archers current format is not really grabbing me at the moment. Vest wearing is second nature here - DH is Italian and they love a good vest. He wears them all year round with a brief pause in July and August when even he admits it's too hot. I also love a good cardigan although my own dear grandmother would never wear them as she said they were for older ladies - a view she still held in her nineties, she never got old enough to wear a cardigan. Grin

Beebumble2 · 14/07/2020 07:51

Just found this thread, loving the suggestions, most of which remind me of my childhood, Granny and Aunties.
May I add Roget et Gallet soaps, fabulous fragrances. If unobtainable Pears was second best, or at least used for the children.
