Thank you so much for all your brilliant suggestions. I'm aware the last thread is running out, so I've added a new one, just in case we have any more suggestions from a bygone era, or we want to review any new purchases (I have loads on order at the moment!). Thanks to @kojolo for the thread title. Here's the link to the old one: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/3944582-To-realise-I-like-old-lady-things

@totallyyesno that reminds me of my nanna , she was 80 when I took her to an afternoon event the community centre had put on . After about half an hour she said ‘ come on let’s get out of here it’s full of old biddies ‘ Grin

EasilyDelighted · 14/07/2020 10:34

My nan too, she volunteered in her local hospital well into her 80s helping "the old biddies" who were mostly younger than her.

totallyyesno · 14/07/2020 13:16

That's great @elasticatedwaist and @easilydelighted! My grandmother was also delivering meals on wheels for people a lot younger than her for years. Of course, when she actually got to the stage of needing them herself, the service had been withdrawn. Sad

IntermittentParps · 14/07/2020 15:22

This might be a stupid question, but here I go Grin
When you put soap bars in clothes/linen drawers, do you leave them wrapped up or unwrap them?

SirVixofVixHall · 15/07/2020 13:38

I leave them wrapped, or they could stain clothes.

IntermittentParps · 15/07/2020 13:51

Thank you! Violet soap in nice wrappers arriving today. [yay]

...inspired by old ladies who take cuttings and seeds from the gardens of stately homes...

Inspired by this thread, I somehow ended up with a pocket containing honesty, lupine, and phlox seeds yesterday evening. I've decided to bring some small envelopes with me in future. Goodness knows what I'll run across on my evening constitutional. I am turning into my aunts.

JeSuisPoulet · 16/07/2020 10:31

Math a field near me has corn fields and many had blown/been knocked over and up-rooted. I picked up 2 on our dog walk to attempt a revival at home (they wouldn't fit in my pocket) and was worried someone would accost me on our way home! Mine not quite as furtive as yours I suspect Grin

Howgreenwasmyvalley · 16/07/2020 17:53

My lovely old grandma complained about being in a ward for old people when she was in hospital. She was 83 at the time. She died in 1976 and I still have a couple of her towels, I am a grandma now.Grin

Fruitloopcowabunga · 16/07/2020 18:14

Has anyone mentioned Monica Dickens? Especially My turn to make the tea

mathanxiety · 16/07/2020 19:32

I operate at dusk, JeSuisPoulet. I also walk in the 'estate' section of town where the houses are well back from the path. DD3 takes photos of other bushes and plants from the path while I do my gleaning.

Harvey's Bristol cream is every childhood Christmas for me. That and mashed carrots and Swede.
bluefoxmug · 16/07/2020 20:26

there is a fabulous dark purple rose near me.
I wonder if I could take cuttings of that?
I'm a fan of guerilla gardening. I buy bee friendly seeds and set it free where it belongs.

KatherineParr4 · 16/07/2020 21:33

I wish I knew how to take cuttings..

mathanxiety · 16/07/2020 22:45

Secateurs and rooting powder are your friends, bluefoxmug. Bring a bag.

Bluesparkled · 16/07/2020 22:49

I knocked on a door a while back to ask for a cutting from someone’s garden and met a fellow old lady- it was great, she had proper teacups and everything:)

SerendipitySunshine · 18/07/2020 20:11

Does anyone have any knicker recommendations please? Ideally big and black please.

PrivateSpidey · 19/07/2020 00:52

@Bluesparkled just catching up on the thread and saw you asked about tea towels - Emma Bridgewater has them, with loads of different designs including nature, places, kings and queens etc. There's a sale on at the mo as well.

You're probably sorted by now but just in case - anyway you can never have too many tea towels!

Bluesparkled · 19/07/2020 01:29

@PrivateSpidey thank you and I definitely don’t have enough yet. I may never have tbh.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 19/07/2020 22:48

Only read first couple of pages but have bought Chateau du Savon mystery box and it's already been shipped!

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 20/07/2020 07:31
