Thank you so much for all your brilliant suggestions. I'm aware the last thread is running out, so I've added a new one, just in case we have any more suggestions from a bygone era, or we want to review any new purchases (I have loads on order at the moment!). Thanks to @kojolo for the thread title. Here's the link to the old one: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/3944582-To-realise-I-like-old-lady-things

I like the sound of a solid perfume stick SirVix

SpeedofaSloth · 30/06/2020 19:26

I am slightly obsessed with long floaty nighties now. Those Powell Craft ones, what are the sizes like? If I'm 14/16, is their M/L right?

wildthingsinthenight · 30/06/2020 19:30

I might go Large SpeedOfASloth (if they do it?)
You must be able to float about.
Bigger is best 😊
Mine is large

wildthingsinthenight · 30/06/2020 19:35

Float about like a Victorian ghost...
Thems the rules

SpeedofaSloth · 30/06/2020 20:01

Floaty is essential. I only wear pyjama bottoms when they are too big, really not keen on close fitting nightwear, can't turn over properly Smile

wildthingsinthenight · 30/06/2020 20:47

Totally agree!

bluefoxmug · 30/06/2020 20:54

I'm just halfway through the first thread, but wanted to pop a placemark on this one cos it's so nice and soothing Grin

I like badedas, pears soap, radio 4, Stella Gibbons books, good quality shoes and poirot. I'm known for my love of old lady lavender and rose soaps and my friends give me them when they get them in gift sets or advent calendars. I plan to buy some lily of the valley scent and sloggi knickers when I'm next in town. I aspire to having some loose leaf tea in a teapot.

mathanxiety · 30/06/2020 21:23

Another thread! Huzzah!

wildthingsinthenight · 30/06/2020 21:58

millenium I am now looking into Stlla Gibbons...
I am addicted to buying books.
These arrived today

SirVixofVixHall · 30/06/2020 22:01

Rubber gardening clogs..trugs...proper wooden pegs in a pretty peg bag.

LunaNorth · 30/06/2020 22:04

I love an old lady comfort read. A lovely Rosamund Pilcher when nobody’s looking, and a Stella Gibbons when they are.

I adore my dressing gown. One of my greatest pleasures is to go outside first thing in my dressing gown, go and visit the greenhouse, deadhead my pots, water my vegetables and just waft. DH will bring me a cup of coffee and I’ll sit down on the settle with one of my terriers and just...aaaahhh.

That’s what it’s all about. Not the Hokey Cokey. That.

PrivateSpidey · 30/06/2020 22:12

Thanks for the new thread OP Brew

Just catching up...

SirVixofVixHall · 30/06/2020 22:14

Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont by Elizabeth Taylor is a wonderful novel with an elderly lady as the main character.

EasterBuns · 30/06/2020 22:27

A friend of mine used to say “for goodness sake” in front of her kids. Her dd decided to shorten it to f sake which sounded great.

SpeedofaSloth · 30/06/2020 22:34

Ooh, Stella Gibbons. I only know Cold Comfort Farm, I am going to look for her others now. Lovely happy ending for all.

OldLace · 30/06/2020 22:40

Placemarking.
With a nice cross stitched bookmark.
I cant wait to show you my peg bag. Tis a thing of beauty.
and I just got some proper old fashioned wooden pegs for it.
It's a bit late tonight, so I shall do it tomorrow.

MotherofPearl · 30/06/2020 22:48

I love a Barbara Pym novel for a comfort read. I've read them all but sometimes re-read my favourites.

PollyTunnel · 30/06/2020 22:59

Here I am in my fluffy socks with fluffy slippers and fluffy blanket crocheting granny squares. I may have a sherry or port in a minute dearies. SmileWine
Gardening has been a godsend in lockdown as well as baking, knitting and crossword puzzles. Comfort wear is the order of the day and styling my unruly lockdown hair in a bun. I am 25. (Sorry got that inverted, must be my age). Grin

BananasBananas · 30/06/2020 23:18

Talking of peg bags, Lakeland do some lovely oilcloth ones with a wooden dowel across the top to keep it rigid.

wildthingsinthenight · 30/06/2020 23:54

Oh that sounds just the thing Bananas
Mine is so old. Pre children!

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 01/07/2020 01:21

Apart from sherry, lavender & Badedas I'm not really into old lady chic things but this thread is so lovely.
As a child I loved reading my Nan's BeRo recipe book.

BeaLola · 01/07/2020 12:15

Ok - slightly off topic but I have a birthday next week and my DH wants to buy me a present/s - budget 0-£150 ish and I can't think of anything specific that I need - I said surprise me as I am easy to please and don't mind waiting past my birthday for the gift if it makes it easier to get but he looked like a rabbit in headlights and said I have to have done thing to open on the day so please suggest some things he would be able to buy

I love stationery - already have lots of fountain pens and washhi tape and notecards

Ive lots of Jo Malone and Chanel perfune

I thought of some lovely writing paper not quite sure where is best to buy a ream from and now I'm stuck - problem is I had a large birthday a couple of years ago and was fortunate to receive lots of fab things

I suggested plants for garden (already have lots of peonies and roses)

I suggested proper pencil sharpener, hardback of Anne of Green Gables and wouldn't mind a voucher for an event post lockdown but he wants to get me something to open .... TIASmile

Thank you for the recommendation for 'Chateau Du Savon' soaps they have arrived and smell absolutely divine and even the packaging is gorgeous.
