Thank you so much for all your brilliant suggestions. I'm aware the last thread is running out, so I've added a new one, just in case we have any more suggestions from a bygone era, or we want to review any new purchases (I have loads on order at the moment!). Thanks to @kojolo for the thread title. Here's the link to the old one: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/3944582-To-realise-I-like-old-lady-things

My Mum used to wear what she called a panty girdle, which was like a big pair of pants, made from a thick stretchy material and had suspenders attached. Brilliant item of underwear because it sucked your tummy in and nipped in your waist. I love the idea of wearing one with proper stockings from Wolford. Do they still exist?

IntermittentParps · 07/07/2020 09:35

It turns out I've never read Rosamunde Pilcher. I thought The Greengage Summer, which I loved, was her, but I just looked it up and it's Rumer Godden.

Does that mean I've got a whole new lovely back catalogue to discover?!

SaskiaRembrandt · 07/07/2020 09:38

This is a lovely thread. It's been years since I had a glass of sherry, but I seem to recall i quite liked it so I may but some.

Thank you to the people who recommended Chateau du Savon soap, I've just ordered a selection. I started using bar soap last year in a quest to cut down on unnecessary packaging; it's so much nicer than shower gel, I always feel like I've had a proper wash when I use soap.

While the weather has been cooler over the last few days, I've been going to bed with a mug of cocoa.

peaceanddove · 07/07/2020 09:40

If you like Rosamund's Pilcher then you'll love Marcia Willet, her books are almost identical and also set in Cornwall and Devon.

haverhill · 07/07/2020 09:48

I remember panty girdles! From Gossard, I think.
I love many things on this thread, always have. I now realise I am ‘soul-old’.

JeSuisPoulet · 07/07/2020 09:54

Someone was asking about teatowels? V&A have lovely old patterns so worth looking at their site and Amazon stock mugs/butter dishes with William Morris prints etc - an example of a bird covered tea towel here www.amazon.co.uk/Samuel-Lamont-Voysey-Garden-Cotton/dp/B07SNB7WF9/ref=sr_1_7?hvlocphy=1006602&hvnetw=g&keywords=v%26a+tea+towels&hvadid=259099280856&qid=1594111889&dchild=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwupD4BRD4ARIsABJMmZ82ZA7M_KkTthRf2zkSty75BbVZT7nfaLmuRwLbBaTEwQSPenzpdQwaAgyHEALw_wcB&hydadcr=25333_1768016&hvdev=c&hvqmt=e&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&hvtargid=kwd-316942529513&adgrpid=54811645884&hvrand=4996115321892030824&sr=8-7 I've gone back to memories of my grandparents with a back-of-door wooden bar roller hand towel rail - one of the ones with a looped towel you lift off to wash.

Anyone have dressing gown suggestions? I had a lovely cotton boho floaty summer one but it's been lost in our move Sad

Bluesparkled · 07/07/2020 10:40

That was me! Thank you @JeSuisPoulet:) Off to have a look now.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 07/07/2020 11:47

Beryl Kingston is another excellent author. And Elizabeth Jane Howard's Cazalet series.

PeskyRooks · 07/07/2020 14:47

peaceanddove you can still get panty girdles as you describe in the amazing Damart! I've recommended them so much on these threads I think they owe me a discount!

SirVixofVixHall · 07/07/2020 14:54

Rago are the brand for proper old fashioned roll-on girdles and panty girdles. You can get them on Amazon ( it is an American brand). They come up small.

mogloveseggs · 07/07/2020 17:26

American author but I like Debbie macomber books
Also just started sweet magnolias on Netflix which seems like a right good watch

Panty girdle? Is it just me that cringes at the word ‘panty’?
Howgreenwasmyvalley · 07/07/2020 18:17

Intermittentparps. I envy you starting to read Rosalind Pilchers books. I absolutely love them.

SirVixofVixHall · 07/07/2020 19:11

I hate the word “panties” but I can cope with “panty girdle” as so many women wore them when I was little. (Or a corselette).

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 07/07/2020 19:11

I don't know if you would call them old lady but after I've had my fill of criminal & gory thrillers I like to reset with a lovely & gentle romantic set in the past saga by either Katie Flynn (Liverpool set) or Lynda Page (Leicester/Leicestershire set)

Evanna13 · 07/07/2020 21:51

I love this thread. I would recommend the Cheringham series on audible for a lovely cozy mystery series.

MotherofPearl · 07/07/2020 23:15

For the sherry drinkers amongst us, what are your favoured brands?

I know that it would be in keeping with the spirit of the thread to like a sweet sherry, but I only like Tio Pepe, which is of course dry. But I'd be keen to try others, if anyone has any recommendations?

LadyPrigsbottom · 07/07/2020 23:24

@MotherofPearl

It isn't fancy, but I do quite like Croft, which claims to be dry, but I actually find it quite sweet if that makes any sense whatsoever! I like it because it reminds me of Christmas Grin.

SerendipitySunshine · 08/07/2020 01:00

I'm off to investigate panty girdles!

SirVixofVixHall · 08/07/2020 13:33

Serendipity depending on your shape you might find a roll on girdle more comfortable, but you can only wear it under dresses, whereas a panty girdle can be worn under trousers too, as the suspenders (if it has them) unhook. I find panty girdles tend to dig in a bit at the top of my legs, as the leg is normally low cut . A roll on is open, you wear pants underneath.

VictoriaBun · 08/07/2020 18:35

Don't know how to do a clicky link but just seen a company called Museum Selection that has lots of items including clothes, jewellery ,home etc that might whet the appetite of some in here.

peaceanddove · 08/07/2020 18:40

Wouldn't a roll on just roll up as you moved around? I imagine it ending up rolled up around your waist like a belt?

NannyOgg66 · 08/07/2020 19:20

@peaceanddove What Katie Did sell panty girdles with detachable suspenders and open bottom girdles which are same as roll on girdles ( they dont have pants attached).Sorry I dont know how to add a link. I can also recommend Rago, I've got a shapewear suspender belt from them which is not quite as firm as a girdle but still pulls everything in a bit.

NannyOgg66 · 08/07/2020 19:22

Roll on girdles were worn with stockings so that stopped them from rolling upwards. I think now they generally have silicone band round them. Having not worn one without stockings though I wouldn't like to say if it would stay put.

Oooh, THANK you! It reminds me a lot of Past Times (which sadly is no longer operating).

Here's a clicky link for Museum Selection

They sell floaty nightdresses too!
