Thank you so much for all your brilliant suggestions. I'm aware the last thread is running out, so I've added a new one, just in case we have any more suggestions from a bygone era, or we want to review any new purchases (I have loads on order at the moment!). Thanks to @kojolo for the thread title. Here's the link to the old one: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/3944582-To-realise-I-like-old-lady-things

I am still searching for the perfect dusting powder. Anyone have any suggestions please?

Airy I have the Bronnley Orchard dusting power, and I'm enjoying using it though it's perhaps a bit too sweet for my taste. I really fancy the Youth Dew dusting powder for autumn/winter, but I suppose it's rather extravagant.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 24/08/2020 21:20

Finally got some Yardley Lily of the Valley perfume and I'm really disappointed with it. It's doesn't smell anything like any soaps or anything else I've ever had in that scent Sad and it's got that horrid salty smell too Envy (not envy).

Any recommendations for other brands to try?

VictoriaBun · 26/08/2020 09:56

I have just come across a Facebook page / and website called Museum Selection, it's filled with lots of loveliness and they also do a catalogue.

Deathraystare · 30/08/2020 12:27

Dior do a Lily of the valley perfume - Diorissimo but it is about £65. Penhaligon's is even more!

Deathraystare · 30/08/2020 12:38

In a lot of ways I am embracing being an old lady (I am 60!) but I am sort of trying to be a bit glam and sexy too - not easy with incontinence!!

I remember that carmite cream! I guess I should get some. My nails are dreadful!

I love Rosemary Pilchur and Maeve Binchey and Debbie McComber.

I have my mum's old I pod with a lot of 'talking books' on it, but it seems to be not working now Will have to get another one and save the books from my computer I guess.

Like the look of those nighties. I don't normally wear them for bed, but as I share a flat I have to quickly put one on before I rush to the loo.

Be-Ro - yes got a copy and my mum's old Good Housekeeping.

I used to like Joy perfume which was a rich floral (unusual for me to like florals).

I have always loved the Yardley soaps. I would ask for Lavender. Also Bronnley lemon shaped soaps for Christmas. Oh and the fern soap too.

Definitely all about the comfort in shoes - wearing some old skechers which have a hole where my toe poked through but I am going to wear them until they fall apart!

AiryFairyMum · 05/09/2020 19:30

I'm looking for full slips. Do I want silk or satin? Where's the best place to buy them please?

i made some lavender wands the other day....I put them on the bedside table in the spare room and forgot all about them until I saw talk of lavender bags...I shall go and see if they still smell on my way to bed tonight

Does anyone remember Nightingales??... they used to do all the white cotton fancy nighties and LadyDi blouses.

I also really liked the photo of the pearl wearing lady, I had decided to go for ageing rocker...jeans and nice black t shirts but I think I might wing in a good shirt and cardi for highdays and holidays

30under · 05/09/2020 20:39

I think I have found my people!

I bought some lily of the valley perfume from M&S last year, heavily reduced - I think it's lovely, light enough to wear every day.

I am secretly coveting a bed jacket - no idea where to look though?

I love ECCO shoes for their comfort.

Read Rosamund Pilcher years ago, and most of the authors mentioned (I am an avid reader and library user).

30under · 05/09/2020 20:39

Oh yes and I wear pearls (family heirloom) fairly regularly!

Remona · 05/09/2020 21:43

I find that the beauty section of TK Maxx/Homesense is excellent for those large bars of French soap. They have a great selection and of course in gorgeous fragrances such as lavender. As they’re only a couple of pounds, it’s worth it if you don’t want to spend a lot.

Remona · 05/09/2020 21:53

I too am a fan of:
Big pants
Comfy shoes
High thread count cotton bedding
Feather duvets and pillows
Toasted tea cakes
Crumpets
Seed cake
Lavender
Crochet
Midsomer Murders/a good detective drama
Classic FM
Visiting museums
Visiting National Trust properties
Second hand bookshops
Being showered and in my nightie by 6pm Wink
Early nights
Being up very early

My DS (24) has always loved his thermal vests. I’ve always said you can tell it’s summer when he discards it. He came to visit last week and said “Look what’s made a reappearance” before pulling his top up to proudly display his thermal vest. I felt very proud indeed and know that summer is now well and truly over Grin

30-under - try eBay vintage for bed jackets, I’ve seen some nice ones on there!

Notarealmum · 06/09/2020 10:04

Sorry, I should have introduced myself - I’m not sure I entirely qualify to join this thread, though I’m definitely quite old, and a lady. My interest is geared more towards the vintage side of things (‘proper’ vintage, that is, not your 70s/80s etc recent stuff 😀) but I’ve been reading with interest and do have some likes in common with you all e.g.

Tea sets (and cake stands, ideally with some lovely scones on)
Bronnley soaps
Underslips
Early nights
Crochet, especially mats for the dressing table
Oh, and my mum presented me with a Be-Ro recipe book when I left home (a long time ago now), like it was a rite of passage.
I’m sure there’s more.....

NannyOgg66 · 06/09/2020 12:02

@AiryFairyMum Sulis silks do full slips or used to but very expensive. I used to have some lovely satin ones from Marks and Spencer but they seemed to have stopped doing them now. Suzanne Charles do cotton full slips. I wear marks and Spencer cool comfort ones now, quite boring but very nice and comfy, as can't afford silk ones sadly and ones I had for years didn't fit after breast feeding and boobs becoming massive 😁 My other suggestion is ebay for true vintage.

NannyOgg66 · 06/09/2020 12:04

@Notarealmum welcome ! I like vintage things as well, sadly I'm too big at size 16 though for most vintage clothing. Love a nice tea set Smile

bluerad · 06/09/2020 21:08

@Bluesheep8 chique! I used to use it. Did you find it at the back of a cupboard Smile

bluerad · 06/09/2020 21:10

@30under I bought a bed jacket from John Lewis. It's perfect for popping on over your nightie when you want to sit up in bed and drink a cup of tea or read. Doesn't get bunched up like a longer dressing gown.

Notarealmum · 07/09/2020 02:53

Thanks for the welcome, Nanny, I think I like it here! 🌻

Bluesheep8 · 07/09/2020 06:56

bluerad no I bought it last year from an independent shop. I was on the look out for panache as I wanted to smell it again and found Chique aswell. I actually love them both. Being told I smell like the 70s is a compliment to me! Those huge bottles are £9 each

lborgia · 08/09/2020 03:16

I’m not going to get anything done for the next day or so, because I’m only half way through hte first thread, and just had to come and say how lovely! Yes to all the above, but also Sloe gin, made and kept in a dark cupboard, and bed socks. 45 weeks of hte year! I’ve been known to wear Victorian summer cotton nightie, with bed socks.

Does anyone remember the triumph ads “triumph has the bra for the way you arrrreee...”.

I have had my granny’s machine for making cream/butter, but haven’t seen it since our last move, and butter paddles for shaping into blocks. Much more, but must go back and keep reading.

Lovely.

lborgia · 08/09/2020 03:33

PS bedjacket is trending at John Lewis Hmm

30under · 08/09/2020 21:56

Thanks, @bluerad !

Deathraystare · 09/09/2020 12:30

Bluesheep8

Yes! I remember them! I was thinking this morning how much my Aunt copied my mum and me with stuff - despite rubbishing our sense of style etc! She started wearing Panache after she smelt it on me, she also copied my Mary Quant Chic Cherry lipstick (a dark black cherry colour! Could not wear it now, it did not suit either of us!), copied the style of Mum's bra's etc etc.

I remember my mum and my aunt (there she goes again, copying!) both wore Tweed by Lentheric - gawd, it was like cat's pee!
