Thank you so much for all your brilliant suggestions. I'm aware the last thread is running out, so I've added a new one, just in case we have any more suggestions from a bygone era, or we want to review any new purchases (I have loads on order at the moment!). Thanks to @kojolo for the thread title. Here's the link to the old one: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_classics/3944582-To-realise-I-like-old-lady-things

Found this, boxed and unopened in a charity shop yesterday for £2. Another 'old lady' perfume to add to my collection!

Bluegrass is one of my favourites! Stands out amongst the many 'Celeb sickly sweet crap' anyway!!!

MotherofPearl · 13/09/2020 21:38

Bluegrass! I've not seen that for years. My DM used to wear it sometimes.

NannyOgg66 · 27/09/2020 11:06

For anyone who was interested in Kimonoes a few pages back, I've just remembered about Japanya another company that does them a little cheaper than The Japanese shop.

Is anybody still around?

The season has changed and dark evenings and rain, rain - so much rain - is making me think that the old ladies of S&B are needed again!

Deathraystare · 29/10/2020 18:01

Yes! I am here! Funnily enough in a rare tidy up I came across a bottle of Bluegrass perfume.

Wonderful!

I ordered a tiny bottle of 4711 yesterday to see whether I like it, as normal perfumes seem to stink to high heaven these days. Oh, and I found somewhere on Amazon selling big tubs of Pond's Cold Cream (as Boots have stopped doing their cheap one) for under a tenner - which should go nicely with the pack of cheesecloth I ordered at the same time (half will be culinary use, half cut into face cloths - if DP doesn't get to it and drape it around the place for Hallowe'en, that is).

I also ordered a bronze hurricane lantern that's apparently been converted from a kerosene one to take batteries. That's getting hung above the kitchen table for 'intimate' dinners with DP. If it works, I might get one that's based on the old paraffin lamps like my Granddad had in his place before they had electricity.

Darklane · 29/10/2020 19:43

I’m not sure I qualify to be here either ,Notarealmum as 70s/80s seem quite new to me too. Stuff turns up on Antiques Road Trip that I till have in the cupboard from buying when newly married or from Habitat when it still had the basements full of kitchen stuff.
I knit & crochet, cook everything from scratch & am a demon gardener, needs must.
I remember Nightingales, they used to sell a few clothes as well as nighties, shopping at Chelsea Girl & using Mary Quant makeup when it was newly launched. I used to buy from the Biba catalogue, pity I chucked it all as it would be worth a fortune now.
Your local auction house is a treasure trove for things like tea sets that go for a fraction they cost when new, out of fashion you see. I still have the complete Midwinter Spanish Garden dinner service that was our first crockery.

Makiwa · 30/10/2020 10:13

I'm still here too and have been using my Bluegrass perfume more often since the days started drawing in.

We're back in to full lock down in France so I shall get my YouTube taught lefthanded crocheting out again and carry on with my square a day.

Speaking of all the rain, I have a rain hat which is very granny like. It comes out when I need to have both hands free in the rain and is far better than a hood on a coat. Hoods tend to flop over my head right down to my nose!

HappydaysArehere · 30/10/2020 10:25

I was delighted to see this thread. I am ancient so is there a chance I might come into fashion? My gran used to say “keep hold of something long enough and it will come into fashion again”. Looks as if her Victorian view was correct. I am available for advice on sketchers and hotter shoes/boots etc and offer now the idea that if you wear those really high heels you will end up with bunions.

Deathraystare · 30/10/2020 11:16

MitziK

Ohh good news about Ponds. I often used the cold cream in the winter (and need it now because the masks I wear make my cheeks extra dry!).

Darklane

I used to lust after Mary Quant make up! Especially the dark mauve nail polishes. I used to have the very very dark Choosy Cherry lipstick and Chic Cherry nail polish. I never got much pocket money but used to save and save for the blushers as well as the lipsticks and one day got an eye gloss too.

Decades later I went to the shop in Chelsea and the make up was pants. All shiny shiny - like little girls 'unicorn' make up. To think they used to do the best reds and pinks!

latedecember1963 · 30/10/2020 11:30

Does anyone remember the Mary Quant perfume pencil called Havoc? It had a silver and black design and you sharpened it like a pencil.
I must have been about 14 when I got it and thought it was so sophisticated. My dad thought it was hilarious. 😁

Darklane · 30/10/2020 12:26

No, I don’t remember the perfume pencil.
Does anyone remember Max Factor Electrique, Primitif or Hypnotique?
Am I remembering through rise tinted glasses or were the cheap perfumes back then nicer than many new expensive ones?
I used to love the Revlon thick twist up blush & highlighter sticks in the pearlised pink chunky sticks, similar to the Nars ones but bigger.
And lots of the lipsticks like Max Factor & Estée Lauder came in gold metal tubes, not plastic.

PeskyRooks · 01/11/2020 17:06

Hello!
Checking back in with the old lady thread.
I have Bluegrass love it.
Today been looking for a below the knee bias cut lined tweed skirt for the winter.
Just discovered Anya Seton books they are amazing especially Katherine. If you like Phillippa Gregory and Jean Plaidy you will love her books too.

Maireas · 01/11/2020 18:05

I used to love Havoc by Mary Quant! I had the silver spray bottle. I was also about 14 and thought I was very sophisticated. I then moved on to Charlie, which I was still wearing at university.

latedecember1963 · 01/11/2020 18:42

Ah, happy memories. 💖

goose1964 · 01/11/2020 20:09

You can buy Korres in Waitrose.

teawamutu · 01/11/2020 21:12

@goose1964

You can buy Korres in Waitrose.
You can, although v few options and £££ - £8 per shower gel and £10 per body cream.

What I bought worked out to less than £5 per item even with shipping, and there were scents I've never seen in the UK.

YouAreMySunshine123 · 01/11/2020 21:57

I bought a bottle of Anais Anais the other day 😊

Maireas · 01/11/2020 22:13

Anais Anais! I used to love that. Such a pretty bottle as well. I read that Diana used to wear it, too.

RuffleCrow · 01/11/2020 22:16

@PeskyRooks I described Trump as "a rotter" to my kids yesterday. It's a great word to really say with gusto without swearing!

YouAreMySunshine123 · 01/11/2020 22:21

@RuffleCrow ooo crumbs!

AiryFairyMum · 01/11/2020 22:59

I'm stocking up on beautiful things from this thread as Christmas presents for my friends (and myself!).
