How to not look middle aged

Justtakeatowel · 17/06/2020 19:30

I've seen a few pictures of my recently and I look frumpy. I don't mind looking my age (mid 40s) but I just look uurgh.

I've started curly girl and I think curly hair ages me loads! Where do I need to buy from to make myself a bit more with it? I've a tendency to buy cheap supermarket stuff which I think isn't always cut the best and I'm willing to spend a bit more.

I'm 5 ft 7 and 9 stone 9 if that makes a difference but a definite apple and have a bit of a belly which I think adds to the frumpiness

Thanks!

I don't understand, do you want to look like a teenager ? frumpy is nothing to do with age. I have 50 year old friends who take care of themselves, dress well and look fab and I work with 20 year olds who look frumpy.
I think it's about looking 'polished' although simple - nails, hair, clothing. No cheap shops or flowery prints. think Cos, chloe, uniqlo, that kind of vibe. And looking healthy - exercise, good diet and loads of water.

Your hair looks fine, just step away from the silicone and the sulphates products, also growing your hair will look much better.

I think pinterest can help pulling together styles. You have an amazing figure, I think this is about confidence

Hi being true to who you are is key and dressing for yourself and not others I’m 52 and look about 40 - sometimes even 36 lol and feel better about myself now than ever due to accepting I’m me which makes a difference.

I am overweight but curvey 14-16 maintain dyed hair every 3-4 weeks that’s long and light blonde around the face which helps to look fresher - no aging bob haircuts here and wear minimal makeup but tint eyelashes and eyebrows Bottox in key areas so look natural and sunkist with a light tanning cream And use blushes and lip tint such as nars orgasm or Clarins cheeky pink stay away from sparkles.

Being happy in your skin is key and wear comfy stuff but from a variety of places and Agee with no supermarket clothes rule - I buy and sell on eBay to keep costs down and gives me the chance to try new looks wide trousers for example skirts and use Zara to top shop classic looks can be ageing as is the lagenlook as is linen unless live somewhere hot - also wrap dresses are ageing too
Hope this helps be you and try new things and find your own style away

Ps have done face yoga for years and it works also started q10 cream Aldi 1.45 and this works too but keep away from eyes ouch

WantToSleepNow · 21/06/2020 13:31
@Wanttpsleepnow have you noticed a difference with face yoga? Which one do you do? Thanks.
I did Fumiko Takatsu, The Face Yoga Method. I didn't buy it, just used the videos on her website/youtube and there was a free webinar when I signed up. You don't need to buy it as there's only so many face exercises you can do each day Grin. I do five or six. She will sporadically spam you with lots of emails so I unsubscribed after a while. It makes my skin feel better, helps with that tight face feeling and makes me feel more smiley.

Pay a bit extra to get high waisted jeans and trousers rather than regular jeans which haven't recovered from the awful hipster look of the nineties.
Wear things that fit you not a bigger size.
I get lovely clothes from charity shops, unfortunately they are not open yet x

Bluntness100 · 22/06/2020 07:02

Not everyone suits high waisted jeans, I certainly don’t, I look better in mid rise, and as the op is slim I’m assuming she likely does too.

Pikachubaby · 22/06/2020 08:15

I look crazy in high waisted jeans, I have long legs and a small body, and I just look like part of me is missing

High waisted jeans is honestly a weird look on me Grin

Bluntness100 · 22/06/2020 08:18

I’m the same, long legs and short body, high waisted is not a good look on me.

lockdownalli · 22/06/2020 09:25

I just signed up to Stitchfix on the back of this thread! No more frumpy for me hopefully

AgathaX · 22/06/2020 10:08

I have frizzy, sort of curly but sort of not hair too. I use this product now, every three months. Get rid of the frizz for weeks and since I'm not having to use straighteners on it daily, it improves the condition too. I get mine from Amazon.

Tryingtogetitright · 22/06/2020 11:03

I like the Putting Me Together blog. She wears lots of "normal" clothes in a variety of ways and gives good ideas to make different "outfits" out of clothes by adding a necklace or a jacket or something. All very wearable.

PS I like your hair agree with PPs that you should just grow it a bit.

Railingsohno · 22/06/2020 12:51

This is a great blog, she does tie in with Everlane but it’s great for ideas of different ways to wear the same item. She’s really body positive which I like too

I think we need to make sure our hairstyle is not too long as we get older. It definitely can take years off us to have it cut shorter. I like mine just above the shoulders.

Lightbulbinmybrain · 23/06/2020 06:38

I’m sorry but I find a lot of this thread really depressing. What’s wrong with looking your age? The people I know who look young for their age have always done so... some of them are a bit chubby, scruffy or (gasp!) wear supermarket clothes. It’s genetics!

IMO older women who spend a lot of money/time on their appearance look ‘well put together’ - they don’t look any younger. Some really really healthy (vegan yoga meditation etc) people look amazing and glowing, but they still generally look their age...and there’s nothing wrong with that!

Treatedlikeamaid · 23/06/2020 07:07

For what it’s wort, I think the most important thing is twinkly eyes and a sense of fun!
I found finding the colours that suit you v useful - I’m autumn- it makes hunting round shops easy and means everything sort of matches.
And other ladies I admire have..a Sense of aliveness( they usually do sport) hair and strong lippy as mentioned above, classic white shirt and good jeans and good leather shoes, bag.
Wish I could achieve it myself!

Bluntness100 · 23/06/2020 07:07

Oh please not that old chestnut. Older women can look fabulous with long hair as they get older as long as your hair is in good Nick. My own hair is past my bra strap, I’m fifty one, I’m not getting it cut short any time soon.

Pikachubaby · 23/06/2020 07:56

Lightbulbinmybrain, not sure if you are deliberately misunderstanding, but this thread is very much about clothes and style, not despair at the natural process of ageing

OP is not lamenting BEING middle aged (she isn’t) but just wants to sort out her dress style which she believes is unnecessarily ageing

Nothing depressing about that imo

I'm even older and mine is fast approaching my bra strap because I haven't had it cut for so long. I really like it and think I will it keep it this way.It is also curly with grey streaks.
PopeyeSpinach · 23/06/2020 08:12

Straggly, rough looking hair AT ANY AGE is not a good look. There is no reason why someone needs to cut their hair short because they reached a certain age. Shorter hair is not always more practical or youthful. My bob needed more styling than my bra strap length hair.

merrymouse · 23/06/2020 08:20

She was specifically lamenting looking 'frumpy', which isn't age specific.

Ummm... the thread is called How to not look middle aged - and the OP IS middle aged? Surely mid-40s is middle aged??

(Based on a quick google, ''According to the Oxford English Dictionary middle age is between about 45 and 65')

Maybe this is based on confusion about what 'middle aged' means? Or a confusion of the term 'middle aged' with 'frumpy'?

I'd love to see a whole group of men discussing 'how not to look middle aged' Grin

ppeatfruit · 23/06/2020 08:45

Treated A good white shirt I have 2 lovely expensive white shirts in my wardrobe and since retirement haven't worn them (I barely wore them before) I hate the idea of getting them dirty , every mark shows up .

Newgirls · 23/06/2020 08:54

Lightbulb - I wish more men would discuss their appearance - round here the middles aged women look so much better than the men!

ppeatfruit · 23/06/2020 09:28

They're lazy! New I can never get over seeing the majority of men eating in posh restaurants in Fr. wearing Tshirts and track suits! Women tend to dress for the occasion and have more awareness of their surroundings.
