How to not look middle aged

Justtakeatowel · 17/06/2020 19:30

I've seen a few pictures of my recently and I look frumpy. I don't mind looking my age (mid 40s) but I just look uurgh.

I've started curly girl and I think curly hair ages me loads! Where do I need to buy from to make myself a bit more with it? I've a tendency to buy cheap supermarket stuff which I think isn't always cut the best and I'm willing to spend a bit more.

I'm 5 ft 7 and 9 stone 9 if that makes a difference but a definite apple and have a bit of a belly which I think adds to the frumpiness

Thanks!

Where are all the S and B people who post photos of their daily wardrobes on here ?

These threads are always bonkers.

I dont' get the anti wool coat thing, I usually wear them over winter, I also own umbrellas.

Exactly! I never wear hoods.

I’m struggling with those who have named Lucy Worsley as someone who is stylish. I think she’s somewhere between dreadful frumpy and looking like a toddler’s idea of how an adult should dress.

I don't think there is one way to be stylish. I think she always looks interested, enthusiastic and as though she is having fun. I think her clothes reflect her interest in historical fashion.

At some point everyone is going to look old.Better to look alive than desperately try to fight the consequences of having lived.*

Some people are a bit catty about Lucy. Do they know that she is clever and photogenic, too?!

Alsohuman · 18/06/2020 19:39

I think biker jackets are definitely a classic. I’m very fond of a biker jacket, midi dress and trainer combination. All Saints leather jackets are lovely @WingBingo, I’d love a navy one.

I have my own style rules that I follow.

No scoop necks or ditzy florals.

Find a style that suits your personality. Like Lucy Worsley.

How is thread 16 pages? Grin

It's pretty simple, to look your best 45+ you need to be in the best possible health. So exercise, diet, water, water ,water and sleep are paramount.
Without these basic foundations, it doesn't matter what you do with your hair, or what your skincare is or what you wear - focus on the fundamental health issues first.

Then look at face and body care - moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. The Ordinary is fab for finding which serums suit you. Ensure Vit C and spf in the morning and retinol at night.

Then makeup - the older we get, the less we should wear. Try to just wear mascara, blush and sheer lipstick. Highlighter for extra bloom.

For your hair, your look seems a little boho so grow it, embrace your waves and get honey blonde highlights - think Jen Aniston.

In fact check pinterest out for Ms Aniston style to copy - kind of like thege photos you posted but would just make you look more put together - good tan leather accessories, blazers, linen white shirts, flat front trousers, lived in jeans, midi pencil skirts.

You're still young - have fun Smile

I've never heard of Lucy Worsley but that photo on p12 is an abonimation - the coat, the tights, the shoes, the hair - no, just no. She looks way older than she is.
Don't get trussed up or overdone - casual stylish is waaay more sexy.

Ginfordinner · 18/06/2020 20:04

@ppeatfruit not wearing glasses isn’t an option for me. I’m 61, have complex eyesight issues and had a couple of PVDs so having any kind of laser surgery or lens replacement is off the cards. And I can’t wear contact lenses any more. I have a small head so most frames don’t fit me, and I end up wearing what I can find that fits rather than what really suits me.

And, no to camel coats. The colour does not suit me at all. I am a jewel winter and the colour just drains my face.

candilemon · 18/06/2020 20:07

JMAngel

Describe your style, if you are brave enough. Incidentally, I don’t think Lucy Worsley - historian - is aiming for “sexy”. 😆

JMAngel1 · 18/06/2020 20:08

Glasses can be gorgeous - just go big and black rimmed - check out Kat Farmer on instagram.

But do you live somewhere wet and windy? Do you walk a lot? Do you have a dog?! Brollies don’t cut it here. Wool is kept for work days/going out/dry days
hollieberrie · 18/06/2020 20:16

Lucy Worseley rocks! She's one of my fave Twitter follows.
(disclaimer - keen history geek)

candilemon · 18/06/2020 20:17

It can be wet and windy but hoods are not attractive.

True but you look better afterwards when you take your coat off than if you’ve not had a good on! 🙈
JMAngel1 · 18/06/2020 20:19

I'm not professing to have amazing style but I try Smile
I have a definite uniform for sure. Pleather skinnies with off the shoulder sweater and oversized wool camel.coats, white trainers or mid heel suede ankle boots in winter..Spring/summer is distressed boyfiend jeans or wrap midi skirts with satin cowl camis and blazers or oversized snuggly cardis depending on weather, Usually switch trainers for tan leather flat sandals or gladiator wedges. Sometimes wear levis cut off shorts - just to mid thigh (I'm 48)with a simple v neck t shirt. Fine gold necklace and chunky leather wrist wraps.
My main style rule is never to wear anything up to the neck - has to be cowl, v neck or off the shoulder for my shape - halterneck occasionally.

candilemon · 18/06/2020 20:20

Historian?!!

Erm...yes. She has a First from Oxford. Don’t you think intelligence is a pretty attractive attribute, then?

Sounds very stylish Smile. How do off the shoulder jumpers work when it’s chilly?
JMAngel1 · 18/06/2020 20:21

Rik Owen leather jackets with hoods are ridiculously stylish - wish I could have one.

Railingsohno · 18/06/2020 20:22

It is hard to be stylish and warm and dry! When you have an active life and you live in a cold wet place and you have sporty boys 😁 and a dog

candilemon · 18/06/2020 20:22

JMAngel1

Most of that sounds nice. The gladiator sandals - not so much.

Well , the oversized coat keeps me snuggly and I usually wear a boob tube under the bare shoulder jumper to keep me warm Grin

candilemon · 18/06/2020 20:24

Who is this Rik Owen person? Another historian?
