Anyone chopped all their hair off and loved it?

I've had long hair forever, realised that lately I constantly wear it up and don't actually like it when it's down, so think it's time to finally try short hair.

Thinking of a blunt bob or a long pixie (probably the bob as I'm too much of a chicken to go straight to a pixie). Just wondering if anyone has gone from long to short and if they loved it or hated it. Also how much of a faff is it to style short hair? Mine is quite thick and a bit wavy.

I did! No regrets.

It’s so much easier to style shorter hair. Much faster drying time, less time spent curling/straightening too. Because your hair will feel thicker after a blunt cut, I feel like ponytails and buns don’t take as much effort to look decent.

Definitely let your stylist know that you have naturally wavy hair so they can accommodate it in the cut. You don’t want a cut where you feel like you have to straighten/style it to look decent

QuestionableMouse · 12/06/2020 01:19

I have twice. Cut it from bum length (I could easily sit on it!!) to chin length the first time and felt so free. Much easier to wash and no more neck ache.

It was mid back the second time and again I didn't regret it at all. It's reaching the danger zone again now and I'm so tempted to chip it off again.

Browzingss · 12/06/2020 01:56

I think it’s a good plan to get a bob first instead of going straight to a pixie.

Lots of people after a big chop end up wanting to go shorter anyway, but it’s better to cut too little instead of too much!

MaryLennoxsScowl · 12/06/2020 09:45

I did! I went from hair right down my back to a pixie and loved it. After a year or two I grew it out to bob length and then chopped it off again. Later I grew it out again and suffered the bob stage again until it got longer. It definitely suits me better as a pixie than as a bob. If you suit your hair in a bun or a ponytail but don’t like it down you might also suit a pixie more than a bob, so if a pixie is what you’re drawn to I’d try it - at least then you’ve tried what you really wanted!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 12/06/2020 09:53

Last cut I went to chin length and I liked it, and managed to tame the curls into something quite nice.

I want to try a short cut but even in lockdown I am afraid of looking like Justin Timberlake in his Nsync days; or Kath from Kath and Kim.

Mine was bra strap length, and thoughI like it long I had noticed it was breaking at the back. I'm not sure if it was just condition or where I pull my hair round to the front, but yes it took a lot of drying.

I did the Mumsnet chop and while I dont like hair touching my face (hence having it long and no fringe before) I got back my waves, and I just wear a headband/clip now

Teacaketotty · 12/06/2020 11:16

I had long hair and cut it into a bob a few years ago, I did really like it but I found it quite limiting on what styles I could do with it. Although it was quicker to do in the morning.

I’ve grown it long again and don’t think I would go short again but you should go for it - worst happens it will grow back.

I also felt it gave my face more shape if that makes sense?

Neron · 12/06/2020 13:26

I did, went from boob length hair to short pixie which was shaved at the back.
Bit of a shock and a WTF have I done couple of moments if I'm honest - but then I absolutely loved it. I felt like I could experiment and do so much with my short hair, than when it was longer

Coffeepot72 · 12/06/2020 13:50

I always had shoulder length hair - then got it cut short. It definitely suited me, and everyone said I looked younger. But unless I was really dressed up, and my outfit and makeup were spot on, it was hard to look edgy, and I realised it made me feel a bit middle aged. I also felt less feminine. It’s nearly back at my shoulders again now, I feel a lot happier with it, I can throw on a casual outfit and still look/feel ok.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/06/2020 14:06

I’ve always had long or a layered bob style. Had a blunt cut bob and I got so many compliments.

Popc0rn · 12/06/2020 15:52

@Coffeepot72

That's my worry about going straight for a pixie, I don't think I'm ugly but would say my facial features aren't overly feminine, more handsome if that makes sense Confused. And if I don't like it I think growing out from a pixie would look a bit mullet like for a while?! I'm watching Dr Foster on Netflix atm and love her short hair, but she's obviously always got it professionally styled with make up and smart clothes.

I've got time to mull it over anyway, waiting list at my hairdressers is 6 weeks atm Shock.

Growing mine out hasn’t been too bad and has taken approx 18 months. And yes, I know exactly what you mean about Suranne Jones out of Dr Foster, but unless I had done the full works with grooming I felt more like Janice Battersby 🤨

AvoidingRealHumans · 12/06/2020 16:42

I went from hair length between back bra strap and butt to blunt bob.
My hairdresser was cringing and didn't want to do it at first but I absolutely love it.
I find that I do so much more with it now its shorter, whereas I would just chuck it up when it was long.
I told myself that it would grow back but I can't see me going back long again.

ScrapThatThen · 12/06/2020 17:12

Sadly I think you are right about the really short cuts. I really like the second screenshot attached, but will possibly go for the first or something a bit longer.

There used to be threads on this site asking about the pros and cons of cutting long hair - usually to a pixie cut. The posters promised to return to show a pic with the new cut. Very few did. I can only assume they were not happy.

KatherineJaneway · 12/06/2020 17:24

For me, I hated it. I felt very unfeminine. Not that women with short hair are unfeminine, I personally just felt that way after having it done.

Coffeepot72 · 12/06/2020 17:26

I just don’t feel like ‘me’ unless I’ve got a reasonable amount of hair, I hadn’t expected this

Redcrayons · 12/06/2020 17:33

I went from bra strap to chin length. The hairdresser was a bit reluctant, and was trying to talk me into shoulder length as he thought it was too big a change. I love it, much easier and looked better. although with lockdown it’s getting past shoulders and I’m starting to wonder if I should grow it out again.

A pixie is quite drastic and will take an age to grow back if you don’t like it.

GreenGordon · 12/06/2020 17:39

I did mine during lockdown. From bra strap length to pixie. I’m pleased with it, but if I wasn’t It will have grown again before I go back to work.

Worst thing I ever did! I dont have very femine features and it looked bloody awful. Got bullied for like 2 years at school cos of my pixie!

Popc0rn · 12/06/2020 17:50

Thinking of something like this...obviously looks stunning on them, but they could probably also pull off a shaved head Grin.

I'm not a fan of Pixies. Each to their own but if even Emma Watson couldn't pull it off then it's not an easy style.

I chopped from mid-back to just above my jaw and liked it, but found I grew it out again as I missed looking decent in a ponytail.

CorianderLord · 12/06/2020 18:02

Love the Holly bob, what's your hair colour?

bookwormlady · 12/06/2020 18:11

Quite a few years ago I had mine cut from shoulder length to short bob. It aged me and made me look mumsy.

The Holly W bob length is nice though.
