Anyone chopped all their hair off and loved it?

I've had long hair forever, realised that lately I constantly wear it up and don't actually like it when it's down, so think it's time to finally try short hair.

Thinking of a blunt bob or a long pixie (probably the bob as I'm too much of a chicken to go straight to a pixie). Just wondering if anyone has gone from long to short and if they loved it or hated it. Also how much of a faff is it to style short hair? Mine is quite thick and a bit wavy.

A pixie cut is very difficult to pull off with thick wavy hair. Even more difficult to grow out. You would have to go through the mushroom phase.

I’ve gone to just skimming shoulders length a couple of times and love it. Currently in between bra strap and waist and thinking about the chop again but I think I only ever look really smart for work with straightened hair and that’s so much easier when it’s long.

I have very thick, unruly 2c/3a waves and curls. I actually found myself doing more with my hair, and trying new things when it was short. A downside would be having it cut and shaved every 3 - 4 weeks as my hair grows quick and would go out of shape but I played about with it.
When I've grown it out, it's not been that painful as I'd get creative with Bobby pins, head bands etc. I was also able to straighten it so it would look longer

I've flipped between bobs and pixies for the last 30 years. It's really fine so looks crap if it gets longer than jaw line but I keep wanting to be able to do fancy up dos. I've realised that it makes me feel frumpy and mumsy when it's at even short Bob length. Right now, it's grade 1 undercut (DH has been surprisingly handy with the clippers) and textured on top. I love it and can see myself keeping it like this for a long time.

Yes! And I love it. You should definitely at least try the short hair because hair always grows if you don’t like it. I’ve very much had the opposite experience though, that short hair is very addictive and hard to go back from.

I had very long past the bum hair through most of my life. People used to stop me in the street and say how beautiful it was and it actually really was but in all honesty I was hiding behind my hair and thought that if I cut it there would be nothing nice about me. It was definitely a safety blanket. Over a period of a few months, I was basically guilt tripped by friends and work colleagues into a charity haircut to donate hair to make wigs for cancer sufferers and raise money after a friend (she’s now better!) got bone cancer. I’ve no doubt if it wasn’t for that that I would still have super long hair.

It was a real shock. I went from below bum length to about the length that Holly’s is in that picture except the original cut was pretty bad. It was about 12 years ago so that length of hair wasn’t as popular and I don’t think hair dressers knew how to cut wavy hair in a longer bob as well as they do now. It stuck out like a triangle and I used to pull it back into a short stubby little ponytail, aiming for it to grow long again. Despite that, I loved how much quicker it was to wash and dry and I got into swimming as exercise which was much harder with long hair, and was also part of the reason I cut it shorter in the first place.

As I say I was planning on growing it long as quick as possible but actually ended up cutting it shorter to chin length and very short at the back after a wedding where I was a bridesmaid and we’d all been given faux bobs as it was a 20s themed wedding. I loved how it looked and got a lot of compliments and the hairdresser who styled it said I’d suit that length so I booked in with him to have it cut into a short 20s style bob. He knew exactly how to cut my type of hair and I’ve been going to him ever since (except during lockdown). I’ve kept it short, most recently in a Fleabag type style as I don’t have to straighten it and it’s a really easy haircut for me with swimming most days (again before lockdown). I’d definitely recommend it as a cut for wavy hair, it’s practical and looks chic. I’ve found myself much more daring with cuts, styles and colour since I’ve cut it all off. The only style I can’t imagine going back to is really long. Short hair is much more convenient and smarter/versatile I think.

Due to ill health, I’ve not had it cut since December now and it’s got really long for me and I hate it haha! I can’t wait for a good chop but he’s booked for a months after he can reopen. I’m thinking of growing it for a bit longer, as annoying as it is, so I can donate a full 12 inches to the Little Princess Trust. This will probably mean a very short pixie cut which I’m excited about but also nervous! But as I say, hair grows and within the year I could probably have it back to chin length and my old style.

Check out Rachel welland on YouTube as she’s had a few nice cuts between bob and short pixie. I’ve used her as inspiration in the past and taken pictures to my hairdresser. Also Kinna Grannis (she’s a singer) who’s gone through a few short styles. It’s her short pixie from a few years back that I’m currently eyeing up enviously.

If your hair is very frizzy and wavy (like mine) look into keratin treatments too as these help with some of the sleeker styles.

Definitely go for it. You never know if you’ll like it unless you try.

I did this last year. Really long to chin length blunt choppy bob. Love it. It needs cutting again now but I'm enjoying being able to do two side French pleats (just!) but I don't miss my long hair at all. Trick for me was finding a hairdresser I trusted - I only used to go once a year so didn't have a regular person. If you Do do this, please consider donating your chopped off hair to the Princess Trust (? Check on google) - they make wigs for children having cancer treatment, so you can guarantee feeling good about your cut.

Following on from NameChange84's post above, if you do decide to go ahead with it and your hair is long enough, please consider donating your hair to www.littleprincesses.org.uk/donate-hair/

(there's a few do's and don't's on there to ensure that your donation can definitely be used Smile)

I'd say have fun with going shorter by going shorter gradually with some different styles in between. Shorter hair is actually more difficult to maintain as you can't just scrape it back. It needs regular, if not daily styling.

LoveBeingAMum555 · 13/06/2020 17:35

I am 48 and went from just past my shoulders to a very short pixie 18 months ago. At first I loved it but then I realised that to look edgy and not slip into a granny cut I needed to use loads of product and I started to crave a softer more feminine look.

I don't have great hair, it's naturally thin and straggly. It was still thin and flat when it was short. At my age you have to be quite brave to carry off very short hair with minimal makeup, unless you are naturally stunning which I am not! There is no hiding with short hair.

The lockdown means that my hair is growing out anyway and I am going to try for a short bob and see how that works out.

I went from almost bra strap length to a very short, sharp bob along the lines of the attached picture. It does really suit me as I have fine hair (loads of it) and blunt cuts make it look much thicker. I don't have lovely delicate features sadly, but a strong jawline and strong cheekbones which the cut emphasises. I have had a lot of compliments and love it (or did....the fringe is midway down my nose now so needs clipping back and hair long enough to tie back. Can't wait for a cut!!

Anyone chopped all their hair off and loved it?

Thanks @ScrapThatThen. 🙂

Just be ware in the heat and humidity of summer and autumn short hair gets poofy and can make your neck sweaty if its long enough to cover the neck but not nice or long enough for a pony.

Chochito · 16/06/2020 13:11

Gone properly short today, above shoulders. It was down my back last month then got a lob. Sorry for the terrible photo.

Is it too short? Be brutally honest, please (my friends are all too nice to be honest!)

Chochito · 16/06/2020 13:12

Looks lovely!

Love it!

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 16/06/2020 13:33

Styling time? Er ..... minimal Grin

I never wash it: just rub some rose geranium scented coconut oil through it. Plenty of time to go in search of a handsome stranger to 'bubble' with Blush

It's above shoulders but my head is angled strangely, sorry.

Opinions, please. Blush

Waves hi to Swampy Flowers

I cut all mine off on a whim and have enjoyed growing it out and having different lengths. It's just past my shoulders right now and I'm itching to do something different again.

I have the Charlize Theron bob from your pic on page 1. I love it. Went from long blonde hair to this 2 years ago and will never go back. I feel funkier and my hair always looks shiny and healthy. It takes a minute to wash and I usually leave it to dry. I am always tempted by a pixie cut but I look at old photos to remind me not to.
