Yes! And I love it. You should definitely at least try the short hair because hair always grows if you don’t like it. I’ve very much had the opposite experience though, that short hair is very addictive and hard to go back from.
I had very long past the bum hair through most of my life. People used to stop me in the street and say how beautiful it was and it actually really was but in all honesty I was hiding behind my hair and thought that if I cut it there would be nothing nice about me. It was definitely a safety blanket. Over a period of a few months, I was basically guilt tripped by friends and work colleagues into a charity haircut to donate hair to make wigs for cancer sufferers and raise money after a friend (she’s now better!) got bone cancer. I’ve no doubt if it wasn’t for that that I would still have super long hair.
It was a real shock. I went from below bum length to about the length that Holly’s is in that picture except the original cut was pretty bad. It was about 12 years ago so that length of hair wasn’t as popular and I don’t think hair dressers knew how to cut wavy hair in a longer bob as well as they do now. It stuck out like a triangle and I used to pull it back into a short stubby little ponytail, aiming for it to grow long again. Despite that, I loved how much quicker it was to wash and dry and I got into swimming as exercise which was much harder with long hair, and was also part of the reason I cut it shorter in the first place.
As I say I was planning on growing it long as quick as possible but actually ended up cutting it shorter to chin length and very short at the back after a wedding where I was a bridesmaid and we’d all been given faux bobs as it was a 20s themed wedding. I loved how it looked and got a lot of compliments and the hairdresser who styled it said I’d suit that length so I booked in with him to have it cut into a short 20s style bob. He knew exactly how to cut my type of hair and I’ve been going to him ever since (except during lockdown). I’ve kept it short, most recently in a Fleabag type style as I don’t have to straighten it and it’s a really easy haircut for me with swimming most days (again before lockdown). I’d definitely recommend it as a cut for wavy hair, it’s practical and looks chic. I’ve found myself much more daring with cuts, styles and colour since I’ve cut it all off. The only style I can’t imagine going back to is really long. Short hair is much more convenient and smarter/versatile I think.
Due to ill health, I’ve not had it cut since December now and it’s got really long for me and I hate it haha! I can’t wait for a good chop but he’s booked for a months after he can reopen. I’m thinking of growing it for a bit longer, as annoying as it is, so I can donate a full 12 inches to the Little Princess Trust. This will probably mean a very short pixie cut which I’m excited about but also nervous! But as I say, hair grows and within the year I could probably have it back to chin length and my old style.
Check out Rachel welland on YouTube as she’s had a few nice cuts between bob and short pixie. I’ve used her as inspiration in the past and taken pictures to my hairdresser. Also Kinna Grannis (she’s a singer) who’s gone through a few short styles. It’s her short pixie from a few years back that I’m currently eyeing up enviously.
If your hair is very frizzy and wavy (like mine) look into keratin treatments too as these help with some of the sleeker styles.
Definitely go for it. You never know if you’ll like it unless you try.
