Anyone chopped all their hair off and loved it?

I've had long hair forever, realised that lately I constantly wear it up and don't actually like it when it's down, so think it's time to finally try short hair.

Thinking of a blunt bob or a long pixie (probably the bob as I'm too much of a chicken to go straight to a pixie). Just wondering if anyone has gone from long to short and if they loved it or hated it. Also how much of a faff is it to style short hair? Mine is quite thick and a bit wavy.

Popcorn - none of the pictures you posted are of short hair (although I suppose it’s all relative)!

Northernsoullover · 12/06/2020 18:18

I did and I did regret it. Not immediately because the hairdresser did a good job but trims afterwards never seemed to be as good as that first cut.
Absolute nightmare to grow out too. I'm stuck with pinning it up. Bobs don't work on my hair because its so straight. Any movement I try and style with hairdryer or tongs just falls out.

Mnthrowaway20202 · 12/06/2020 18:41

Growing a bob out is extremely tedious actually

NotMeNoNo · 12/06/2020 19:13

Yes and I do love my pixie, but then I like an unfussy neat style and my hair is so thick, its just bushy and unmanageable when long.

I did it gradually through shorter and shorter bobs though. No plans to grow out.

It’s nice GreenGordon, do you find it is higher or lower maintenance?

elastamum · 12/06/2020 20:36

I had a really short Bob last year when I broke my arms and couldn't reach behind my own head! Loved it so still have it now, although now desperately awaiting a haircut booked in July.

Actually, about the same, I wash it daily now, but then just leave it to dry, whereas when it was long, I only did it eod, but then had to blow dry it and either straighten it or babyliss it.
letsjustallbenice · 12/06/2020 21:36

cut mine off in lockdown just because i was fed up with bunging it up in a ponytail all the time and wanted something easy to look after, only thing id say is it makes me look fatter being slightly over weight, im growing it back abit.. decided maybe that pixie cuts only look ok if a hairdresser does it, i never can decide how to have it.. i have it long.. then i want it short.. i have it short then i want it long Confused

letsjustallbenice · 12/06/2020 21:38

its lovely to wash though thats the best thing about it no brushing and 2 minutes to wash and air drys quickly.. best part of short hair for me

feelingfragile · 12/06/2020 21:41

Yes, haven't kept it short because you need the right hairdresser and mine left and i wasn't happy with the new one but loved it.

Gotakeahike · 12/06/2020 21:53

I had very, very long hair that I always tied back and cut it off to a bob. I would grow it back out to around mid back because I couldn’t be bothered but always have it tied back, get tired of it and cut it off to a bob, get frustrated that I couldn’t tie it back, grow it out again over and over for years. Finally 4 years ago I cut it to a long pixie, which is what I’ve actually wanted for year but been to scared to do, and I absolutely love it. It really suits me. I started growing it out as I haven’t been able to get it cut recently of course, but I ended up giving myself (with dh’s help) an undercut instead so it’s very short on the sides, but still long pixie on top. I love it.

I would say try a bob first as you can always cut more. But, I did find a bob and a pixie to be very different experiences. It did take a little bit to get used to having hair on my forehead with the pixie, but definitely worth it.

Chochito · 12/06/2020 21:59

The long photo is from start of Feb. this year just after a trim. Then it grew longer in lockdown, no cut until May (4 weeks ago). It has grown again since the short cut and I want to get a trim next week. (I am abroad).

I think I like it but it was a shock and so many "why did you cut it?" comments Hmm Blush

Bob length 3 years ago, pixie just after last cut/colour. Obviously long hair is lovely on lots of women but its not an obligation. Also I tried growing out my pepper and salt natural grey last year and it was awful. I'll wait till I have clear white.

i have gone short a few times and regretted it and hated it each time!

I have very thick hair with waves, it looks awful short

LunaLoveFood · 13/06/2020 08:09

I went from bra strap length to pixie and loved it. I have fine hair and found that when it was long I either always had it in a pony tail/bun or it used to hand like curtains, it never felt 'done' or 'styled'. Whereas when is was a pixie cut just a bit of wax and it always looked styled.
It's long again now as I fancied a change but finding the same problem (my neck gets hot and sweaty in the summer too!)

Costacoffeeplease · 13/06/2020 09:12

I had very long hair a few years ago, and it was a complete pain as I live somewhere that gets very hot in summer. I now have a very short pixie and have had loads of compliments, I’m also 54 and size 14 so not a young stripling

MadisonAvenue · 13/06/2020 09:32

I had mine cut from long to short and kept it that way for around 8 years before growing it long again. I loved it and loved how quick and easy it was to style but my hair grows rapidly and is thick and I found I was having to get it trimmed and thinned out every 3 to 4 weeks.

BikeRunSki · 13/06/2020 09:36

I had my thick curly hair cut from bra stap length into an inverted Bob about a year ago. I love it!

TerribleCustomerCervix · 13/06/2020 09:41

I went from bra strap to a pixie cut in January. I only ever wore my hair up because the kids kept accidentally pulling it or playing with it with their sticky little hands. The texture seemed to have changed with pregnancy and it was CONSTANTLY knotty.

Hairdresser was very very hesitant to do it but I talked her round.

Absolutely love it. I look younger, it takes 30 seconds to dry and I love not having to straighten it or use the hairdryer for it to look tidy.

The only concern is that there’s a fine line between short hair looking young and edgy or like Nicola Sturgeon.

Starfish83 · 13/06/2020 09:54

Love this, @TerribleCustomerCervix! 😀 Would be great to see before and after pics if you have any? #feelinginspired

Coffeepot72 · 13/06/2020 10:05

Sadly I look like Nicola Sturgeon when I have short hair - so I know what you mean!

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 13/06/2020 10:19

DD (age 18) went from bum length to pixie in January, and then during lockdown, she's gone much shorter (very close shave at the back and sides, maybe 2 inches long on top). It really suits her and she looks amazing, but then she's young and slim so will look great regardless Grin.

If I did similar (at nearly 50 with white/grey hair, and "a few" stones overweight) I'd look ridiculous. I do go from bra strap length to chin length every so often, but I need hair round the jawline to balance out my face. Alternatively I could lose the extra weight and give it a go, but then I feel I'd be in danger of having an "old lady" haircut, especially with the white/grey hair.

In DDs experience, shorter hair does actually need quite a bit of looking after (long hair takes forever to dry, but short hair needs faffing with product to make it do what you want), and probably needs cutting more regularly - her long hair got a couple of inches chopped off by me every six months or so to get rid of tatty ends, but her short haircut needs the clippers every couple of weeks

Horsemad · 13/06/2020 13:18

@ScrapThatThen, I really like the first pic you posted, where did you find it please?

dontgobaconmyheart · 13/06/2020 13:34

I always toy with this OP but I never do it. Love all 3 of the celeb hairstyles you posted -on them. They're styled though and clearly at events, they also all have very similar and strong jawline and features that really offset the style and parting.

I always think about the effort I want to invest and what I'll actually look like day to day with a bob realistically, and it's not that Grin. They look nice curled but IMO (and I include myself in this) mostly look a bit shit on normal days when your hair is straight and not styled and a bit flat with minimal makeup, it's can look quite ageing and drab, especially in a middle parting.

Coffeepot72 · 13/06/2020 13:58

I never regretted trying short hair though, even though I decided it’s not for me. At least I know now.
